Question of the Day: Summer 'street fair' foods

Funnel cakes, corn on the cob and of course I can never turn down nachos and cheese with jalopeno's.

From Talk

Plain or fancy? How do you like your deviled eggs?

I don't like miracle whip on anything except deviled eggs. When I make them I use miracle whip and mustard and I add the mixture to the eggs, then I always put a piece of a green olive on tip and then sprinkle with paparika. Delicious!

From Talk

Question of the Day: Microwave! Huh! What is it good for?

Your question actually got me thinking what do I actually use my micorwave for? I remember just a couple of years ago I used it for everything, just seemed easy to pop food in for a couple of minutes and there you go, even though half the stuff I heated up tasted horrible. Now the only time I ever use it is to heat up microwave soups that I take with me to work, popcorn, and frozen veggies.

Question of the Day: Has the internet made you a better cook?

I would have to say absolutly the internet has made me a better cook. I think it is so much easier for all of us, new and old cooks out there to learn better ways to improve on cooking b/c now we all have the ability to talk to others just like us and ask questions that we know will be answered!

Much better than watching the food network and trying to learn from them!

From Talk

Question of the Day: Fresh avocado, share your love

I am with you 100% I love my avocados naked. Delicious!

I will admit sometimes I do drown my avocados in balsalmic dressng!

From Talk

What 3 foods are always in your refrigerator?

Other than the basic condiments I always have some sort of caffeine diet pop, pea pods, eggs

From Talk

Corn on the Cob

This is what I do when I boil my corn on the cob- just add enough water for the corn and once you turn the heat up add a pinch of sugar of splenda to the pot and I promise you- you will have some sweet tasting corn. When the corn is finished add a little butter and salt.

From Talk

Do you eat weekday breakfast? If so, what?

I must admit I am not a breakfast person at all but since I have a job I know I need to eat in order to function. So usually I will have a fat free raspberry or black raspberry yogurt and a bowl of fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries or some type of fresh fruit. Not fond of eggs in the morning.

From Talk

Question of the Day: What's your favorite potato dish?

I am a huge mash potato freak and one of my favorite all time dishes that contains mash potatoes is Shepard's Pie! Delicious!

From Talk

Have you ever tried absinthe?

i had some a few years ago- took a couple of shots and had sugar and then lit on fire.... i would never take it again- i immediently threw up and lets just say don't remember a lot of the night.

From Talk

What is your favorite kind of cookie?

By far the Girl Scout cookies, Thin Mints are my fav! It is really hard for me to NOT eat a whole box within two days. I ran across this recipe for Thin MInts and made the cookies a couple weeks ago and they turned out pretty darn good. Here it is if you want to try it.....

Ingredients

1/4 C. shortening
1/2 C. sugar
1 C. semi-sweet chocolate, melted
1/4 C. light corn syrup
1 egg1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. mint extract
1 and 1/2 C. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/3 C. peppermint candy, crushed

Directions

Combine shortening and 1/4 C. of the sugar and beat well. Add melted chocolate, corn syrup, egg, vanilla and mint extract and continue to beat. Slowly add flour and salt and stir until smooth. Stir in candy. Shape into 1/2-inch balls and roll in the other 1/4-C. of sugar. Cook for 12 - 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

From Talk

Interesting food combinations

Hmmmmmm..... I can't imagine fritos and mayo tasting good together but everyone has their own taste.

My two favorite food combinations that my friends think i am weird for loving are

1. mac and cheese with green peas
2. apples with american cheese.

From Talk

What's your favorite HEALTHY meal?

