I've never really understood the appeal of ...

chocolate. i used to just not eat it, but the whole culture of chocolate has made me really hate it.

a) the whole love-romance-sex-courtship-chocolate thing bums me out.

b) the way that people talk about chocolate bugs me, with the wink-wink, nudge-nudge, everybody-loves-it, hallmark-card-ness of it all.

c) the cutesy-pootsy chocolate therapy vibe is ridiculous.

c) i don't like foods that make me thirsty

Cook the Book: 'How to Cook Everything Vegetarian' Book Giveaway

okay so my favorite vegetarian recipe is my grandmother's dafina ( a moroccan jewish sabbath dish). it's usually made with a calf's foot but because my mother won't eat red meat, my grandmother makes it for her with wheatberries. essentially you add layered slices of onion, potato, sweet potato, cinnamon, paprika, a cup and a half of wheatberries tied up in a cheesecloth bag, a whole garlic bulb (unpeeled), raw eggs (in their shells), some olive oil and some water, put it all in a slow cooker and let it simmer for about 14-16 hours. by the next day everything has browned and caramelized so deeply even meat lovers go nuts for the dish. the eggs turn dark brown inside and the paprika gives everything a smoky flavor.

gah! i'm so homesick!

Weekend Book Giveaway: 'The Elements of Cooking'

The most important element for me is the people I'm cooking for. I mean I love to eat but I *really* love to feed people. Remembering what my friends like and don't like, surprising people with something that they mentioned once, crafting the elements of a meal to satisfy and entertain everyone, thinking and planning for weeks in advance, and then sitting back to watch people feel cared for, loved, and treasured... that's what makes me want to cook.

Morimoto's Cookbook Can Be Yours This Weekend

Hm. It's between Hiroyuki Sakai (a. because the ladies love him, b. because that wig is the best! and c) the japanese-french fusion is awesome) and Chen Kinichi (a. because he's so cute when he wins, and b. because I love Sechuan food.) I'm going to have to go with Chen Kinichi (especially because of the double foie-gra/asparagus competition that he tied).
