Cook the Book: Beef Jerky

I'm 2 hours into roasting these, and they smell incredible! I can't wait to taste the finished product.

Can You Learn to Cook from Cookbooks?

I learned to cook from internet recipes and trial/error.

I'm no chef, but I'd say you can get pretty good with nothing but a book.

Dinner Tonight: Pork Tenderloin Sandwich

The pork tenderloin sandwich is what I think of when I think of Indiana food. There's a lunch spot in my hometown that does an incredible tenderloin.... Now I want one.

Where's the Love for Chestnuts?

I had roasted chestnuts for the first time this fall, and I love them! They're so rich and buttery with nothing added to them. Just score, bake, and eat.

Teacher Blogs About School Lunches

My high school served the basic stuff similar to what she's blogging about, but they also had (extremely unhealthy) "a la carte" menu with actual edible food which was better-packaged, cleaner-looking, and generally much tastier.

It struck me as profoundly stupid then, and it's clearly not gotten better.

The Case Against Ketchup

I like my burgers covered with green chiles, or hot sauce and onions, or mustard and onions....

But without those things available, ketchup works. And let's be honest... outside a nice restaurant, most burgers need a little moisture loving.

Familiar to Millions: Weber Grill Restaurant, Indianapolis, Indiana

I've been there; it's a pretty good burger. No complaints from me.

The dining options within just a mile of that place, however, make it hard for me to want to go back.

New Mexico Sopaipilla Roundup

About half of the Mexican restaurants around here in Indiana serve sopapillas, so I don't think they're strictly a NM delicacy. ;-)

@dbcurrie I found this person last New Year's, and I can tell you that it's a wonderful goal to have. :-)

Dinner Tonight: Spicy Spaghetti with Fennel and Herbs

We just made this the other night. Really tasty. I had no idea fennel was so delicious!

Cocktails and Spirits with Paul Clarke: Adding Spice

I like a jalapeno (from a jar) dropped into a Corona along with a lime.

Gives the beer a mild heat and some of that jalapeno flavor.

Or a dash of Tabasco mixed into a glass of Four Roses bourbon. You can't taste it, but you can feel the warmth of it.

Long Live The Tablecloth?

Loud restaurants are a real turn-off for me, but other than that I don't mind casual dining - it certainly has its place.

Is the absolute number of nice restaurants actually going down, or is it more the case that the number of casual restaurants is growing disproportionately?

Mixed Review: Trader Joe's Beer Bread

I made a loaf of beer bread using Guinness Extra Stout, and it really did make a difference. I enjoyed it, but I'm a Guinness lover; others didn't care for the beeriness. Lighter beers do tend to make a more crowd-pleasing beer bread.

The Crisper Whisperer: Quick-Poached Asian Pears

We bought an Asian pear not long ago, and it was really unpleasant... mealy and bland. I wonder if we got a bad one. I had written them off as inedible.

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

This is a really interesting thread. Some of my friends are vegetarian, and we're doing a joint pre-Thanksgiving party, so we're trying to figure out what to cook for them (they don't know either!)

Egg, runny yolk, bacon, American cheese, on an everything bagel. I eat em at every hour of the day.

Video: How to Eat a Chicken Wing

I have my own technique. I push the middle section of meat up and bite it out, then rip the wing at one end to unfold it with the "hinge" at one end. Then eat the meat off of each bone. No cartilage consumption (blech) and I get all the meat off the bone.

What Your Beer Says About You

I don't understand the Bud Light bashing. It's a neutral mass-market flavor, certainly not distinctly offensive. If you want to say it's boring, I completely agree, but that it tastes bad? It truly doesn't, unless anything that's not interesting is "bad" to you.

When I drink Bud Light, there are a few possible reasons.

1.) I didn't pay for it.
2.) I have 10 seconds to order at a restaurant that fails to advertise their beer list.
3.) The other options are crappy micros that people drink just because they're micros.

It's a beer that will always taste predictably "meh" for me. Like ordering water when you can't think of what else to drink.

All-You-Can-Eat Restaurants: Great Deal, Or Bad Policy?

I just can't handle the food quality at the average all-you-can eat chain... Quantity is no issue when you don't want to eat it at all.

Salty mashed potatoes, ambiguous soggy meat dishes, and weak attempts at exotic cuisine that still manage to taste like fast-food fried chicken... Noooo thank you.

The Perfect Fried Egg Sandwich

Oh, egg sandwiches... for me, it's gotta be a toasted bagel or English muffin, an egg cooked til the unbroken yolk is hot but not solid, two strips of bacon, pepper, and a slice of American cheese. If the yolk runs down your chin during consumption, it's perfect.

Zaharakos: A Wonderful Trip Back in Time with Burgers and Floats in Columbus, Indiana

I used to eat at Zaharako's during lunchtimes when I was in high school at Columbus North. At the time, it was typically empty for lunch, and the place was in pretty sad shape, but the food was still amazing - Gom with fries and a Green River was a great quick lunch. It's great to hear that the restaurant has been restored to something like its former glory.
