Pumpkin: *Way* or *No Way*
Bring it!!! Pumpkin beer is a major highlight come October. Love the soft pumpkin cookies with buttercream on top!! Wish Starbucks kept Pumpkin lattes all year around
Cook the Book: 'Simple Fresh Southern'
broccoli with cheese sauce
Mixed Review: Ad Hoc's Fried Chicken Mix
I must admit I was taken in with Keller's name so I tried the mix, there are two bags of mix and I actually threw the other one away. I didn't like the end result as all, a lot of time and effort for nothing. Short cuts are not the way to go when dealing with fried chicken. Never again. Next time it's old bay and flour-that's it!

Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace in Columbus, Ohio
I've eaten here once and I was very disappointed that the blocky cheddar cheese was out of a package and not shredded fresh and the hot dogs were not even remotely hot...............the decor is fantastic and the service very friendly but the food needs some work.
Since the owners have three or four other restaurants in Columbus everyone is really "drinking the Kool-aid" but I have got to be honest here and say I won't be rushing back anytime soon.
Slim Jim Shortage in Effect
This is the first time I heard that there was an explosion at the plant, the way i heard it on the news was "three people have died from a freak accident" I seriously thought three people might have been killed by huge industrial choppers or mixers.....not that it was not devastating enough. I can't imagine being a family member and realizing your loved one died while at their job. I wish them time and healing.

Dear Food Network, Please Stop
We just caught the show "The best thing i ever ate....." and I really like it but I'd love to see overseas culinary programs on FN, I was in Italy for three weeks and happened to catch a lot of great food shows from Canada and the BBC. How about :
Charlie Rose type show where it's one on one with a culinary person for an hour.
An educational show on Wine
Have a host travel to the best Inns of the world
Have a host travel to the best gastropubs
A behind the scenes look on the making an issue of a popular food magazine
Ask Daniel to do "After hours" for FN
FN PLEASE stop producing your own copy cat version of other food shows!! Terrible!! Especially the "reality" shows!
Long Flights - BYOF?
I read an article once that a lot of business men actually pack an assortment of babyfood when going on long flights- I found this to be SOO strange. If it works it works I suppose..............
What do you collect?
Frig magnets...you can barely see the white paneling on the Sub -zero there are so many!! I really miss those cool little shops in Vegas that used to sell Magnets for $15.00 each that looked like life size foods.
Who loves Anne Burrell?!
Sorry, count me out on this one. Didn't like the show from the start and tried to hang there. At least they dressed her better in the second season.....
PS Glad to see Robert Irvine back on the Food channel-what are you gonna do? We are all human and make mistakes.........
Who Should Be on Reality TV: White, Steingarten, or Ramsay?
Ramsey then White. Period. Steingarten is about as annoying as Alice Waters.
'Top Chef' Season 5, Finale: All Bets Are Off
Did anyone else think it was unfair that Fabio was there at the dinner?? Going from Contestant to judge when you have already lost.....
Sous vide...that was SO last year! I was heartbroken that Carla listened to Casey. I don't blame Casey it's just a sad situation. Am I glad Hosea won?..... sure.....none of us will REALLY know what that is like to be on TV like that. I will say that Leah lasted a lot longer then she should have.
Oh well, guess I'll be waiting for Marco Pierre's show on the 11th........

Le Creuset: Is it worth it?
I believe people who don't have Le Creuset or bad mouth it just can't afford it and say it's a waste of money. It is a lot of money especially now in this economy but I think it's an excellent investment for you and your kitchen.
I hate people who bad mouth things they think are "foodie snob" products when they have not tried the product themselves.

Pumpkin: *Way* or *No Way*
Way! Love pumpkin in pretty much any form. And not that I dislike pumpkin pie, but there are other way yummier pumpkin desserts to be had - pumpkin roll with the cream cheese filling, pumpkin cheesecake, etc.

