Need help picking a US foodie travel destination!
Oh, San Francisco would be a great call too, of course.

New York City is the way to go, esp if you've never been. I don't know about that Seattle recommendation, while it's a very pretty city, it's also very small and as a single guy traveling solo, I think you might find it a bit limited (though you could pop up to Vancouver too, which is an amazing place). New Orleans is a good call too.
'F*** Yeah, Cilantro'
Dislike of cilantro, where it tastes like soap, is actually genetic. That's why people tend to either love or hate it (happily, I love it).

Learning to Make Good Coffee, Suggestions?
Not to depress you but I had the same romantic dream and then I read:

Should definitely read that as you consider opening a cafe.

Sadly I have to disagree. They DO make some of the best wonton soup in the neighborhood. but the rest of it as inconsistent and often downright bad. Very much a 'gloopy' corner chinese. we order from there now and then only because of the wonton soup and have yet to find other consistently good things to order. The double cooked pork was bad last time (though I used to like it) and even their lo mein left something to be desired.
Pepsi to Use Real Sugar in 'Pepsi Throwback' and 'Mountain Dew Throwback' in April
Maybe the limited offer is a test to see if people will buy it before rolling out a premium line? Too bad its not coke, I prefer it and mexican coca-cola is sooo much better than the stuff here.
What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?
Fresh pizza dough
Honey yogurt
Par baked baguettes
Cuban canned black beans
Jarred red curry sauce
Steak asada
Almond crunch granola and cereal
Boxed turkey gravy (in a pinch)
He said, 'Broccoli is the anchovy of vegetables'
Anise. It's about the only thing I absolutely cannot tolerate any of whatsoever. Means I'm not too keen on fennel either.
Indoor Grilling: Korean-Style Steaks with Spicy Cilantro Sauce
I've been using this Gourmet recipe for ages now, it's really delicious. I like to heat up the sauce that you put on top.
Barbecue: Mustard-Whiskey-Glazed Ham
I'm going to try this today for Xmas. How long do you think it will take in an oven Josh as opposed to the smoker?
Serious Eats City Guide Premiere: New York (How to Leave Here Pleasantly Full)
Jing Fong is the dim sum spot I referred to btw...20 Elizabeth Street
Serious Eats City Guide Premiere: New York (How to Leave Here Pleasantly Full)
Chinatown Brasserie for dim sum? Good lord why, when you're that close to chinatown? I went once with a big group and had a nice enough time but there was nothing exceptional about it (other than perhaps how exceptionally empty the dining room was that day...though that suited us fine with the big group we had). But far far better dim sum to be had a reasonably short walk away in Chinatown at numerous places. My personal favorite being the one whose name I rarely remember on Elizabeth St., just south of Canal, up the big elevator to a huge room that my husband likes to think reminds him of a massive Denny's for the Chinese (though more adequately compared to crashing a Chinese wedding). THAT is real dim sum. Not the sterile stuff at Chinatown Brasserie. Cheaper too :)
'Dinner Impossible' Premieres Tonight with Host Michael Symon
Am I missing something on that blog? Where's the 'come clean' bit?
Essentials: Salad With Tomatoes and Grilled Bread (Not Day Old Bread)
Try adding some thinly sliced red onion and swap the 'red wine vinegar' for balsamic :) Great dish with the jersey tomatoes in season at the moment.

Our local Publix tells me that Pepsi Throwback will soon be off the shelves, being only a summer item. Is that true?
What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?
Is the Pomegranate Glaze really discontinued? My mom tried to buy it in Atlanta but they didn't have it. Can it be found elsewhere???
Learning to Make Good Coffee, Suggestions?
Have you tried cold-brewing coffee? It's much better than just cooling hot coffee...much more flavorful. The NY Times did an article on it a while ago, but I found it through Smitten Kitchen's post: http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/08/cold-brewed-iced-coffee/
Sooo easy and so good!

wow, guys, thanks so much for the advice!

i love adding cinnamon into my coffee grounds - just adds a really nice flavor.

There are some newer good shops in Boston. Absolute top notch are Simon's in Cambridge simonscoffeeshop.com and Fixe in Brookline cafefixe.com - they are both very, very serious about coffee. For a local roaster who has his own shop and has begun to distribute, check out http://www.barismo.com/blog/, owner is Jamie.

One thing to keep in mind, if you're using flavored syrups for your coffee, make sure to get a good brand, and make sure that you throw them away after they've been opened for more than a month! I've had some awesome lattes and mochas that have been ruined by rancid syrup: tasted like spray paint. This has always been at smaller coffee shops, who try to stretch their syrups too far.

One factor others haven't mentioned - filtered water. Get as much of the polutants out [and every city has a different mix of minerals and stuff] and you'll get a better product down the line.

