Video: Have You Ever Slaughtered Your Own Turkey?

I've never slaughtered a turkey but when I was living at home with my parents I helped raise and slaughter chickens. It's not a pleasant process but you get an appreciation of where your food comes from. My family has also raised pigs and the occasional steer for meat as well but we had a professional processor slaughter and butcher those. My parents still raise a few chickens but for eggs rather than meat (every time I visit I come home with lots of delicious free eggs).

Boston Baked Beans, and Other Foods Named After Different Foods

@kissyfur There must be another food called mincemeat because the kind I know DOES contain meat and it is minced.

@Clobby Actually the meaning of pudding in Yorkshire pudding is the original meaning, only in the US does pudding mainly refer to a custard-like dessert.

I can't think of any that haven't already been mentioned.

Video: Killing and Eating the Wild Boar 'Problem' in Texas

A "balanced ecosystem" would be one without the feral pigs. This isn't like overpopulation of deer which is caused by eliminating natural predators and reindroducing the predators would solve the problem. Wild boars are not a native species, the predators for them just aren't there and never have been which is why they are so destructive. The only limits on their population is human hunting and food availability and pigs will eat just about anything so it's not much of a limit.

Zero Proof: Mulled Pomegranate 'Wine'

I've made mulled cranberry juice before, it's quite yummy. I don't use quite this recipe but the ingredients are pretty much the same as I use (just differing amounts).

Poll: Do You Use Pre-Ground or Fresh Nutmeg?

Fresh all the way. Whole nutmeg will last practically forever without losing it's flavor which is the main reason I use it. I love nutmeg but honestly I don't use it that often so it makes more sense from a shelf-life perspective. Same goes for a lot of other spices that I don't use frequently, whole spices just keep better.

Poor Maraschino Cherries, Everyone Is Always Picking on Them

I've never liked maraschino cherries, but I generally don't like that sort of syrupy sweet. I just don't get the appeal of them. I love fresh cherries though and will eat them any chance I get.

What Foods Do You Miss Most as an Expat?

My brother isn't quite an expat, he was in the military (and his wife still is) so he's been moved all over the world and US. Every time he visits home here in Maine the first thing he wants are the red natural casing hot dogs that seem to only be available in New England.

The Salmonella Scare: Are You Eating Fewer Eggs?

No, but I get all my eggs for free from my parents and their small flock. Might be entirely in my head but I think they taste better, and I know for certain the hens are much happier and healthier than commercially raised birds.

A Lasagna Showdown: Sandra Lee vs. Matilda Cuomo

Now I'll admit I like lazagna with cottage cheese because I like the texture better with the larger curds and more liquid. However tomato soup? It's not like tomato sauce is hard to come by or expensive. I always have cans of tomato sauce and diced tomatoes on hand, they're pretty much the definition of a pantry staple.

Are There Foods You Can't Keep In The House?

Salt and vinegar chips. Any other potato chip I can eat in moderation but salt and vinegar I will eat the whole bag at once. So I make it a rare treat to get a small bag.

Do You Have a Hard Time Eating Animal-Shaped Foods?

Animal shaped foods don't bother me at all. I do get a little squeamish with whole animals on a plate. Something about my food looking at me is kind of creepy so I prefer my fish sans head.

'Slate' Forgets That Urban Hipsters Aren't the Only Ones Canning Food

Forget the frugal aspect of it. When I have 50lbs of ripe green beans and another 50 ripening what am I supposed to do with them? They get made into pickles or blanched and frozen.

I've never canned anything I didn't grow or pick myself (either wild growing berries or farms that let you pick your own strawberries or apples which is a nice way to spend a day). Is it a necessity? Of course not. I could not go berry picking or throw out extra produce from my garden and buy canned veggies and jam but that's wasteful and honestly my homemade blackberry jam is a lot better than anything from a store. I live in a rural area, this is something almost everyone here does regardless of if it's trendy.

If more people are canning that's great! They're learning how fun it is and how much great variety of things you can make and can. How many stores stock bread and butteer zucchini relish? Or elderberry jam?

