Japanese Fusion Burgers from the Marked5 Truck in Los Angeles
Ummm...just plain awful. Actually, I fail to see why this qualifies as a burger at all, even on a good day.. (meat patty??) As usual, I enjoyed the review.

I never expected to have this much fun reading about burgers.. And what a burger!! Thanks, D, for a great post and mouth watering recommendation.
Birthday Burger at Tavern in Brentwood, Los Angeles
Damon's style in his postings are such an added pleasure to me--one I look forward to each week. (He sent me to Webster this time..) I often find them, as today, inspiring, as well as a great look-see at the local burger scene. Tavern is stunning! and a good burger, too..YEA.
HAPPY, HAPPY B-day to you, Damon.

If that is medium rare, I guess rare moos.
A Burger (P)review of Dish in Malibu, California
Where else but Malibu? This sunny spot and creative chef seem a great find to me-- and fun. Alas, I doubt the $6.50 burger will follow Triplett to Bev Hills, but in the meantime, I plan to have "known him when..." (While too much messing with the meat does give me pause, the setting, $$ and your positive take make it worth a try.)
A New York-ish Burger at The Bowery in Hollywood
disappointed to hear the burgers are going for $20+++. I honestly did believe "only in New York!" and, agreed, they should be stellar.. there is way too much meat on that burger anyway in my view.
A Disappointing Classic at Rick's Drive In and Out in Silver Lake, California
Rick's sounds like a pleaser for well-done-burger-lovers..I actually not only know a few but in fact are related to them....hard to imagine...

yum....and i wonder why more good burgers aren't flattened to cover the entire bun? sounds like simple, done expertly(and sweetly!), wins again.

Damon-- The disappointing burger did not diminish the pleasure of the posting! You do make me laugh, and all so clever.
A Professional Burger at Nick & Stef's Steakhouse
Another burger for my list, and the fries with parsley sound really yummy-- maybe even a good reason to trek downtown. Shrimp is looking good, too! Professional at its best!

i enjoy my burger halved--but by me, not them! nice pic, nice read.

I would ordinarily skip cheese all together, particularly the unmelted variety--but not this time!!! The burger apparently tastes as good as it looks and more. Thanks for the review, Damon.

That burger looks and sounds quite wonderful--Enjoyed your review as usual.
Culver City: Burger Hunting at Gyenari
That burger obviously looks better than it tastes. I too like the slimmer and broader patty and have recently developed a liking for grilled onions though am still surprised they seem to be the kitchen's assumed choice, rather than the raw ones.
The Working Lunch at Lemon Moon in Los Angeles
Another good review, Damon--and somewhat of a relief for me to refrain from adding yet another to my "must-go-to-burger-places" when I am in LA!!!! The soggy bottom bun pretty much closed the deal on this one...
Checking One Off the List at The Bucket in Eagle Rock, California
What is it about the oversalting, overseasoning and overcooking of so many burgers these days?? I have often thought it might be due to inferior meat, but that is apparently not always the case--and not at The Bucket.

Damon,
Next time your are in Redondo Beach, try the Bull Pen Bar / Lounge, great burgers and has a blast from the past. I think it's been there for at least 30yrs.

Great review, Damon, and spot on commentary on Redondo. I'm from the area originally, growing up there. Your observations make me miss my home terribly - my best friend, who lives in Seattle now, and I used to go to that very El Torito you mentioned for their crappy Sunday brunch, just to enjoy the view. I guess I'll have to grab a burger there the next time I'm home.
Japanese Fusion Burgers from the Marked5 Truck in Los Angeles
OMG! You're insane, Damon! I love it! Thank you for chasing down this burger truck so I don't have to. Time is money and I have little of either so thanks to you I don't have to spend my money or waste my time trolling Twitter for this one.
I LOVED the pic of you in the food truck. Nice touch. While it looks like the burger sucked, this just might be my favorite of your posts yet.
A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California
Save your money, folks. The burger at 25 Degrees is a sad affair. Today, the service was both inattentive and poorly timed. But on to the food. Great rings and tasty fries. The burger meat itself is great--one is keenly aware that it is sirloin, and that is a good thing. Sadly, both burgers were overcooked, and the bun is a disaster. The top of bun was tough and dry enough to make a "thock" sound when tapped with a fingernail. It basically overwhelmed the burger with dry joylessness. The bottom of the bun, also a shamefully overbaked puck of parched, crumbling sadness. The cheese was not melted over the burger, but simply served as an unmelted pile of gunk in the center of the burger, which had so be scraped from the bun and then spread.
The high point is that the waitress must have stuffed two angels down the back of her pants to present such a compelling view. So, the highlights---Good sides, good sights, good sirloin.
Overview: 25 Degrees is a weak suck and can be avoided.

