@ lemons - I have a lovely necklace with food pendants on it from this company here in the UK, they seem to have discontinued that line - but these earrings are cute (plus they have a few more food bits on the site too) - happy shopping:

Where to eat while in Europe?

London: (expenisve) Bentleys, Pont de La Tour, Baltic (not stricly British Food.....) and if it's open by then the Savoy for Afternoon Tea - if it's shut then I hear that the Ritz and the Wolsey are good. Roast over looks Borough Market (also a MUST VISIT for food lovers).

For something a bit cheaper, Smiths of Smithfield (esp for Brunch), anywhere on the Edgeware Road (all middle eastern food), Masala Zone or Brick Lane for Curry (Tayabs in White Chapel is bring your own booze), Diwana Bel Puri in Euston for veg. Indian food, The Eagle or Anchor and Hope pub for Sunday roasts, and the Golden Hinde for fish and chips! Alo Paul Roths deli is great. All can be googled I swear........

If you make it to Lyon in France - every place we went was amazing.

Have a great trip

Snapshots from the UK: Walkers' Crazy-Flavored Crisps Competition

Brannigan's Roast Beef & Mustard are indded a King of Crisps Michelle, but hard to find - when I source a supplier i bulk buy.

I admit I am totally addicted to crisps and here in the UK we have the best selections (this is based on minimal research - and the fact I had to smuggle huge bags of Salt and Vinegar crisps across the Swiss boarder when my sister moved there). Also good and unusal are:

Brannigan's Ham and Pickle (translation - chutney)
Burts Firecracker Lobster
Walkers Lamb and Mint

However - nothing beats Cheese and Onion with a pint of Ale in a Sam Smiths pub in london - heaven - Cheese and Onion crisps are a stable here and the undisputed best flavour ever

Serious Deal: Lunch at Curry Ya

I LOVE Serious eats but us Brits get a bad press sometimes - although "curry sauce" in England/UK is a uniform brown/yellow sauce it is not considered the same as curry - it's eaten with fish and chips mostly. Curry or Indian food here is very varied and increasingly more reigional - so there! : )

Serious Cocktails: Pining for Pimm's

From the horse country of Virginia I would like to add that Pimms makes the scene at many a race and polo match, as it should, of course. I love to take a couple of bottles along for a full afternoon of races, and believe me everyone who stops by leaves smiling. My recipe involves making my own sour mix of simple syrup, lemon AND lime juices, then pouring in a bit of that for each drink, add the Pimms, top with soda water, stir with the cuke. YUM.
Will be trying out adding mint and strawberries soon, sounds wonderful.

Serious Cocktails: Pining for Pimm's

I am a true Pimm's Cup devotee. I've only seen it on offer in one Indian restaurant I frequented on a business trip in downtown San Francisco. That was thirty years ago and I have long ago forgotten the name of the restaurant but not their food or drink. I wonder if anyone knows which establishment I am talking about. Seems in was down in a basement setting...
I ramble, over the years I have maintained my love affair whenever I would find Pimm's in our local state liquor store; a rare occasion (Seattle). From my perspective, it is more refreshing and appropriate for hot summer days than a Mint Julip. Now my southern ancestors are spinning in their graves.

When I studied abroad in England, I used to drink this all the time! Anytime I see it in a liquor store in the US, I buy it! It taskes great with ginger ale and a squeeze of lemon juice.

I began collecting Fanta cans and bottles when I first started traveling abroad. Similar to Coke, I can find Fanta in every country and in different languages, but what makes it unique is that a lot of countries have flavors that you can't find anywhere else. In Japan they have Melon Fanta, in they have some flavor called Shakara (or at least they did when I was there). I found some crazy blue flavor in Argentina and learned that in the Philippines it's actually called Royal. I have also made it a collection that only I can add to, so if I want a Fanta can from Australia, I'm going to have to go there myself. It's by far my favorite collection and I love watching it grow.

I collect salt. Everywhere I go I look for their local unique type of salt and bring it home. Hence I have salt from different places of different countries, so many different colors and textures! Most of them are mainly for collection, as I use pretty the same types (about 3-4) for cooking and eating.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! Keep them coming.

In Florence, try La Mangiatoia. Not open on Mondays, I think. It's by the Palazzo Pitti on the other side of the Arno.

If you're into noshing a bit here and there, try Cafe Perseo on the Piazza della Signora during happy hour. The beers and wines are a little more expensive, but they put out a huge spread of delicious appetizers.

Roast suckling pig in Spain. Beautiful crispy skin, moist and tender pork flesh. To die for!

Oh, and don't go for the absinthe. Unless you enjoy the taste of death by licorice.

In London, go to Falafel King by the Portobello market. A beautiful falafel sandwich wiith a cup of minted lemonade for under a fiver.

Pret is good, as is the chain Eat, which does sandwiches and soups.

Also in London, try the North Sea Fish Company in Bloomsbury (near King's Cross and Holborn) which serves perfectly cooked fish and chips...crispy, not greasy, and full of flavour.

Out of the pub chains, I think All Bar One has the best food, particularly the tapas and mezze plates and the Portobello mushroom, roasted pepper and haloumi burger. Be sure to get the frites.

Speaking of frites, you may want to look up Belgo (the best one is near Covent Garden). A pot of steamed mussels and frites, with a good Belgian beer, for less than you think.

And there's always Wagamama, the ultimate noodle bar in the UK. Communal seating, great dumplings, and house-made smoothies to go with terrific noodles served every possible way.

In Rome, try Zucca Gialla (Yellow Pumpkin) a small trattoria near the Piazza Navona. If you get to Florence, Vivoli for gelato. Also, we found that train stations offer good meals for good value. One of the best salads I have ever eaten was from a small to go place in the Lucerne, Switzerland train station. Also, don't know if you are driving, but in Italy there are places you can pull into from the road called Auto Grills---great food, freshly made at a great price. Have a great time!

Madrd: El Tigre for the best tapas! It is more of a local's place.

For London on the cheap, I enthusiastically recommend Pret a Manger. It's a chain of pre-made sandwich shops, but they're made with fresh ingredients. I also had good luck with the take-away sections at Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer. It's not fancy food, but I think the UK outperforms the US in this category by leaps and bounds. I've been genuinely happy to make a meal out of a take-away sandwich and a bag of crisps.

Get a bistecca alla fiorentina whilst in Italy. You can find the best ones in the Tuscany region north of Rome.

We tasted the whole range in our office (we're based in the UK). I have to say the onion bhaji and duck flavour are the least offensive, although I probably wouldn't choose to buy them. I found the builder's breakfast positively disgusting - "a hint of egg"? Nah, way to eggy for my liking. Yuk!
I think I'll stick with my favourite flavour - Walkers "Worcester Sauce".