Pizza Girl: Scary Delivery Situations

This is not a good story to read not 5 minutes after reading this one about a pizza delivery guy who got beaten and robbed. http://consumerist.com/2010/03/burgled-dominos-delivery-guy-ordered-to-pay-back-money-stolen-from-him.html I can't even articulate how I feel about the manager in this story.

Braver girl than me, I'd never last doing delivery.

Do You Hate Popcorn?

I was spoiled as a kid by my grandfather's kettle corn. I HATE microwave or movie theater popcorn (the fake butter smell is so disgusting). If theaters

By the way, as someone who grew up on a farm, popcorn does not look like sheep shit, raisinets on the other hand.

Video: Farming and Breeding Rabbits for NYC Restaurants

Domestic rabbits were derived from northern European wild rabbits and have traditionally been raised outdoors. They are perfectly suited to cold weather. I have two pet rabbits who live in an outdoor pen all summer and in an unheated shed in the winter, they love it and are now quite elderly bunnies.

I have no problem eating rabbit, though I've never actually eaten a domestic rabbit just wild rabbits. I'm sure they taste different like all game animals vs the domestic variety. Yes they are cute, so are lambs and I have no problem eating them either and I've always wanted to try guinea pig but haven't had the chance.

There are domestic animals I wouldn't eat due to personal emotional connection, horses, dogs, cats (though considering what the later two eat I can't think they are too tasty, carnivorous mammals generally aren't) but I have trouble working up outrage for others eating them. I save my outrage for gratuitous, useless slaughter and abuse.

What's The Best Sandwich You've Ever Had?

I wish I could remember the name of this restaurant but last time I was in New York I had the best chicken BLT. This is already my favorite sandwich to make but this restaurant did a fantastic job. TIt was on a nice crusty baguette, the chicken was nicely seasoned and grilled, with romaine lettuce, big thick slices of tomato, smoky crispy bacon, and sharp cheddar but what really brought it together was this amazing herb mayonaise that I have been trying to replicate at home without success.

Alton Brown's Sardine-Avocado Sandwich Diet

I'll take any excuse to eat more sardines, I love them so much. That recipe did get me to try avocados again and find that I like them now (one of those foods I hated as a kid).

I really applaud Alton for losing the weight, it's hard to do especially when you really enjoy food. Got me motivated (we'll see for how long) I'm committed to making smoothies to drink while I work rather than pepsi. Since I love carbonation I took the soy milk out of the recipe he showed and added soda water. So far so good.

Have You Ever Experienced Pine Mouth?

It's never happened to me, however I don't have pine nuts often I'm on a budget and they are expensive here (go figure since I live in the pine tree state). Sounds very unpleasant.

On a related note, I'll never forgive my dad for giving me spruce gum to try when I was a kid. That stuff is horrible.

What's the Worst Burn You've Endured While Eating?

Hot greasy pizza, yeah nothing scalds the mouth like hot oil.

Worst cooking is no question, severe 2nd degree burn on my arm from hitting it on the inside of the oven door taking a pizza out of the oven. Since the oven was at 500 degrees it didn't take more than a brief bump. Still have a 1 inch by 3 inch scar on my arm. Lesson well learned.

Seriously Asian: How to Take a Fat Hiatus

I love pickles so much, there is little I won't eat in pickled form (except pigs feet, don't understand why anyone would want to eat them). There's plenty of flavor in non-fat form, I love good crisp fresh veggies without drowning their flavor in dressing though they're hard to come by this time of year in the Northeast.

Eat for Eight Bucks: Split Pea Soup and Simplest Slaw

I LOVE split pea soup. Anytime I make bone in ham I make split peas soup shortly after using the leftover bone. It adds wonderful smokey flavor to the soup and you get a little more use out of something that would normally be thrown out right away. I like to eat pea soup with warm buttered biscuits so good in the cold Maine winter.

I have no problem getting through the leftovers, while the soup is still warm I ladle it into individual storage bowls to pop into the microwave for lunch the next day or store in the freezer for next time I have a craving.