"The nouveau Los Angeles food trucks have become light bulbs to the moths that make up our local foodie scene."
Wow, what a nice thing to say. When did this site become Pitchfork?
Japanese Fusion Burgers from the Marked5 Truck in Los Angeles
"Kogi taco . . .a mediocre exercise in fusion cuisine"
That's putting it mildly.

Japanese Fusion Burgers from the Marked5 Truck in Los Angeles
Keep on reviewing these fusion burgers -- the truth needs to be told.
Japanese Fusion Burgers from the Marked5 Truck in Los Angeles
I actually ran into this place for the first time tonight. I think if you remove the crazy demand these trucks have established, they start to work out pretty well: there are 4 or 5 trucks with various fusion tacos and things floating around USC, and when you can get a korean bbq burrito in 5 or 10 minutes it can make your day a lot better.
I'm with you on the rice utterly falling apart, grey patty, etc. However, mine came wrapped with some nori, and that made it much better. My mouth interpreted it as a sort of overblown, beef sushi which actually worked out. If you expect a burger, though, you're in for an unpleasant surprise.
They gotta perfect the rice bun and not cook the patty to a crisp, but conceptually I think it has some promise.
Japanese Fusion Burgers from the Marked5 Truck in Los Angeles
Food truck food can be fun, though. It's the attempts at street 'haute cuisine' that fail. In LA..head down to the garment district or the Jewelry Mart areas and try a breakfast burrito from one of the many trucks...especially Alfredo's! Huge, fresh made, incredibly delicious and totally satisfying...and all for $5.50! I've tried some of the haute cuisine trucks...no thanks. Over priced, small portions and usually tasteless.

The burger looks dreadful, but of course the review was quite the opposite. Thanks for another great read, Damon, and for saving us burger-lovers any culinary cognitive dissonance, collective or otherwise!

Congrats on the 1 year anniversary and thanks for being my L.A. Burger Guide. I can honestly say that you've revolutionized the way I look at burgers. You also revolutionized the size of the spare tire surrounding my waist as I've become a burger addict. Your reviews are well worth the added pounds to my frame. Here's to another year of reviews!
Birthday Burger at Tavern in Brentwood, Los Angeles
Sadly, this burger is nowhere near being worthy of the attention or the price tag. This evening's rendition was absolutely insipid. The beef added nothing but bulk to the dish--no satisfying crust, no rich, no seasonings in or on, no aged beef funkiness, and the grind was fine enough to make it resemble baby food in both taste and texture. The bun would really work with a flavorful version of this burger. The dough was worked just a touch longer than a proper scone, which meant that the gluten strands were sufficiently short as to not create a chewy product. This yielded a perfect, but bland mouth feel. One should definitely pass on the rings. The rings were greasy to the touch and greasier in the mouth--"crunchy, oil sponges" comes to mind.
It is no wonder that not a single staff member asked our table how our food was (during and after the meal)--the answer would have been "disappointing." So it goes...I'm sure that other menu items at Tavern, are wonderful (the heirloom tomatoes were very nice), but I would not recommend this burger to any of my friends.

This was so much fun to read! I'm glad you had so much fun eating the burger. I'm a cook there and was wondering if you can email the group shot you took.
About the bacon, we recieve the bacon whole, and break it down into squares before we cook it - it would be too hard to cut, it would also mean we would have to cut everything at once, which would take too long and is too hard to store correctly. As far as the taste: its everything you ever wanted from bacon, but didn't know you were allowed to ask for more.

just lovely. look forward to trying it one day...

This is the best write-up I've seen on here in weeks. Great work - and what looks like a great burger. Twice-fried fries look awesome too.

