50+ baked potatoes
My grandma always uses leftover boiled or baked potatoes to make potato cakes. Scoop out the insides (you could chop up the skins too if they're soft) and mix with an egg or two and enough flour to make them hold their shape. Form into patties and fry in some sort of fat (bacon grease, lard, oil, or butter). Season with salt and pepper. Delicious!

Sunday Brunch: Louisville Hot Brown Sandwich
As a Louisvillian, I must point out that Louisville Hot Browns do *not* have mushrooms. The dish should be topped with a slice of tomato.
And that whole toast-bracketing thing, well, I've never seen that done, either.

Should Junk Food Help Pay for Health Care?
Both of these options are bad. I agree with emgroff:
"...taxing based on BMI is ridiculous not only because BMI is a flawed indicator but also because genetics plays a significant role in weigh."
Taxing junk food (or sodas or fast food or whatever) is a terrible idea because there are too many people who would justify buying junk food with the excuse that their purchase is helping pay for others' health care (like the people who purposefully litter in stadiums so that the custodians will have a job to do...).
Serious Green: How to Get Free Fruit via Urban Fruit Harvesting
@impeh- I took it to mean "Ask first or leave a note on a door with your contact information"... if no one is there to ask and then wait for them to contact you before harvesting.
Freezing Eggs
I froze whole eggs once on accident - I was in a foreign country and didn't know which symbol on the fridge to turn the knob toward and ended up making the fridge into a big freezer.
The eggshells cracked, but the inner membrane did not. I was planning to boil them anyway, and they worked just fine.
"dinner" vs "supper"
I grew up with the definition: lunch is at noon, supper is in the evening, and dinner is any meal that you eat on a holiday (Thanksgiving Dinner, etc).
Threadless T-Shirt Giveaway: Lemon Aid
First make simple syrup: Heat one part sugar and one part water in a pot on the stove over low heat until the sugar is completely dissolved, stirring often. Cool completely and store leftovers in a tightly lidded jar in the fridge.
Second juice the lemons: Start with warm (unrefrigerated) lemons. Give them a firm roll on the counter to break up some of the membranes inside. Cut each lemon in half along the equator and juice with a juicer or a fork. Strain lemon juice if you don't care for pulp.
Third mix to taste: Fill a pitcher 1/2 full of water and add lemon juice and simple syrup to taste. Make this mixture a bit strong as it will be watered down by ice soon. Fill pitcher the rest of the way with ice. Stir. Pour into glasses and serve.

In Videos: The Donut Man
Yesss!
I was in a Donut Man musical at my church when I was a teen. All the little kids did most of the acting and singing. I got to play Duncan the Donut himself!
I had a sore throat by the end of it from talking in a little squeaky voice and a sore arm from the puppetry. The hardest part was the one song I had to sing solo in the Duncan voice, about being tiny like a mustard seed.
Cook the Book: 'The Asian Grill'
My biggest mishap is generally not being able to light the grill...
So I bought a cast iron grill pan to use inside on the stove, and even though I seasoned it properly and oil it every time I use it, everything sticks to it and makes my house all smoky...
Serious Cocktails: Drinking Without Drinking
Equal parts orange juice, pineapple juice, and cranberry juice. Shake together and pour over ice. Add a splash of clear soda if you like it fizzy.
I started making this concoction as a kid, when I didn't care for any of those juices separately. The combination is not-too-sweet and really refreshing!

Food "gifts." Is this tacky?
I'd have to agree with HeartofGlass - I would be put off by being asked to bring my own container. If this is truly a gift, you should bottle it yourself and give it out freely. Go here for good, cheap bottles in various shapes and sizes:
http://www.specialtybottle.com/
Look under Glass Bottles -> Sauce Bottles.
No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?
The man is quite old enough to decide what food he likes or doesn't like. Doesn't he have enough stress without being forced to eat food he doesn't care for? Nothing is stopping *you* from planting them in *your own* garden...

Pizzeria Delfina's Genius Anti-Yelp T-Shirts
I agree with eleeb. The comparison to Take Back the Night is wildly inappropriate. Do Serious Eaters need sensitivity training?
Blogwatch: Chocolate Pasta
NAY!
Growing up, I loved cooking and my goal in life was to have my very own tv cooking show (that was way before Food Network, when the only cooking shows were on PBS). I would always request kitchen gadgets for holiday gifts. Mom bought me a Ronco pasta extruder for Christmas one year. It came with a recipe for chocolate pasta. I made it once. Once was too many times...

Le Creuset: Is it worth it?
Go for Lodge brand enameled cast iron. Great quality at a much lower price point.
I don't have a ___ in my kitchen and I don't want one.
I really want the onion goggles but I refuse to own them because they're *beyond* dorky. After I got laser eye surgery, my eyes became extremely sensitive. I can only chop about half an onion before my eyes are burning so badly I have to walk away.
Should I keep expired flour?
Make salt dough. Much easier than the cooked dough, and great for leaving the creations out to dry. Make little sculptures or ornaments (a little late for Christmas, I know, but maybe you could make heart-shaped ones for Valentines or egg-shaped ones for Easter, etc...)
Mix 2 cups flour with 1 cup salt and just enough water to bring them together into a ball. That's it!
"dinner" vs "supper"
I think it depends on what's served. We have "chicken dinner," "lasagna dinner," "steak dinner," "breakfast for dinner," "chili supper," spaghetti supper," "soup and salad supper." "Lasagna supper" just doesn't sound right.
"dinner" vs "supper"
I have lived in Missouri (St. Louis) all my life. We always called the second meal of the day "Lunch", and the last meal of the day, "Supper". Although Dinner and Supper could be used interchangeably My husband's family did the same thing.. I notice my older siblings are now calling it "dinner" when they invite us over. I have always used the word Supper unless we are going out to a formal meal, then I will call it Dinner.
We have always used the word soda. My uncle used to call it sodie.

homemade soups, starting with meat bones and ending with seasonal vegetables....the best! takes hours to simmer on the stove...but the end results are used in so many meals...the simplest being laddled into a big bowl and with a crusty bread on the side.

My Momma liked to make big ol pots of soups and stews. All us kids and our kids would come over and eat. Sometimes she'd be creative and add different things. My Daddy would smell it and come in and ask what she was cooking. She would tell him she was making "stuff". It was funny. She was a great cook.

I love to make a Korean soup made with fresh chicken cooked in water and spiced with plenty of grated fresh ginger. The chicken is shredded, and a cup or two of cooked rice is added to the broth and cooked until the soup has the consistency of "chowder." Serve in Oriental bowls and garnished with sliced green onions and Korean sesame salt. Delish, and very healing if you are suffering from respiratory "flu."

Cook the Book: 'Japanese Hot Pots'
A nice, warm bowl of beef or chicken curry (Japanese-style) cooked with just the right amount of veggies. It's not quite soup but I purposely thin it out so that it has that soupy feel to it. Warms you up and sticks with you all day plus leaves your house smelling wonderful for days. :)