Pepsi to Use Real Sugar in 'Pepsi Throwback' and 'Mountain Dew Throwback' in April
Something I forgot to say (>.
The change from saying "Sugar" on the label to "Sucrose" is probably due to a recent change in regulations that states that the manufacturers have to use the scientific name for the ingredient. Drinks with added vitamins have ingredient lists that look horrifying until you look them up and discover that it's just the vitamins. :)
here's a list of common vitamins if anyone's interested

Sucrose or table sugar is obtained from sugar cane or sugar beets.
Sucrose IS real sugar :) heh.
"Sucrose is made from glucose and fructose units: Sucrose or table sugar is obtained from sugar cane or sugar beets." - www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembook/546sucrose.html
I know a lot of people that travel to mexico regularly, some of whom lived there for many years. Everyone always says mexican coke is better, now i know why.
So that awful nasty taste in coke and pepsi is the sweetener? =/ Eweh.. The only soda i really like is Root Beer...
Looks like I missed my chance to try this throwback stuff but I'm not sure I really care that I don't like soda :) Better for my bones and fat cells. Hehe.
What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?
My top 5:
Chicken egg rolls
Frozen Naan
All of the curry sauces are amazing
Peanut butter pretzels
Booze, especially the Hofbrau
After reading this, I need to try that pumpkin butter.
Pepsi to Use Real Sugar in 'Pepsi Throwback' and 'Mountain Dew Throwback' in April
Are they REALLY stopping the Throwback sodas on June 13? Are they crazy? BTW be VERY wary of Passover Coke. For the past two years they have NOT used sugar - they have used SUCROSE. They simply will do whatever they can to avoide spending any extra money on sugar. They stink.
What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?
To the Columbia Mo crowd, I am the one who drove 100 miles to St. Louis to get the Blackberry Tea! Columbia is now so large, we could support a TJs if they would put one there!
What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?
I drove 100 miles to the closest Trader Joes to me just to purchase their Blackberry Infusion tea and they NO LONGER CARRY IT!!!!!!!!!!! I could have cried. I am in love with that tea. They told me to try World Market and I found some Blackberry Sage green tea (for 3x the cost of Trader Joes teas) and it was weak and not comparable at all Could someone please tell me where I can find that luscious tea???? Many thanks!

I found the Pepsi singles in the convenience store in our building at 1600 Smith, Houston, Texas.

Has anyone beenable to purchase the throwback. I have tried my local Shoprite and Stop and Shop to no avail. Help I want to try it before the deadline.
'F*** Yeah, Cilantro'
2 places where cilantro rocks: Viet Nam, Mexico.
• I have a VIetnamese restaurant in Chinatown, NYC where, when you order pho, they give you a small plate piled high with fresh cilantro. You can dump some into the pho and let it soak. Or you can dip and chomp.
• Bean burritos -- pinto or black bean -- can be stuffed with a handful of cilantro, and rolled up. The hot tortilla warms the cilantro and brings out its flavor.
Need help picking a US foodie travel destination!
I have made a decision: New Orleans!
The offer from veggieout as well as great suggestions from other users made it tough. When it came down to it, NO provided everything I wanted in this trip and I got a great price. To me, it is such a unique place that also offers great food options.
I definately see myself taking an awesome west coat swing in the future (start in Seattle or Vancouver and eat my way south on the the Pacific Coast -Portland, San Fran, LA, San Diego, etc.). That will have to wait until time and money is a less of an issue. I also want to make my way to NYC, Boston, Miami, Santa Fe, Phoenix, Vegas, Charleston, Memphis, Philly, and many other places in the future.
Thank you to everyone that provided help. I defintately plan on seeking your help when I am planning this trip in the next week or so!

another vote for new orleans.
Need help picking a US foodie travel destination!
Of course, no doubt, The city of Roses, Portland-Oregon.
We have everything from cheap to spendy, it depends on what you like. Here are my favorite:
- Biwa for Japanese ramen and tasty yakitori.
- Wong King's for dim sum.
- Saint cupcake for yummy cupcakes.
- Pok Pok for Thai food chiang mai style
- Junior Ambassadors home made ice cream food cart from asparagus ice cream, bacon maple ice cream to smoked salmon and cream cheese.
- Potato champion food cart for some poutine.
- Sawasdee Thai, the best Thai food cart in Portland.
- Nicholas Lebanese restaurant, cheap, affordable Lebanese food.
- Screen Door for southern food. Fried chicken and sweet potato waffles!
We have so many restaurants and food carts that are so affordable and most of them are organic and using local products. Good luck on finding your destination. There are so many awesome cities and food!
'F*** Yeah, Cilantro'
Cilantro, I could put in under my pillow I love the stuff so much. I want to grow it.

No brainer - San Francisco!
Go to the Chronicle's Food Section (online), and look at articles from the last 1-2 years for restaurants, food markets, diners, ethnic restaurants (amazing chinese food), etc.
The weather is great, and airline and hotel prices are down because of the economy. Plus, in between your meal adventures - you're in San Francisco!
'F*** Yeah, Cilantro'
"I LOVE cilantro, I lost respect for Barefoot Contessa because she expressed her distaste for it. WTF?! This blog rules."
Gargupie, I'm with you. When she tried to make chilli with basil instead of cilantro, I thought she was a serious culinary retard.
'F*** Yeah, Cilantro'
From what I understand, some folks are genetically predisposed to hate Cilantro - it makes it taste like soap or pine-sol to them.
Sucks to be you!
