Anchovies: Way or No Way?

The more the merrier! When ordering caesar salads with friends I usually tell the waiter to deposit everyone else's on my salad. Most people hate them but since I'm addicted to salt I love them!!!!

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

Many years ago when they first came out they were made of Haddock and they were very good. God only knows what's in them now. Forget the cheese. Many years ago the filet-o-fish sammy came with cole slaw and tartar sauce which was really very good. I haven't had one in decades...

Cookieeater- Cheap and greasy..sounds like a girl I dated in high school. I would certainly order these but I'd have to order like 3 Happy Meals unless it came in an adult version. I haven't had a filet-o-fish for decades and I remember they used to be made with Haddock. God knows what they're made with now.

Stuffing Vs. Dressing

I always stuff the bird (and no one has ever died!) and whatever is left over gets baked and later combined with what came out of the turkey. My old world Grandma always called it stuffing and my modern American Nana always referred to it as dressing. When I was about 5 years old or so I remember hearing Nana call it dressing and I believed she was going to put little turkey clothes on our dinner!!

Salt Mill/Pepper Grinder... difference?

I had one of those combination pepper/salt grinders whereby you twisted a cylinder to get either salt or pepper. As far as I can remember it used the same grinding mechanism. So based on that I wouldn't think there'd be much difference.

Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults

FIZZIES! Does anyone remember those? They were an Alka-Seltzer-like product that flavored water just by dropping a tablet into a glass. It would dissolve and when it was done you had a wonderful sweet fruit-flavored soft drink. It was pulled off the shelves in the early 70s because of cyclamates, an artificial sweetner that allegedly caused cancer in lab rats. Anyway, about 10 years ago it was re-marketed and I bought some for old time sake. BLECH!!! It was disgustingly sweet and really vile. So we had a "Happy Fizzies Party"; we dropped all that were left into the john.

We Talk to Bobby Flay About Bobby's Burger Palace

Well first of all I was excited to eat at Bobby Flays place so I had high expectations but that shouldn't a affect my review. I ate at the Lake Grove restaurant. I ordered a blue burger medium rare, a dark chocolate shake and onion rings. The burger was actually raw! and the bottom half of the roll was not usable because it was saturated and I was unable to pick it up. I sent the burger back and this time I got one that was well done. They can't seem to get the cooking process right. Even that bottom half of the roll was wet. The shake was nothing more than ice cream stirred up to be soft, it was too thick to drink, and surprisingly for that price ($5.00) it was pretty small. The onion ring order was also small for the price and not so great, not crunchy or that tasty, rather bland. I have to say for the value, the whole meal was definitely not worth the price and the atmosphere was very cold and uninviting. I will definitely not be visiting this place again and I will not recommend this place to anyone either. I can honestly say that burger king is better than this place. Sorry Bobby, I think you better visit this location and straighten out your good name.

Is there a real difference between Soul Food & Southern Food

My understanding of soul food is that it is a subset of Southern cooking that grew out of the dishes developed by the slaves to make do with the "unwanted" foods and cuts of meat that were left for them (my mother is of Norwegian and African-American descent, and this is what she always told me). Thus, soul food includes things like black-eyed peas, ham hocks and collard or dandelion greens, chittlins/chitterlings, and yams or sweet potatoes (especially when they're used as sweeteners, as in pie). Given that the provenance of slavery was the American South, these dishes have since become incorporated into the canon of Southern food and eaten by all kinds of people (including my very mixed family). And that is, I think, a beautiful thing.

From Talk

Is there a real difference between Soul Food & Southern Food

Soul = Southern pretty much. Most white people in the pre-Civil War South did NOT have slaves cooking for them. After the war, most folks in the South were poor. Most regional food seems (to me, anyway) the food the poorest folks - black OR white - prepared from what was readily available.

From Serious Eats

Water Works: How To Make Seltzer at Home

actually unless it makes you feel really really good, putting the bottles in the recycling bin is the worse of the two options because recycling them wastes a bunch of money, energy, and time.

Paula Deen Is Trying to Kill Us, Part 4: Bacon, Doughnut, Egg Burger

New York Times had Donut Pudding printed a few weeks ago. Made it twice and pased it around to friends. Made more raspberry jelly for the second batch and doubled the # of donuts for a really large pan. If you decide to make some kind of donut thing, don't use Dunkin Donuts. They don't have enough jelly in them unless you are driving and eating a donut with the other hand. You can order big ones from the Stop & Shop. Frozen dough, sure but they hold a lot of jelly and when you add cream, eggs and sugar. Yum.

Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?

I used to watch a lot of FN back in the early days. I enjoyed Jack McDavid, Mario Batali, Sara Moulton. Now, I never watch FN. The turning point, for me, was when Rachel Ray became a "star" (gag).
Now if I want to learn something about cooking, I tune in PBS, and watch Jacques Pepin, Lidia, or the two ladies on America's Test Kitchen.

I have to agree with many comments here.I have studied culinary arts for years and these housewife cook wannabees do not know the difference between a good Veloute and a bowl of gravy.
Where does the food netwok find these people?
Sandra Lee gets so excited over her booze, you would think she was an alcoholic! Rachael Ray acts like the host of Sesame Street with her ignorant, goofy, childish sayings. Paula Dean serves so much fat in her food, it is more rich than her fake, overpronounced accent which is comparable to fingernails on a chalkboard.Giada dresses like a street walker and tries to sound italian with her fancy pronouncing og food. What happened to credible culinarians? are all we are left with are women's day readers like these four women who think they are teaching cooking? please!!!
