Turkey Bacon
Depending on where you live, there's this great brand called Ed Hipps that I LOVE. I've been sans pork for about 10 years, and that is the only turkey bacon I can eat that doesn't look strange to me. I say depending where you live because I haven't been able to find it in areas that don't have a big Jewish or Muslim population.
I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...
As a kid I used to take a spoon and put peanut butter on one half and Smuckers strawberry jam on the other.....pure bliss!!
Dittos to olives, pickles (especially the brine...yum) and fluff!!

@ jword2001.....Fatman's is still around serving up some GREAT fried fish!

A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
I would also add Rembrandt's in the running for a good burger in Philly!

City Flavor Guide: Grand Rapids
Wohoo!! I was raised in Grand Rapids, and I must say....it's a foodie's DREAM!!! Even though this is in East Grand Rapids, Wolfgang's has the BEST Breakfast ever. My friends and I used to skip class (sorry mom....and Ms. Widdis!) to go there for breakfast.
Charley's Crab is probably the best sit down seafood restaurant you'll find. Now, if you just want some fried whiting and fries, Fry Daddy's on Division is the place!!
Jamaican Dave's on Wealthy is one of the only Caribbean restaurants in West Michigan, and Dave is one of the friendliest people you'll meet!
I have dreams about Beltline Bar's Wet Burritos....when I come home from Philly for the holidays, my first stop is Beltline Bar!! Beware, as stated earlier, Beltline Bar is straight tex mex.
@ Sadiepix...I went to Western Michigan University (Go Broncos!!) in K'zoo.....the closest Mexican spot I know of is Big Burrito....good for a tostada after a drunken night, but that's about it!
Oh....and I would kill someone over Vitales lasagna and garlic rolls
And I would pay lots of money for some bar-b-que from Sandmans!!
I could go on and on......I LOVE my city's food!!
Serious Eats...in Philadephia?
I'm sooo sorry I missed this post before you came to the city of brotherly love!! How was your trip? Where did you eat?!
Regional Fast Food Chains
I'm from Michigan, and we have Culver's.....best custard shakes EVER!!! And White Castle is pretty big in the Detroit area, my friends and I used to drive clear across the state for some chicken rings and little burgers!!
In Philly, there's a Dunkin Donuts on every corner, something that came as a total surprise to me, cause we rock with Krispy Kreme in the midwest!!! DD has NOTHING on Krispy Kreme!
Eating in Las Vegas
We went last August and went to The Grand Lux Cafe in the Venetian....pretty good! Also, Stripburger was great and there's a sushi place in the Fashion Show Mall that had good cheap rolls and great drinks....we went on Service Industry night and the specials were GREAT!
Confetti Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes
I made these on Saturday for my roommates birthday party and they were A HIT!!!! Everyone gathered around the oven to watch me pour the batter into the cones......and waited whiel they were baking. I have anold school double oven, and unfortuantely the bigger oven went bananas that day and the ones on that side needed to bake in the other oven while the other batch was cooling. I had to beat people off with a stick so that they wouldn't touch the done ones!!!!
I attempted to use real ice cream as the "frosting ice cream" and placed it in a piping bag.....didn't work, I had ice cream all over the place!!! We were having a "going back to your childhood/Back to School" party, so it defintely added to the nostalgic factor of it, seeing grown ups with ice cream running down their hands and faces was pretty great!!
Thanks for the great idea, I will defintelt be making them again!
Chain Restaurants (not fast food)
Coming from a suburban mid west background, I lived on chain restaurants!! Red Lobster was a favorite and in college, Bennigans became my best friend (the reuben sandwich and brownie bottom pie used to make my day)
Now that I'm in Philly, I try not to go to chains, there's so many other places I could go! But, I love Corner Bakery and Au Bon Pain for lunch!!
When on the Jersey Turnpike, Eat at Popeyes
No_Pam, where in Philly is there a Popeye's?!?! I moved here a couple years ago, and have yet to find the joy that is Popeye's in the city of brotherly love!!!
