Fort Worth, Texas: A Serious Eating Tour

I visit Fort Worth a lot as I have a good friend there. During one 3-day visit, I had chicken-fried steak, biscuits and gravy, BBQ, Mexican food, even Chinese food, and much more. I love the food there!

I'd been hearing for a while that it was myth. Not far off from the myths based on the U.S. government's food pyramid, created not to guide us nutritionally, but to help sell beef.

That's easy. I have considered actually trying to open a Potato Latke place with all kinds of toppings!

Perfect. I will be at the South by Southwest festival for the first time. I am going to use that list of restaurants, for sure. I love BBQ!

Ice Cream, Unsweetened

I would love to find some unsweetened ice cream up here in Boston. What a great idea. I have tried the taro and green bean popsicles from the Asian markets here, but I find they are pretty darned sweet. Although I love the savory green bean flavor peeking through.

I've had these. The idea is sort of gross but they're not half-bad. I think I've seen them up here in Boston.

If We Eat Less Meat, Can We Save the Planet and Ourselves?

I am on a personal journey of learning to eat smaller portions. Because I eat out a lot, I am often served portions that I used to enjoy but now find way too large. I find it makes sense for me to eat at home or at buffets, where I can control the portions. I loved "The Omnivore's Dilemma." Should be required reading for anyone who eats.

Upcoming Japanese Trend: Hot Beer

I have enough trouble adding ice cubes to beer (which I do from time to time when the beer's not frosty enough), so hot beer sounds kinda unappetizing.

The Best Super Bowl Mail-Order Feasts: What's Your Favorite?

I live in Boston, where, for some odd reason, we have a dearth of good delis. Everyone I know would give just about anything for a good deli. I hadn't thought of mail ordering a heaping Reuben.... Maybe I could even trade a live, kickin' lobster for a good sandwich.

ooooooh, Babe's! I'm from Chicago - it's pretty hard to beat the variety and quality of food we have here. But we just don't know a damn thing about good Southern BBQ. Fortunately I have family in the DFW area that we visit at least once a year. Babe's Fried Chicken and Carol Southern's homemade pies are a must on each visit. I won't eat fried chicken all year long here if it means I'm going to be having it at Babe's - not worth my time. The biscuits - hot, buttered biscuits w/ honey! Good thing we'll be back in two weeks; I'm starving!

Does the Southside Market have a mail order website? Would love to try some of their products.

Thanks,

Caros...the restaurant I miss the most from Fort Worth. The tostadas make the most excellent nachos. A plate of bean & cheese nachos with a couple of their margaritas...doesn't get much better!

And they're not new...they've been there for years & years...just down from TCU on Bluebonnet Circle.

How funny - I read that dessert menu and wondered why Brajas was serving everything from Reata...

I've wondered, though, why no Joe T's in the "Tex Mex Cookbook" or Fort Worth tour?

Video: Chicken Commercial Possibly Rejected from Wendy's

This loosks really familiar... didn't they show this commercial a few (2-3?) years ago?
If it wasn't this exact one, then it was very similar. maybe the guy didn't blow up in the end, but I think he might have.

That is the actor from Gilmore Girls and I've seen him recently in another commercial - forget the product. I doubt he'd be in a joke video. I'm betting it's the real thing and it's funny!

@RheaB: Supposedly, it would have been near completion but got axed, so it *is* a real commercial, at least in terms of production values, etc. It just never ran (supposedly).

@onalark: I have no idea what Wendy's is selling at the moment. Haven't been to one in months.

@Carosone: Could be an attempt at a viral video, as I said — if Wendy's is indeed selling the product.

@LoCo: My point exactly!

Ed-

We ate those desserts at Reata on Sundance Square, not Brajas, whatever that is.

Babe's...Mmmmmmmmmm! I live just down the road, so I get to experience the greatness of their biscuits and chicken whenever I want. Though, I try to keep it at every couple months otherwise I would be more than a little rotund. :D

You didn't say how you ate the biscuits. Please tell.

I prefer mine with just the ultra-creamy Plugra butter they have, but sometimes I spread a little sorghum on if I feel like being "exotic".

I live within walking distance of Kincaids - don't bother. I prefer Angelo's to Railhead.

Maybe you should have Mr. Walsh take you around Houston sometime... We have the best burger in Texas! (Lankford Grill) Plus you'll get a chance to eat Ms. Thelmas BBQ and her ethereal Fried Catfish...

I've never heard of Mom's. I did make it to Angelo's yesterday, where I had some of the best brisket of my life. Ask for it moist. Otherwise they just just give you the superlean bottom of the brisket.

If you want the best BBQ in Fort Worth, you have to eat at Mom's BBQ. There is a reason it keeps winning each year in the Fort Worth Weekly's "Best of" issue. The ribs are about the best I have ever had.

Ed, After all your hard work, you deserve a pig-out break. Just get back on track when you return home.

Just so you know, Angelo's has the authentic atmosphere, but the food just isn't there. I prefer Cousin's. It's newer and has that prefab look, but the food is 100% real, and the brisket is a thing of beauty. Also, Angelo's doesn't have Shiner Bock on tap, and part of the barbeque joint experience is a huge frosty goblet of Shiner. Not that you're into that sort of thing, being a non-drinker.

Also, Kincaid's is pretty darn good, but not the best burger in the country. It is very much like the Burger Joint in NYC, I'd say.

Never tried Caro's- it must be new. I'll try it next time I'm back home, it looks pretty great.

I'd say go to Joe T Garcia's next time you're in town, but the food only tastes good after one of their famous margaritas, so perhaps not. But if it's authentic Fort Worth atmosphere you want, eating in the garden by the pool is pretty awesome on a spring evening.

Throw the scale away! Everything looked so good, I think fried chicken needs to be on my menu SOON! Have a great time and be safe;)
