Been doing the Toronto cocktail a lot lately. We brought back some real 100% Canadian rye from our holiday trip and have a bottle of Fernet Branca in our cupboard. Need a new orange, though. I'm getting better at flaming it!

We Try All the Spindrift Soda Flavors

I don't understand why serving sizes aren't the size in the bottle. Glass bottles are pretty darn standard.

For Coke and stuff, sure, they come in all sorts of sizes, but why can't they be realistic? Who's going to drink only part of a carbonated drink and save it for later? It never works out.

Grace/prayer at a dinner party

Yeah, it's not worth all that worry. If you want to say grace, but are worried about offending the non-religious, just make it neutral and short. Nothing wrong with being thankful for being with people you love and lots of food together. It's worth remembering how lucky you are.

Raw garlic - who's in?

Yep, raw garlic is fine to nibble on. A whole clove is asking for trouble, though. You have to portion it out. I like to taste it while cooking.

Exceptional Shojin-ryori at Kajitsu in the East Village

If you don't mind a little trip to Toronto, Canada, there is a kaiseki chef who's got serious credentials - in the top 11 chefs in the 2007 Japan Culinary Arts competition. Never been, since there was a minimum party number and we didn't know anyone who would be willing to pony up that much for one meal.

All this fancy food looks gorgeous. Unfortunately, we spent a lot of money on furniture this month, so no fine dining coming up in the near future. It all looks and sounds wonderful!

Soda: Do You Ever Mix Fanta and Coke?

As a kid, I had ginger ale at a restaurant and the other server was surprised when I wanted a refill because they didn't have it. Turns out I was getting Sprite with a shot of Coke.

I love mixing! I deliberately underfill my cup so I can go back for more! I also sometimes do a 80% Coke Zero to regular Coke mix to avoid too much syrupiness when I'm at a machine. Otherwise, regular stuff it is!

This "duck sauce" name is some weird American thing. No one in Canada calls it that. It's plum sauce, plain and simple, whether or not it's mostly plums in there (pumpkin is one kind of filler). Don't get me started on "potstickers".

Modernist Christmas: Shishito Peppers with Pomegranate Caviar

Shishitos are awesome, but also try padrón peppers, which are their Spanish cousins. Discovered them this summer and they are done up pretty much the exact same way! Similar heat profile, too. A bunch of mild ones and the occasional danger pod!
