Otokomae at Sunrise Mart, Revelatory Tofu Imported from Japan

@fressagirl: i have been eating the tofu completely plain—as in the first photo. i was surprised not to want to add anything, but it is really delicious just as is. that said, i also look forward to experimenting with it. suggestions are welcome!

Finding Pulque, the Ancient Mexican Drink, in Williamsburg

@JungMan: where did you find pulque? Do you happen to know what brand it was or who the importer was? i checked back with my contacts and i'm fairly certain boulder imports has a monopoly on pulque, and they definitely haven't brought it to new york yet. i was unable to find another importer/distributor, but perhaps it's time for some community reporting... any sightings are welcome. check the can for the import company! thanks.

Taste Test: Greek Yogurt

My favorite is Kesso Foods, it is rich and thick 2%, and the container says 2 servings it is easily 4 so not so bad calorie-wise. It's always at Sahadi's & occasionally at Fairway, with some fruit & a sprinkling of Early Bird Granola (just a sprinkling because it is so expensive)...divine.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but Oikos was a sponsor at the US tennis Open. Free samples were distributed throughout the 15 days. I'm an eater of plain yogurt so was not into the blueberry, but did find it funny my sample came with recipes for Tuna Burgers, Tzatziki and Pina Coladas. Yum: tuna+blueberry.

That said, Chobani is my second favorite plan yogurt after Greek Gods.

this stuff is incredible. i've had another tofu from the same maker from Sunrise and it's just the best stuff i've had. i like to top it with a little yuzu-soy dressing.

thanks! absolutely amazing, I will keep my eyes out for it! It does sound like a great thing to bring for lunch.

@fressagirl: No cooking required. I'll often buy a couple of three-packs and eat 'em up for lunch.

Yay, Lalli!
Otokomae makes another line of soft tofu that comes in a three-pack of dome rounds. "Hot Dude" is milder, but the dome rounds are more flavor-rich (if that's your thang).

Favored savory toppings include yuzu kosho / freshly grated wasabi root / dashi and scallions / pickles (e.g., shiso buds, kuromame, curried baby cucumber)

Favored sweet toppings include kuromitsu / reduced ginger syrup & minced bits of candied ginger

Sorry, I feel like I am missing something- it looks like you are just eating it out of the container- it doesn't require cooking? That would be awesome

So awesome! I ran into Thu shopping in Soho in May. I think she was totaly surprised that someone recognized her, she was taken back a bit. Cutely embarrassed! Love her. I am going to tell everyone I know to watch.

Good luck Thu!

Finding Pulque, the Ancient Mexican Drink, in Williamsburg

I tried pulque a few years ago at La Palapa. I didn't really know what it was at the time or that it was hard to find. Now I'm wondering where they got it from. It didn't come from a can.

It's only a matter of time before homemade/handmade/artisanal pulque starts showing up at Brooklyn Flea and/or sold from a truck.

Sugar Rush: Doughnut Plant's Churros

i haven't had the filled churros, but i have to say that i really loved the regular ones and thought that they were not missing out on. the ones i had were just the right amount of chewiness and dough and the sugar sprinkling was excellent. so maybe the ones i got were right out of the fryer. i do imagine they don't age well.

Sugar Rush: Doughnut Plant's Churros

I so love those churros! They are moist but not too sweet, and the dusting of cinnamon sugar is just heavenly. Definitely should be eaten right out of the fryer, though...
