Expensive Wine, So Five Minutes Ago
I have always found that the Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns really does apply to wine. Honsestly, how much better is a classic $500 bottle than a great $100 bottle? Or a great $100 bottle than a fantastic $50. Or even better when any are on sale!!!
I have tasted DRC's La Tache several times and found it to be a truly life altering experience. But the value of a gift is in the intent. So be it.
President Obama - God, it feels good to say that! - should have some great bang for the buck wines: Twisted Oak, Iridesse, Capozzi, Kaz, etc!
Self-promoting? Who me? ;^ )

Chilean wine Cono Sur makes a good sauv blanc and pinot noir, while Aussie vino Wyndham Estate also does a great budget pinot noir.
I think the economic downturn will have more people drinking at home so I think budget wine is seriously recession proof.

I'm all for this trend. Anyone can spend a bundle on a bottle, the fun is discovering something that's decent for a value.

Malbecs - Yes! Just started trying them, don't have too many varieties here. They taste very strong to me, so I drink slower, therefore saving me some money, haha!
I have also started drinking more whites which, at least where I am, tend to be a little cheaper than reds. Pinot grigios and chardonneys, yum! Plus, while whites are wonderful in the spring and summer, for my palate, they tend to match well with fall foods - turkey, root vegetables, etc. And isn't part of the enjoyment of wine is drinking what YOU like, with good food and friends, and not necessarily what is trendy, hip, expensive???

Deb, my "fun" night job is working in a supermarket wine department only about two miles south of Camp Obama here in Chicago. So if he or Michelle stops by, I will be sure to report back if they reach for Beer or the Beaujolais!
And archangel: If you subscribe here to Serious Eats, I am sure you know that there is much more to beer than 40s!

I'm quite fond of South American Malbecs.
Affordable, drinkable, great with a steak.

Quote: "The huarache, sort of like a Mexican version of pizza, ..." At least the Mexicans have enough creativity to give their dish an original name — unlike that other abomination found in Chicago, so-called deep-dish "pizza." If that non-Italian (and, therefore, interloper in the pizza business) named Ike had had the decency to call his creation "deep-dish tomato, cheese, and bread casserole," there would be no problem. But to call it pizza is an insult to real Neapolitan pizza.

I've only been to the Maxwell Street Market once but I recall a sea of food vendors and I remember seeing huaraches there for the first time. I was already too stuffed to try one. Aren't there several that serve huaraches? Which one should I look for?

Oh my God....I love the flavor of the masa...and topped with all the other things...ohhhhh. I make an old favorite called Tamale Pie that satisfies those corny cravings for me. Methinks it's time for me to make it again!
