A Zingerman's Education: Exclusive Student Care Packages

My son is a senior in college. He loves food, has sophisticated taste, and is a wine enthusiast, but he has reverted to sophomoric behavior before he has to go into the REAL WORLD!! How do I mix all of that?? I'll be working on it and get back to you!!

Thanks for sharing this. I always wonder what the waiters/waitresses are thinking. As a regular diner at all types of restaurants, let me please get this out: I am only responsible for myself. I hate dining with picky demanding diners, but sometimes I am forced, I am related to them!!!!!

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?

This is like when my kids put ketchup on everything they hated to eat-broccoli! Good pizza is good, period. If it needs "dressing" then it is not good to begin with. Leave this practice to the middle schoolers!!!

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?

I absolutely love ranch on my pizza. Granted, I am a middle-school student (though homeschooled), and got the idea from my (middle school, homeschooled) friends after we started dipping French-Fries in Ranch (that's justified in Mich--here most of the fries are way too greasy or way too dry). We decided to try it on our pizza--and it's great. Only Hidden Valley (tm) works though. Deep dish pizza doesn't need it, fortunately. A group fave for us is cayenne pepper, fresh black pepper, ranch, and tabasco sauce. I agree, if it's good pizza, it doesn't need condiments, but (1) pizza in metro-detroit isn't that good, and (2), it doesn't matter if it needs it--if ya want it, I say put it on unashamedly!

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?

I have NEVER heard of this culinary habit of ranch dressing on pizza until I read this in the Wash. Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/27/AR2008052700821.html

It just seems like such an incongruous flavor or condiment to add to a pizza.

Nothing is better than Ham & Pineapple pizza dipped in Ranch.

I hated pizza until I tried it with ranch. Any type of pizza goes great with ranch really except Mexican style, I usually dip that in sour cream.

^^Which means you're kind of a tool. Do you realize that the base wage for many servers is around $2.33 per hour?? What we take home in tips is what we earn. It's not like we're making 8 bucks an hour and your $10 is just an added bonus.

The Latest in College Financial Aid: Food Stamps

I have a friend in undergraduate school who is an independent student - no parental help whatsoever. I took her to the local DHHR office, and they said that she wasn't eligible for any help (not food stamps, not a medical card, nada) because she was a college student.

The Latest in College Financial Aid: Food Stamps

I was on food stamps when I went to school in 2000. When you're paying with student loans and can only have time to work a less-than-full-time job, it helps a lot! Plus, if you look at the statistics for many counties in the US, food stamp programs are almost always under-utilized.

From Serious Eats

The Latest in College Financial Aid: Food Stamps

Funny, I got food stamps in college (a million years ago in the early '90s) and I never really thought much about it. $112/month went pretty far 15 years ago in the NW. I bought all sorts of expensive-ish items that normally would've been beyond the budget of a 19-year-old with a part-time job.

The Latest in College Financial Aid: Food Stamps

I know kids who have done this. It's tough to get through college nowadays.

As a college student, I'm fortunate enough to have everything--tuition, apartment, food, etc--paid for (out of parent's pocket, sans student loans). I never worried about money the first two years of school, but even now, I've become a lot more frugal in my spending and careful with my credit cards (switching from Wegman's to Giant or Weis, organic to conventional, driving one or two times a week, and drinking cheaper alcohol). I have learned to budget, and pay attention to price tags. I think this is a very real wake up call--one I especially needed.

The money crunch truly does affect us all--even us, the student who believed we were impervious to the real world while in our bubbles of college.

I intentionally do not tip on tax. This seems like common sense to me, like not tipping on the tip.

It's rare that a waiter or waiter earns the 20% of the menu price that I give them. Some actually deserve more, and I have given it to them. Some waitstaff have reason to be grateful I don't stiff them altogether. Still, the tip is regarded as an entitlement, and having earned it is almost beside the point. Not leaving a 20% tip edges into "not standing for the National Anthem" territory - only a scoundrel even contemplates doing it, and peer pressure is the tool of enforcement.

