A week in the Keys in April

Thanks, everybody and keep 'em coming! Blue Heaven is a favorite of my niece's and is listed in Road Food books so I'm sure we'll be going there.

Does anybody know anything about Mangrove Mama's on Sugarloaf?

St Pete Beach?

Try Walt's at St. Johns Pass - it's very small but we loved the fish, the gazpacho, the wine selections and the atmosphere. You can watch the boats go by as you eat!

Culinary food trip...

Portland, ME (seafood, blueberries)
Portland, Ore (fish, berries, wines, cheese)
Charleston, South Carolina (shrimp & grits, low country boil)
New Orleans (Cafe du Monde, Central Grocery for muffalettas)
Gulf Coast of Florida (so many types of seafood!)
All of my road trips are food trips and these suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg!

What's Cooking for the Big Game?

We're having shrimp creole and quick crab stew with some kind of pie for dessert. Neither of our teams are playing but my husband is rooting for the Saints because it's their first time (hence the seafood dishes) and I'm rooting for the Colts (well, mostly Peyton Manning) so we decided we'll have pie in honor of the Midwest -just haven't decided what flavor yet.

Your childhood favorites: Are they still guilty pleasures?

I'm 57 and I still crave my mother's great northern beans with chopped onion on top and cornbread. She also made some type of greens like collards or turnips but I didn't like those back then. Now, I've discovered that collards (cooked correctly with pork fat) are great!

NFL Playoffs Serious Eats-Style: Which Food Cities Rule Off the Field?

Thanks everyone! My husband and I were discussing what we would eat for the Super Bowl and I said "I bet they're already discussing it in depth on seriouseats and you didn't let me down! We're rooting for New Orleans and New York for the food and for the Colts and the Vikings for football. Both our teams (Packers and Cowboys) are out already :(
I can't wait to see how it shakes out and start planning the menu!

Anyone enjoy eating at Sam's Club or Costco snack bar?

Back in our less prosperous years with kids, we used to make a monthly trip to Sam's Club on a Friday night to shop and eat. We loved to get the sausages and giant sodas and the churros. We still do that for old time's sake every once in a while.

What are YOU making for Christmas dinner? Why?

We are so traditional and we love it! I even have a list that I keep updating every year called The Perfect Christmas Dinner. See our group fluctuates every year because the grandchildren and their children can't make it home every year because they have to be at their in-laws in other states. So one year we decided that we would ask each person who will be at Christmas dinner what would make it perfect for them.
And here's what we have:
Honeybaked ham
Broccoli Casserole
Mama's Potato Salad
Pole Beans or Stir-Fried Beans
Pretzel Salad
Crescent Rolls
Mama's Christmas Cake (every year she makes a different one)
If certain grandchildren are in town, we have to have deviled eggs.

Christmas breakfast in quiche lorraine and cranberry bread. Yum!

I Eat Because It's Tradition

We have this wonderful corned beef dip that we have eaten on Christmas Eve with Ritz crackers for over 20 years. We never have it any other time, but it's so-o good.

Hoppin' John on New Year's Day and I make this awesome buttermilk cornbread. Only once a year. And then the rest of the buttermilk sits in ther fridge and eventually gets more sour and we throw it away.
Weird.

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

I also love Thanksgiving - it's my favorite holiday, hands down. My favorite food is Mama's dressing. She bakes cornbread separately, sautes onion and celery, breaks up the cornbread and adds the vegetables, chicken broth, and some of the drippings from the turkey pan and then bakes the mixture. Since it never goes inside the turkey, it's not stuffing, but dressing, and it is yummy!
I love how everybody talks about how cozy Thanksgiving is. I absolutely agree and I love the day after, too. Turkey sandwiches on sourdough bread - yum!

Your Fast Food Urge.....just had mine...tasty.

Every once in a while I just have to have Nachos Supreme from Taco Bell (they aren't as good ever since the green onion scare, though) and a #1 combo with cheese from Krystal.

Your Edible Vice

Bread and real butter

How long does wine "keep?"

I agree - my brother-in-law is a big fan of boxed wines and I've actually found some not to be that bad. I don't like to keep wine around too long after first uncorking - and like MarvinDog said, it lasts about an hour at our house.

Do you like your chowder: thick or thin?

I just got back from a two-week vacation that took me through Boston, Maine and Nova Scotia. The best chowders were the thick ones with lots of seafood and potatoes. The most unique one I tried was the Rustic Clam Chowder in Bar Harbor. The menu promised prosciutto but 3 of us had bowls of it and never saw any. Maybe they meant it was just flavored with it??

4th of July: What's on Your Menu?

We're going to my sister's house for burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, a new recipe for potato salad that uses Yukon Gold potatoes, cole slaw and a light dessert using whipped topping, strawberries, blueberries and angel food cake.

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody! Now I'm even more excited about going!

What's everybody been doing...?

We're in Central Florida so grilling is pretty much a year-round activity for us. We do a lot of fish (Alaskan salmon and halibut that my husband caught there himself), asparagus, peppers, portobello mushrooms, squash and onion. My husband loves to grill so he'll fire it up for just about anything - burgers, hot dogs, chicken, ribs - and he does it very well, I might add. We enjoy a lot of time just drinking wine or beer outside while the food is cooking when it's not 100 degrees outside with 90% humidity. Floridians hibernate in the summer more than in the winter.

We're taking a trip to Maine and Nova Scotia in July with a one afternoon-one night stopover in Boston. Our very first 2-week vacation ever!

We also have lots of favorite restaurants that we go to where we can sit outside by the river or ocean. We attend art festivals and concerts at parks anywhere between St. Augustine and Orlando.