I remember that as a child Roy Rogers was one of the only fast food joints that were "good quality" (as if there is such a thing when it comes to true fast food joints). But, I recently made the same mistake and had some Roy Rogers fried chicken on the NJ turnpike!!! Yeah, that was a pretty traumatic experience!!
Harlem Soul Food rec?
There's this great place on 125th called Mobay.....went there last Sunday, great food, live music and wonderful drinks!! The service was great too!! Another is Manna's.....they're all over the place and while I haven't been there, I've heard great things. For a "Harlem Experience" Slyvia's could work....but it is a bit of a touristy spot!!
Happy eating!!!
City Flavor Guide: Grand Rapids
GR has come a long way from the days when the best place to eat was Charlie's Crab. Cool places like the Green Well and Winchester's serve up great food. The Electric Cheetah has sandwich's and soup are already putting the EC at the top of the list. Marie Catrib's and the Real Food Cafe never fail to please. Both restaurants are smoke free and get it right every time for breakfast and lunch.
For real GR old timers the Beltline Bar and Yesterdog are the places to go. I have to differ with those that sing their praises. They are unique. However, they aren't good. The food has the consistency of gerber.
For the "gut bomb" crowd. (Think Diners Drive-in's and Dives) The Choo Choo, Fat Boys, The Cottage, Teasers, The Wealthy Street Station and Sandmann's will all give you your fix of artery clogging joy.
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
I'm a Philadelphian, and as far as hamburgers are concerned, I think they're best when they're simplest -- a non-intrusive bun, good beef, a slice or two of American cheese. That's the best part of a burger and all I really want. Sometimes a slice of tomato or a strip of bacon on top.
As for cheesesteaks, try John's Roast Pork http://www.johnsroastpork.com/. They have fantastic cheesesteaks and roast pork sandwiches, the best I've had.
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
it's not a burger if there isn't bacon on it!
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
Many places make the mistake of forming the hamburger patty by beating it senseless. The perfect burger is formed by very gingerly handling the meat and forming a patty very loosely, as described here: http://rootsliving.com/?p=286
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
Good Dog Tavern and Standard Tap along with great beer!
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
Ahhhhh, my town....As far as the best burger in Philly goes, 5 guys can make a legit claim, but that company is franchised and is hardly a Philly tradition. It's easy to find a good burger all over the place. I like to go somewhere, anywhere that has a good atmosphere, good beer, and a huge LCD to watch my Phils, Birds, and Flyboys. Try the Flat Rock Saloon on Main st in Manayunk.
For the beloved cheesesteak, no one has mentioned it yet, but Jim's....Jim's, Jim's, Jim's. Hands down the best in the city. Yes, a bit touristy, but so good. Delasandro's has lost a beat in the past 10 years, Chubby's too. Pat's and Geno's while consistant, and good, are all about reputation. Tony Luke's makes an excellent pork sandy, Steve's is great, though my vote has gotta be JIM'S!
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
i think my grandma was the first to give us hot dogs with ketchup no bun - so although its not something I go for now, its a fond memory
the hubby on the other hand will make beans and franks (ew) and douse 'em in ketchup...have i grossed everyone out yet?
so guess us freaks are attracted to each other
btw, what's catsup?
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
@jesswalker9--Totally agree about Tony Luke's roast pork with broccoli rabe. The best I'v ever tasted. As a local I, like many others, was a devout
fan of D'Nic's in Reading Terminal. Never did I think I would ever have a roast pork better than theirs. I have a new fav in Philly.
I'm not the burger fan in the house, that's hubbie's thing. Went out with a friend to a local bar, O'Mare's in the Somerton section of Philly. He spoke about this burger for days. Claimed it was by far the best he has ever had.
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
i have to agree with EazyB & Hawk Krall, i think standard tap has the best burger in phillly. i liked royal taverns burger, but i just am not the biggest fan of melted gouda - but their fries! MMMM
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
My question is, where did you get a cheesesteak that the guys were actually putting ketchup on for the customer? I've always had to add my own ketchup to my cheesesteaks.
