Tea!

Tea addict here. The very best tea I've found is actually French - Marriage Freres. You can get beautiful cans of it at McNulty's Coffee on Christopher Street (close to Hudson Street). Their Earl Grey French Blue is fantastic and has pretty blue flower petals in it. My all-time afternoon tea is their Grands Augustins, which is light with a bit of citrus. Marco Polo is their big seller, but I find it a bit heavy. Of course, the best way to get this tea is to go for brunch at their tea shop in Paris, but, barring that, try all the flavors you can find here. (I've also seen Marriage Frere's teas at Ballducci's.)

At the other end of the spectrum, in the summer I drink gallons of sweetened iced tea made from grocery store tea bags (classic Lipton, thank you very much), brewed with fresh mint from the Green Market. It is delicious and nicely D'Agostino's-meets-Marrakesh. (Tip - My favorite farmer told me to wrap fresh mint in damp paper towels and sealed in a plastic container. I've had it last for over 2 weeks this way.)

Blue Hill at Stone Barns: The Most Important Restaurant in America

Our dinner at Blue Hill practically ruined us for food everafter. It was a level of freshness, creativity, and wonderful tastes that we've never experienced before. We had mostly the same items listed above, although we had the good sense to mention that we loved butter and hen-of-the-woods mushrooms (hence a butter tasting and This Morning's Egg served with sauteed mushrooms). The wine sommelier was engaging and served us up a phenomenal 2004 Colin-Deleger Premier Cru Chassagne Montrachet. After dinner, they asked us if we would like our dessert outside, which, of course, we did. The floor show from thousands of lightning bugs on the hillside were the perfect ending to a fantastic evening.

About NYCGal

Website:

Location: West Village, New York

About: I spent the first half of my career in international aid. I then joined American Express for 7 fantastic years before setting off to be my own boss last year. I spend most of my free time exploring New York City.

Favorite foods: I'm big on the classics - steak frites, roasted chicken, chocolate cakes, diner breakfasts. I taste test falafel, chicken parm, and carrot cake wherever I go. Sakura Hana on Hudson Street has the best sushi. Period.

Last bite on earth: A lobster claw smothered in drawn butter, followed by the richest yellow cake with the thickest, pinkest American butter cream frosting.