Anything chicken for me- here is one of my favorite chicken recipes-

Baked Lime Chicken

Ingredients

6 medium bone-in chicken breast halves (3 lb.)
1/2 C. ReaLime Lime Juice from Concentrate
2 Tbs. olive oil or cooking oil
1 Tbs. chopped fresh thyme or 1 tsp. dried thyme, crushed
1/2 tsp. onion salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

Directions

Skin chicken if desired. Rinse chicken; pat dry. Place chicken in plastic bag set in shallow dish. For marinade, combine ReaLime, oil, thyme, onion salt and pepper. Pour over chicken; seal bag. Marinate in refrigerator 4 to 24 hours, turning occasionally. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Drain chicken, reserving marinade. Arrange chicken, meaty side down, in 15x10-inch baking pan. Bake 25 minutes. Drain fat. Turn and brush with marinade. Bake 20-30 minutes longer or until tender and no longer pink.

Yield: 6 servings

Any tips for decorating cookies?

I know this isn't a fancy idea but whenever i decorate sugar cookies I do it the cheap and simple way but they end up looking really nice if you take the time to do it right-

All you need is food coloring along with some powdered sugar and water or milk. I use water-

Just mix the water and powdered sugar to whatever thickness you want icing and add whichever food coloring you want. Then play around with it. Once it dries it looks really professional.

From Talk

Better the next day

I find that Chinese food tastes fantastic the next day. Expecially the fried rice! Sometime if you heat it right, pizza can always taste better, but you have to heat it in the oven so the crust will get toasty as opposed to putting it in the microwave for soggy crust.

From Talk

Favorite Duos?

Absolutly no question about it- Ranch Dressing with my pizza!

From Talk

What goes into your ultimate sandwich (bread, spreads, filling)?

I think this is a great idea for a party! If I were hosting it or was one of the guests I would certainly bring something I made as opposed to buying some sort of store boughten spread. Here is one of my favorite recipe spreads- this one goes good with roasted turkey breast with loaded fresh veggies or a grilled veggie sandwich with grilled eggplant, zuccihini, squash and mushrooms. It is a chick pea spread-
Ingredients

1 3/4 C. cooked chickpeas or garbanzo beans (save liquid)
2 Tbs. lemon juice
1 Tbs. mayonnaise
1/4 tsp. garlic powder

Directions

Drain Chickpeas, saving liquid. Mash and blend chickpeas. Add 1 Tbs. chickpea liquid and the lemon juice, mayonnaise, and garlic powder. Mix until smooth. If too thick, add a little more chickpea liquid or water.

Yield: 6 servings

Variation: Beans in the recipe can be canned or cooked from dry beans. To cook dry beans, cover them with 2-3 times as much water as beans. Soak overnight and add water and then cook 1 1/2-2 hours.

From Talk

Question of the Day: What's the best cheese for your grilled cheese sandwich?

If I was just eating a regular grilled cheese sandwich then by far I would have to say Colby/Monterary Jack cheese- two slices!

But usually I like to add other ingredients to my grilled cheese like tomatoes or avocado's are delicious.

From Talk

kansas city bbq

I grew up in KC but haven't lived there for five years but from what i remember and recommend to everyone is Gates, Haywards and KC Masterpiece!

From Talk

What's your favorite pasta dish (homemade division)?

By far Peanut Butter Pasta! Here is the recipe!

Ingredients

12 to 16 oz. pasta (any short, fun shape) or rice noodles
1/4 C. peanut butter
2 Tbs. warm water, or to taste
2 Tbs. maple syrup, or to taste
2 Tbs. teriyaki sauce, or to taste
Pinch ground ginger
Slivered sautéed vegetables, such as broccoli florets, asparagus, thinly sliced carrots, bell peppers, scallions or red onions (optional)
Crushed peanuts and/or thinly sliced scallions (optional)

Directions

Cook the pasta according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a bowl, whisk together the peanut butter and warm water. Add the maple syrup, teriyaki and ginger and whisk to combine. Taste and adjust the amount of maple syrup and/or teriyaki sauce accordingly. If a thinner sauce is desired, add more warm water, 1 Tbs. at a time, until the desired consistency is achieved. Drain the pasta and return to the pot. Add the peanut sauce and toss to coat. If desired, add the sautéed vegetables and toss again and/or sprinkle with peanuts and, for the adults, scallions. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Makes 4 servings.

