First time to AustinTX....need help planning a culinary vacation

-taco express does a gospel brunch/hippie church on sundays, live music and a crowd, 12 - 2pm, and they have great, cheap, tacos and horchata. it's on south lamar.
-east side cafe on manor road uses veggies from their own garden.
-a lot of people like salt lick or county line for bbq.
-torchy's and el chilito both have great tacos.
-thai passion is a good thai place downtown off congress. I also like titaya's on lamar.
-hut's hamburgers on 6th is a fun classic burger joint with shakes, fries, etc.
-some pricier/nicer options: jeffrey's has been around in austin forever. zoot and wink are good too.
-places for beer: dog and duck pub on guadalupe, opal divine's on 6th, draughthouse on burnet, and crown and anchor (good burgers) on san jacinto.
-daily juice has awesome juices and smoothies.
-for great pastries (austin doesn't have a lot of these, sadly), go to uppercrust bakery on burnet or sweetish hill on west 6th.

most of these are local restaurants or local chains :)

Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds: The True Champion of Breakfast Cereals?

yes, cracklin oat bran! crunchy or soggy, it was my favorite cereal as a kid. better than fruit loops.

Serious Green: 10 Cheap & Green Kitchen Tips

I usually wash my dishes in a dirty pot or dirty (large) mixing bowl, and it really does save a lot of water. I haven't had a dishwasher in a few years ("efficiency" apartment living), and boy, I really REALLY miss it sometimes. I cook almost every meal and eat at home frequently, so they pile up quickly.

Cook the Book: '660 Curries' by Raghavan Iyer

my mother took an Indian cooking class when I was about twelve. she tested out several recipes on us, and my favorite by a long shot was the curried dal. not sure what the name of the dish was, but it was creamy, spicy, and had that earthy flavor of lentils that I just love.

Dinner Tonight: Lime Soup (Sopa de Lima)

Made this last night. The BF and I loved it! Very easy, very tasty. I really loved the addition of the cinnamon and cloves, something I never would have thought to include.

Serious Efforts: Homemade Ice Cream (including Lactose-free)

I make dairy-free ice cream quite often in my ice cream maker. I use soy creamer (the Silk brand is the only one I've seen at the store) as a replacement for milk, and I haven't had a problem yet with this substitute in any recipe I've tried. if you sub regular soy milk (or rice milk, etc), it tends to be too watery. but the soy creamer has plenty of fat and works very well. good luck!

so many disasters - the most recent was an ice cream pie. I decided to make the ice cream, caramel sauce, crust, everything myself. And the recipe instructed me to "drizzle" the peanut butter. It was clumpy and sticky, and even melted and refrozen as ice cream it was nasty.

mmm...the best dark chocolate, something around 70-85%. I'm sure I haven't had the good fortune yet to taste the best, so I can't specify which brand/manufacturer. I want to remember that flavor!

it's actually kind of sad. My freshman year of college I worked at the corporate HQ of Fanny Farmer candy shops and for our Xmas bonus we all got a copy of the new Fanny Farmer cookbook ..... so my first cookbook was the Fanny Farmer cookbook.

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

My first cookbook was one from our church. I know, not top quality. I rarely turn to cookbooks as a new cook because of the vast information on the internet. I would enjoy having a few cookbooks in my collection, though.

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

My Mother in Law got me a 5 ingredient cookbook that had horrible recipes which basically combined 5 canned foods into one dish meals. Revolting.

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

The first cookbook that I ever received was a book of photocopied recipes my grandfather made for me of all the traditional Italian recipes that my great grandma used to make for her family. There are some wonderful recipes in there too. From homemade tortellini, to antipasto that has to sit jarred for a year before you can eat it (to let the flavors meld).

The sad bit is that I rarely use it because so many of the recipes are so labor intensive and large.

My first cookbook was the Company's Coming Kids Cooking cookbook - Company's Coming is really big where I'm from (Alberta, Canada), but even when I venture to another province, no one's heard of it! I don't think I made too much from it... there was a pretty good fudgesicle recipe though :)

We had the Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book growing. Plus a binder with tons of 3x5 cards neatly written by my mother and grandmother. My favorite was cooking from recipes on my mom's index cards.

There was pretty much only one cookbook in the house growing up in my Chinese household (which my mother never cracked open) and it was the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. The first recipe I ever made was probably tuna casserole one Thanksgiving when my sisters and I decided to do as the Americans do and add to our standard hot pot feast. How things have changed!

Unfortunately, I can not remember the name of the Cook Book Given. But I do know who gave it to me. My Aunt Sandra gave me the cook book for my Baby shower 24 years ago. She wished me a long and happy life. Aunt Sandra died 4 years ago..and although I cannot find the cookbook through many moves I do treasure the sentiment