And speaking as a native Philadelphian, I can honestly say that there is no orthodox cheesesteak topping. Many of us (myself included) despise whiz and go for American or Provolone cheese. I think grilled onions might be a requirement tho.
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
Mayo on a hot dog??? Gross!!
Maybe the pepper should be sliced and not whole on the burger....
A Return Visit to Royal Tavern, the Best and Worst Hamburger I Ate in Philadelphia
"again what's with the ketchup nazis? no other combination of foods is looked down upon with such vehemence."
Hear, hear!
As someone who is deathly allergic to mustard (quite a pain, having to ask about ingredients in just about any kind of sauce or dressing...), my options are pretty limited on the occasions I might indulge in a hot dog. I'll take ketchup over dry, but hold the anti-ketchup discrimination, por favor! ;-)
Turkey Bacon
I'd pick Canadian Bacon over Turkey Bacon any day.
Turkey Bacon
eat less of the regular bacon.
turkey bacon is full of all kinds of junk to get it to look like bacon. less fat or more chemicals -- your choice.
Turkey Bacon
Try Applegate Farms Natural Turkey Bacon if you can find it. It's so much better than Louis Rich or Jennie O. The texture and flavor are outstanding.
Turkey Bacon
I used to eat turkey bacon (louis Rich), but in truth real bacon isn't that bad. Get a very good brand (McKensie's, for me) and cook it crisp. The pkg lists 2 slices as 75 calories, That's all it takes for a BLT, and it's only the same calories as 3 saltines. Once a week, why not - and it's probably better for you than the turkey stuff.
I've been reading Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food," and one of the things he says is not to eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize (the list of ingredients being part of this). You grandmother (or great-grand, depending) would recognize bacon. Turkey bacon not so much.
Turkey Bacon
Turkey bacon....say it out loud and think about it for a minute. Do you still really want to eat this stuff?
Turkey Bacon
I have tried for years to like that stuff to no avail. I'll eat it, I've got some in the freezer, but really prefer just a good run on name brand center cut hickory smoked real pig! So I'm also on South Beach and have happily given up my simple carbs with the right to indulge occasionally in some crispy fried bacon.
Although the SB folks tend to want to push you to Turkey bacon, I've found I'm still losing weight, blood pressure is down, blood work is excellent, even though about three times a month I'll go for the omelet with a rasher of bacon.
The real stuff can't be replicated!
Turkey Bacon
I'm going to second dbcurrie's thoughts. Go for the real stuff, just watch your portions and drain the fat - or better yet, bake it on a wire rack so the fat drips off. Turkey bacon is a strange product usually filled tons of preservatives and whatnots, plus its nowhere near as tasty! Indulge wisely and kill the craving.
Turkey Bacon
To me, turkey bacon tastes more like ham product than like bacon. If someone's craving bacon, it might not satisfy.
If it was me, I'd fry it crispy so that you render more of the fat, use fewer slices and spread them out a little better, and pile on the lettuce and tomato. A whole grain bread is also good for swooshing the fat out of your system.
Another idea would be to buy the bacon from a place that will slice it for you from the slab, and have them slice it extra thin. That way you can put on more slices but it will be less bacon.
Turkey Bacon
I read that quite often Turkey Bacon has more fat than the regular pork bacon. I guess reading the labels is your best bet as @tapioca wrote.
Turkey Bacon
It's never the same as real bacon, but I always look for the "South Beach" turquoise emblem on the package and get that one. It was Louis Rich for a while, now it's something else I think. That's how I pick.
Turkey Bacon
Be very, very careful with turkey bacon. People are so afraid of fat these days that they forget about everything else. Turkey bacon varies wildly in amounts of sodium with some brands having as much as 10 times the amount of sodium found in real bacon. Read your labels carefully.
I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...
ShawnaAdora had it right...and I guess we're the only ones....
MIRACLE WHIP right from the jar! I eat it sprinkled with black pepper. If I feel fancy, I spread it on crackers!
Cold Chef Boyardee ravioli's from the can ( a childhood vice)
Peanut butter
Eagle Brand milk
Garlic stuffed olives captured with a fork