Dunkin Donuts...hehehe

Rachael Is Taking Over Everything!!! Isn't it enough that she stares us down when we walk down the cracker aisle at the grocery store?

From Talk

Do you like 'chunks' in your ice cream?

Wow that is a strange questions and it got my attention so i just have to respond. I am opposite of you- I cannot tolerate any type of fruit in my ice cream. Why? I have no idea but I love candy in my ice cream, like chocolate, nerds and bubble gum. Nuts are a no go.

From Talk

Question of the Day: What foods will you eat way after the expiration date?

Anything that is in the freezer should be good. As far as seeing mold on cheese - I, myself would toss it because seeing mold freaks me out. That is why I hate bleu cheese dressing! I do go for bread as long as "there is no mold" and it is not hard as a rock.

From Talk

Interesting food combinations

My favorite is pickles and cinnamon applesauce. It works best if you have whole dill pickles. Bite the end off, then spoon some cinnamon applesauce onto the top of the pickle and eat. I add more applesauce after each bite.

From Talk

Question of the Day: What's the best cheese for your grilled cheese sandwich?

I had a daycare for 28 years, tried everything on those kiddies but their favorite was american. Adults, like to try it with their favorite cheese. I like monterey jack the best. But tomato soup to dunk is the best.

From Talk

Question of the Day: What's the best cheese for your grilled cheese sandwich?

You haven't had a grilled cheese sandwich until you have had one with smoked gouda. I even make them at work. Toast your bread in the toaster and put butter on it. Lay gouda on the buttered side and top with other buttered side facing cheese. Put in microwave for 30 seconds and you have a delightful grilled cheese sandwich. Now at home of course I put in in a frying pan and I like mine burnt also. And it is heaven dipped in tomato soup. If you have never had gouda it is the best.

From Talk

Interesting food combinations

First, it's a good thing I don't have to use proper grammatical rules here, because I'm not going to. I love mac and cheese with tuna and peas. Rice, tuna and frozen peas works well...of course it needs a sprinkling of cheese. French fries with honey...yum! Bananas with sour cream?...that is something I might enjoy. I can see the whole M&M and goldfish cracker thing working...too bad I can't eat goldfish anymore! Before I found gluten-free crackers and bread I liked, I would put the following on plain rice cakes...not all mixed together!...nutella, brown sugar and cinnamon swirl cream cheese, any flavor jelly or jam, peanut butter, a slice of cheese... Applesauce goes with everything. Sausage with maple syrup is a combination found everywhere. Frozen sausage with maple syrup is out there, the McGriddle, etc. Oh man, I used to love the McGriddle! Banana pudding with chocolate sprinkles...I never got into the peanut butter and mayo sandwich, but mayo and cheese work great between two slices of bread. This thread is quite interesting, and I look forward to reading more.

Have you ever tried absinthe?

it was legal in europe when i lived there so we had it several times -- it's like sambuca times 20.

From Talk

Have you ever tried absinthe?

Yes, and it was a night I won't soon remember....

From Talk

Have you ever tried absinthe?

I have had several absinthes now - and strongly recommend a new one on the market - just arrived I hear - Absinthe Mata Hari. It is a Bohemian Style - less on the licorice flavor than the other ones like Lucid or St. George. You can try it like they say above - or straight with cold water - 3 parts water to 1 part Mata Hari

LOL I thought I was the only one that dipped french fries in my Frostys -- milkshakes and sundaes too. Yay!!!

When I went to McDonald's as a kid, I used to throw 4-5 french fries in my saimin* and fish them out later. They were soggy, but for whatever reason, I loved it.
* Hawaiian version of ramen except in a fish-based broth, with fishcake, green onions, and char siu on top.

@Chisai - I introduced the mayo+soy sauce as asparagus dip to my husband years ago and he LOVES it. He uses it with fish sticks, french fries, anything you can think of.

I always...always...dip my french fries in mayo-ketchup-mustard (1/2 mayo, 1/3 ketchup, 1/6 mustard), unless I'm at a Greek place, then I dip them in the tzatziki. Replace "mayo" with Kewpie mayo when I am at home.

