Cook the Book: 'Cooking Light The Complete Quick Cook'

Massaged Kale with avocado, tomato, lime and Coijito cheese. No cooking required but so delicious and healthy

Is there a way to get a restaurant reservation if they are full?

Being nice definitely always helps, I used to work in reservations at a few very popular restaurants. A lot of the time the books were full but there was always room to budge. I new where I had spots for VIP, but if someone called and was really nice and friendly I would try to make it work if I could . Lying that your assistant told you she made the reservation or that (not always possible) its a special occasion never works, hear those stories way too much.
Also if you happen to know a concierge at a hotel is helpful as reservationists work closely with several.

Seriously Asian: Korean Rice Cakes

I always seem to over cook them when I'm trying to make a dok boki using the small tubes....always turns out to gummy.

I was in Vietnam a few months back and had some street food that seemed to be pan fried rice cakes, then the women cracked an egg on top, added some other stuff and mixed it all up. Anyone know what this is, and what the other stuff was? All I remember is loving what I was eating and not really knowing what it was.

Chicharrón Preparado: Where to Find It in Queens

I finally found some Chicharrón Preparado in my area. I was walking home from the subway and lady with a shopping cart on Starr and Knickerbocker had a sign advertising them. $3 and pretty good- though it being my first Chicharrón Preparado, I did not have anything to compare it to. The pork skin seemed a bit stale though, but I still ate the thing.

Serious Cheese: Grilled Kimcheeze Sandwiches

I've made this a few times in the past- I like to fry the kimchi first so its not cold and helps melt the cheese faster. I also serve it with a Gochujang and katchup combination to dip in

Fast Food International: Jollibee

@paola have you been to Kuma Inn? I really like it- but I don’t know how it compares to what you have in mind or authenticity. Its the only Filipino food I have had, aside from a friends mothers home cooking. (I've also asked the same friend to go to Jollibee, but she hates it)
I'd love to know what you think. They have another location in BK- I forget the name...but it is what ever the work "To Drink" is...

Chicharrón Preparado: Where to Find It in Queens

I've never heard of this- but saw someone walking with one in hand Knickerbocker Ave in Bushwick this weekend. It looked sooo amazing. Ugg- I should have asked where they got it- I'll be on mission next week!

Taco Thursdays: Rockaway Taco, Queens

I tried Rock away Taco a few weeks ago after much anticipation and was left underwhelmed. The fish taco was really good, but the others lacked flavor. I live in bushwick and can get much better carnitas or chorizo tacos out there. I did love the vibe as it totally did feel like I was not in Brooklyn, but I don't have any desire to return. My current favorite taco place is Oaxaca Tacos- so many options and everything is really really good (but I still have love for my hole in wall palces in Bushwick).

Would You Eat This Lobster?

I'm writing to confess- I have such guilt!!!
I recently ate a 12 lbs lobster (said to be 80 years old).
We sat in the kitchen four over an hour debating to eat it (we won him in a raffle). We named him Dean.
Should we release him the Rockaways? Should we call NY1? Are we breaking a law? He is older then my Dad! He survived two world wars! This is not right.
But alas, we ate him. We decided he must have committed lobster suicide, after is much younger lobster girlfriend got caught in a trap.....life was no longer worth living
Not tough at all, but honestly not as flavorful as a smaller lobster. He was still very much enjoyed! We honored his live.
Now this story comes out and the guest at the dinner party feel ashamed.
Would I do it again? No I don't think so. Dean you will forever be in our hearts!!!

Cook the Book: 'Tacos'

The first time I had an authentic Mexican taco- with just meat, cilantro, onions and a a wedge of lime. I was probably about 15 and had only have my moms gringo tacos (with Ortega seasoning and hard shells) or tex-max. I’ve been in love with tacos ever since.