@maxcriden - Thanks for the compliment. Even though I like the original better than the Smothered the photo of the latter gets me every time.
@williamwest - Thanks so much for the kind words.
@juliebugsmama - Ha! I think the Smothered burger is on the edge of NSFW.
@FamishedFem - Definitely a must try. Rustic Canyon is a restaurant I've really come like for many reasons. One caveat: it can get noisy when busy.
@redfish - No need to wait for heaven!
@AmazonGoddess - Thanks! Though I don't think my mother will approve at my budding "porn" career.
@alosha7777 - Thank you for the compliment!
@hookrilla - Hmm, SF? I'll be doing some burger recon there soon so I will hold off on opining. In the meantime, here is Jen Meiser's recommendation:
http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2008/09/spruce-the-best-burger-in-san-francisco-california.html
@wunami - Almost too good.
@Burger365 - I will find out for you and report back with respect to the exact preparation. As for how it ends up - the final frying crisps the bacon.
@SinoSoul - I guess my short answer is I don't think of toppings categorically, but rather assess them on a case to case basis as to how they enhance or detract from the overall enjoyment of the burger. To your specific question - Tavern vs. Rustic - it's not really apples to apples. First off I loved the quality of Tavern's toppings... I wrote in the review:
"The toppings alongside look as pristine and delectable as a high-end house salad. I sample them on their own. The pickles are perhaps the tastiest iteration I’ve come across."
What didn't work for me was how they interacted with the rest of the burger. Again, in the review I wrote:
"The burger's juiciness and fat seem out of step with the added texture (and water) of the toppings."
As for Rustic Canyon, the mass of toppings married with the burger beautifully. Above I wrote:
"The first bite is first kiss headiness: The flavor of the beef, salty and juicy, is awash in a complex of fat and sweetness that is nearly pitch perfect. Even the arugula —a lettuce choice that usually steams into mushy submission—vanquishes me. Its peppery bite, along with the pickle, cuts the sweet of the onions. The rémoulade blends into the flavor experience adding yet another layer fat and desire. The meat manages to hold its own against all these flavors; salty and wonderfully griddled, it has an intense crust that crumbles into each mouthful."
Phew... I guess that's the long answer. While I think the question you posed is answered in the reviews, the underlying question is a great one. What makes for great toppings on a burger? For me, there isn't a singular answer. I try to assess each burger on its merits while not forgetting to acknowledge my prejudices so as to give the best information.
I hope that clears up your confusion!
@carlita - Rustic is about 15 minutes from LAX... just try not to get distracted by the In-N-Out on your way.
@SAKc - Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed the review!
@iheartcheese - Evan is so interesting. One little tidbit I didn't mention is that his father is an Academy Award winning cinematographer.
@dzhughes - Glad you liked the read, but in the end the real thing is where it's at. This one is definitely worth a try.
@Lvn4life - Nothing cynical about classic potato buns!
One of L.A.'s Best Burgers at Rustic Canyon in Santa Monica
I was with you until you placed the egg ontop,.......The top bun is a little to fluffy for me - color me cynical for enjoying the classic potato (or even "egg") buns.
An Upscale Casual Burger Fails to Strike a Balance at Westside Tavern in Los Angeles
I'm a big fan of the "modern" F.O. burger as well as the traditional "Pie & Burger" -- and to me the Westside Tavern cheeseburger strikes a perfect balance between the two. It's one of my favorite burgers in LA. That said, they do tend to do medium rare just like you have it pictured -- but in general I have found them very up front about that, and they usually advise getting it medium for anyone who wants it a more "customary" medium rare.
One of L.A.'s Best Burgers at Rustic Canyon in Santa Monica
Wow... is all I can say. Oh and "Um... Yum..." too. Rustic Canyon is officially on my list thanks to your description which was so gastronomic I felt as though I was eating the burger right along with you. For a second I thought you went to the golf course in Moorpark to review their burger!
Don't know what the comment from SinoSoul is all about. Uh, have you had the burger at Tavern? If not, then just look at the pics of the burger from that review and compare them to the pics of this review. Now do you see? Tavern takes "run it through the garden" to a whole new level.
One of L.A.'s Best Burgers at Rustic Canyon in Santa Monica
Yummmmmmmmmmmm. West side, here I come. I'm also into the diversity of Evan's background!
Another great review Damon. (Watch out though, it looks like some one up there might be avidly vying for your job. Ha.)
Birthday Burger at Tavern in Brentwood, Los Angeles
@SinoSoul - Alas, the burger deal at Rustic of which you speak is no more. Labor Day marked its end. The RC burger is back to its $16 dollar ways. Is it worth $16? I've had a chance to sample it a few times and talk burger technique with Chef Evan Funke so I'll have an answer to that question and more in next week's review.
Birthday Burger at Tavern in Brentwood, Los Angeles
$17 dollars, same price as the DBGB burger. A few miles away Rustic Canyon has $12 burger and beer nights. I can't imagine Tavern's beer (tho I love the food + ambience), being $5 + a pint of beer better than RC's.