Growing up, I used to dip my fries in honey, mainly because it was leftover from the fried chicken. I would also dab brine from pickled jalapenos on my fried chicken and eat it with whole jalapenos. I was also one of those kids who loved digging for and eating marrow. What a mess!

French onion dip lightly spread on fresh sour dough bread and sour cream and onion potato chips in the middle.

From Talk

my sisters and I loved to get a piping hot egg roll. cut it in half and fill each "cup" with Texas Pete hot sauce and eat it over the sink. Hot, greasy, crunchy, making my mouth water in memory.

I like to eat fried chicken with hot sauce, but one day I was out of hot sauce, so I ate it with some kimchi. Now it's something I crave...a lot.

Husband likes Saltines with a thin layer of peanut butter, topped with a thin layer of mayo, topped with a thin layer of grated horseradish. gross.

X-bf used to melt a slice of american cheese in the broth of his Sapporo Ichiban beef flavored ramen. He made it for me when we were both a little hungover in college and I thought I was going to barf.

From Talk

Interesting food combinations

@amyscoop - my dad introduced me to bananas and sour cream when I was a kid. I think it was actually pretty big in ethnically eastern European households. Oh, it's even better with a drizzle of maple syrup.

And I too love mac and cheese with peas or broccolli, which I also grew up with.

The thing my friends here think I'm really weird for is a hometown favorite - mayo mixed with shoyu and used as a tip for broccoli, though I've expanded to include grape tomatoes. It's SO good, but I think something one kinda has to grow up with.

From Talk

Interesting food combinations

Leftover rice -- particularly if it was cooked with chicken stock, saffron, or both -- reheated and topped with a dollop of cottage cheese.

Or, that same leftover rice, reheated, with some frozen peas mixed in.

Or, a tomato and mayo sandwich on white bread.

From Talk

Interesting food combinations

I've never eaten ketchup, so as a child, I dipped my French fries in syrup. This was the days before burger joints served breakfast, so the response to a kid asking "Can I have some syrup?" was never positive.

Also, I didn't like PB&J, so I would mix PB & syrup, then spread it on crackers...cause I didn't like sliced bread. (I know...I was a weird kid.)

From Talk

Interesting food combinations

Banana and mayo on Wonder bread. My family were Democrats, but also liked peanut butter on celery. Cream cheese is good on celery, too. Wait! Now that I think about it, my grandmother was Republican, and she's the one who fed me, so, srhcb, you may be right. She used to put milk, sugar and a little coffee on biscuits, when I would beg for the forbidden coffee. She called it 'coffee soup', and I loved it. Sweet gherkins and any kind of cheese, especially sharp cheddar. Peanut butter and bacon on Wonder, sometimes with apple butter. Bacon and apple butter are yummy together. So is bacon, eggs and corn. Cucumbers on hot buttered biscuits. Pretzels and milk, especially Rold Gold mini's. Potato chips or FF dipped in chocolate ice cream. Sweet pickle relish and hot peppers on a sub. I could go on and on, but it can get boring. I always thought these things were normal, till I learned most people found them revolting. Especially bananas and mayo, but some fruit dressings are mayo based, so it still seems normal to me. Gotta try the bananas and sour cream, which sounds better.

@ sheldel: "...peanut butter & celery leaves..."

Growing up, I always thought peanut butter on celery (w/leaves) was universal. Later on I discovered it was only common in Republican households.

From Talk

Interesting food combinations

My favourite has got to be Walkers ready salted( plain) crisps(chips, to you Americans/Aussies/whatever) and chocolate, preferably Kit-Kat or Yorkie bars...and yes...together!

Another is boil up some basmati rice. Once it's cooked stir in some curry powder, and cold beans! Great for when you're really hungry but dont want to do much cooking. It's also reeeeeaally filling, so beware!( Does anyone else do this?)

Something my friend from school once suggested to me is cold turkey dipped in melted dark chocolate...havn't gotten around to trying it yet though.
