BUTTER OVERLOAD

I am with the pastry people. Practice making all those things like croissants and puff pastry and strudel that are expensive to learn because of all the butter required. (Assuming that you aren't an expert already! ;)

Bake the Book: 'Handheld Pies'

I made a killer part sweet/part tart cherry slab pie this summer. It was amazing and it would make a good hand pie because, like the slab pie, it would also have a high pastry to fruit ratio.

Super Bowl Giveaway: 10-Pound Box of Pat LaFrieda Sliders

I will go to the same party that I always go to wherein a few people watch football and most of the guests hang out, watch commercials, and try to out do each other with great party foods.

Grace/prayer at a dinner party

There is a big difference between awkward/uncomfortable and offended so those of you who do say grace please stop assuming that because someone feels one way they also feel the other. I am not Buddhist... or Christian, Jewish, or any other organized faith. I am truly without religion and I was raised that way. I do not mind grace being said and I do not mind when someone assumes that I will join them in expressing a sincere sentiment of gratitude for food or the company of those around me.
I am very uncomfortable when that grace takes the tone of a particular religious belief and assumes by the chosen wording that I join in that belief. I often find this to be the case with certain types of conservative Christianity.
I go beyond uncomfortable and become downright offended when the chosen wording specifically states nasty things about non-Christians (me) and hopes that they (I) will see the error of our ways and "come home to Jesus" so that they (I) will not be condemned to everlasting hell.
My point is that there are a lot of different ways that this can go. Usually I am perfectly comfortable being grateful for food my way while you do so in yours but there really are times when the people subjecting me to grace are doing so gracelessly and when that happens I am not the one in the wrong for being offended.

Where are you posting from in 2012?

@beersnob and erin_in_AR You are both right, of course. I was being facetious and did not mean to offend. I have also lived here my entire life. Although I would like to point out that while beef on wick does show up in Rochester sometimes it really is of distinctly Buffalo origins.

I would like to see a Chicago deep dish trend. Maybe this is only a problem here in western NY state, but the only place even making it is Pizzeria Uno. :-P

Oh yeah, Metromint is the wonderful!

It is too bad the cucumber isn't better. I really like water with cucumber slices instead of lemon sometimes. Ups the palette cleansing refresh of plain water but works better with some foods than lemon.

Airport Food That Doesn't Suck

I think that Jetblue's Terminal 5 offerings are a high point in airport food. I have not tried 5ive Steak yet but there are a lot of good choices there not the least of which is the food court. You can get fresh and appetizing salad bars, soup bars, desserts, baked goodies, sandwiches, veggie and dip packs, fresh fruit packs, candy bars, chips, etc, etc... All at food court speeds and one cashier for all the choices. Every time I am there I am genuinely grateful that someone was so thoughtful about how this was put together.