Hey there EatersRegret, I live in the UK and if I can get Ranch dressing here in Wales, I'm jolly sure you can get in in London! My local Tesco has one by Paul Newman. Never had it before so can't compare it with any other makes...bet you can get to a nice deli that would sell it, too!

What should we get?" people inquire all the time.

"Help me out a little," I am forced to retort. Is this dinner, or a snack? What do you like? What do you want? We just met. I am no psychic.

Gosh, I can see how this can be annoying for you, but hang on a minute, if a waiter/waitress said that to me ie, copped an attitude, I would walk out.

The other day, I was in my local tapas bar and wondered if I should have a beer or wine, and the very helpful waiter suggested beer and also which beer to have that would go so well with what I had ordered. No attitude, just friendliness and a willingness to help me out. I left him a nice tip and recommended this place to all my friends. I would go there time and time again.

When are you restaurant staff-people going to stop saying "JUST one?" when someone who is dining sans companion(s) enters your establishments?

Why not just say "Merely only just one inadequately dining all by yourself, utterly alone?" and get it over with?

Do you ever ask "JUST two? of a couple? Why not? I mean, they're so much less SUBSTANTIAL than a group of ten.

I just looked up ranch dressing and DID throw up in my mouth! Never heard of anyone dipping pizza crusts in any kind of dip, never mind what sounds like is probably some mass-produced, salt and fat-fest. You crazy Americans and your food mutilations. I need to cheer myself up by looking at a bird getting eaten by a spider.

I grew up in OK, but I have lived all over: KS, MO, NC, UT, CA and I have noticed that people eat different things based on where they are from and how they grew up. I don't think its fair to persecute one another for something we've never tried...all great combos had to start somewhere...ie: biscuits and gravy, sweet tea, chicken and waffles, etc. I personally LOVE Ranch or Garlic Dipping sauce on the crust pieces of my pizza, but only on the crust. One thing that I love to do with leftover pizza is top it with cottage cheese and a little black pepper! Call me crazy, but I also believe, its my pizza I can do what I want with it.

OMG, I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.
Never mind ranch alone, but the thought of ham, pineapple, and ranch ? My goodness, what a sacrilege to the almighty pizza.(NY style of course)
Well does any other really even exist?

I'm a Northern transplant here in the south (NC)
This is where I first discovered people using ranch as a condiment rather then the ones I had been brought up around such as Grated cheese or crushed red pepper .
C'mon, everyone knows if the pizza is good you don't need anything else besides napkins!
Come to think of it, some of the pizza I've tried to choke down here in the south might have actually tasted better with a jar of ranch for dipping!
Now it's starting to make sense.
I finally found a great pizza joint here without having to disgrace the almighty pizza pie!
And I can't stop laughing about Keith W 3:33 10/21/08 comment !

I used to hate pizza but then I tried it with ranch on accident. I'm the type of person that will eat something if it toches something else. So I try it and love it.

We have frozen pizza at home or we order pizza so it's easy. Then the only restaurant I get pizza at is Pizza Hut and they have a salad bar so ranch is there.

I dip all kinds. Ham & Pineapple in ranch is the best. BTW I only dip, I don't pour it on top.

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?

I am a 4th grade teach in Las Vegas, and most of the time when the school serves pizza for lunch, it also happens to come with a lettuce salad and a small cup of ranch dressing. Nearly every kid spreads the ranch on top of the pizza without a second thought. I think a lot of kids now think of ranch as a condiment and not a salad dressing.

I used to live in Nebraska, and a pretty large percentage of the 30-and-under crowd there can't eat pizza, even good pizza, without salad dressing on it. I have never understood.

I have friends who do the verbal tipping thing and I hate it.

In general I hate eating with other people. One of my oldest friends is a "you don't tip on the sales tax" guy. I'll never understand that ... like tipping an extra 20% of 7% is going to kill you? That's less than 1.5% the cost of the meal! It makes me want to strangle him.