@cybercita ~ thanks so much for posting this. I'll take a wild guess that 2 cups of vegetable oil is a typo?
@angelfood ~ my hands-down favorite ice cream is pumpkin and I didn't have a recipe, even though I own an ice cream maker. Thanks for sharing.
Tip: If you have an ice cream maker like mine where you store the cylinder in the freezer ~ it makes a perfect wine/champagne chiller for the larger bottles. So yes Alton, it does multiple tasks.
That's Nuts: Torrone, the Italian Nougat Confection
Though zeppoles were the top favorite, Torrone was my second favorite Feast Food. On 18th Avenue in Bensonhurst, there would be booth after booth of incredible treats. The Torrone booth was usually set up in front of one of the cafes and the table would be lined from one end to the other with tons irregularly shaped pieces hacked off a ginormous block of it. The smaller pieces were soft because of the summer heat but the larger pieces remained solid and crunchy.
Definitely a bonus was the thin layer of "communion host" stuck to the top and bottom of each long plank of the stuff when it's purchased pre-packaged.
Pumpkin: *Way* or *No Way*
here is the cake recipe as i got it originally. i up the spices considerably, using about a tablespoon each of the cinnamon and nutmeg, and two teaspoons of cloves. i also use a teaspoon of cardamom and include a thumbs worth of fresh ginger as well. it can be frosted with an orange glaze -- orange zest, juice, butter, and confectioner's sugar -- frosted with cream cheese frosting, or left plain.
it's a dump cake -- just dump all of the ingredients into a big bowl and beat.
pumpkin spice cake
3 c flour
2c sugar
1 t salt
1 t baking soda
1/2 t baking powder
2 t cinnamon
1 t ground ginger
1 t freshly ground nutmeg
1 t ground cloves
2 c vegetable oil
1 15 oz can pumpkin
4 eggs
combine all ingredients in a large bowl and beat at medium speed for 4 minutes. pour into greased and floured 12 cup bundt pan. bake at 325 for 1 hour or until done {there should not be any wet spots under the top cracks and a tester should come out clean}.
cool 20 min and turn out on rack.
Pumpkin: *Way* or *No Way*
WAY in a big way but not the canned stuff. Use sweet potatoes instead. Or better yet, grow your own sugar pumpkins or kabocha squash, hopi blue or other heirloom varieties until you find the one you like best. They are easy to grow and so easy to cook and freeze. New rules against canning it so can't recommend that. I made this years pie with kabocha. I'm having a slice right now for breakfast and nibbling candied pecans on the side. Whole Foods sells them and farmer's markets have them. I use them in everything both sweet and savory. Old Uncle Gaylord's recipe for pumpkin raisin ice cream is divine! Safer to make cooked custard than use raw egg though.
PUMPKIN RAISIN ICE CREAM
4 cups half&half
1egg
2/3 cup sugar
3/4 cup pumpkin
1/4 teaspoon each: salt, nutmeg, ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup golden raisins (you could soak them in rum or brandy)
Mix, chill, freeze in machine
That's Nuts: Torrone, the Italian Nougat Confection
Torrone is definitely up there. Pine nut brittle; also a special sweet made of carmelized milk and ground cashews.

@Monelle ~ Supermarket pumpkin pie? No comparison. It's like comparing apples and gym socks!
@bareneed ~ I've missed SE and YOU as well. Been a rough year, and I'm glad to be back.
@cybercita ~ Please post your bundt cake recipe?
I'd say the majority do like pumpkin, sweet and savory. I have made sweet potato pie and nobody knew the difference, so I'd substitute that in a New York minute if I couldn't find canned pumpkin. Anyone care to share more savory recipes, like cream of pumpkin soup?
Pumpkin: *Way* or *No Way*
Waaaaaaaaaaaay! How do I love thee, pumpkin... let me count the ways...
Surprisingly, I didn't even taste anything pumpkin till I was a teenager. Everyone in my family didn't like it and had me brainwashed until I felt obliged to take a little bite of a pie that was pressed upon me by a good friend's mother. It was love ever since, in a multitude of permutations. And it couldn't be Thanksgiving without it. My family eats the pecan pie and brownies while everyone else gobbles up the pumpkin stuff.
That's Nuts: Torrone, the Italian Nougat Confection
My favorite candy of all time has to be Gaz, or Persian nougat. The fluffy white nougat is perfumed with rosewater and cheery green pistacios studded throughout. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaz_%28candy%29
Though my husband thinks it tastes like soap. Rosewater is very polarizing.
That's Nuts: Torrone, the Italian Nougat Confection
That's a photo of heaven, right there. Despite my lack of religion, if I died and went there, amazing.
That's Nuts: Torrone, the Italian Nougat Confection
Love, love, love Torrone. Nothing compares. I've been known to order it from various importers when I need my fix. Anyone have a favorite importer?

Pumpkin: *Way* or *No Way*
Big way - It is great to see you posting here again - I have missed you! I just never got the hang of Facebook and I like hanging out here.
Pumpkin: *Way* or *No Way*
today I made a big mistake and tasted pumpkin pie being sampled at one of our supermarkets - now I know why so many people do not like pumpkin pie-
it was thick, starchy, tasteless, totally without flavor, like nothing I have tasted before.
As far as canned pumpkin shortage, Whole Foods in Raleigh was stacked floor to ceiling with their 365 brand and at Harris Teeter there was a good supply of Libby 100% pumpkin as well as pumpkin pie mix -

Cook the Book: 'Simple Fresh Southern'
I have made my great grandmother's carrot and zucchini o-shaped loaf for my in-laws for the past three years. I surround the loaf with and put in the middle tons of roasted broccoli - definitely a crowd pleaser, as it goes fantastic with the turkey and mashed potatoes and all the other classic sides!
Pumpkin: *Way* or *No Way*
NO WAY! Unfortunately, pumpkin pie or any kind of pumpkin recipe has never made it on our table because my family just doesn't like the taste of it.
We prefer sweet potato pie for dessert or a sweet potato casserole during dinner. It tastes MUCH better than pumpkin and my family agrees!
