Serious Eats Staff Picks: Favorite Chocolate Candy Bars

I live in Germany and absolutely Ritter Sport is my favorite....there is a kind here with caramel and hazelnut nougat this is to die for. I had no idea they had them in the States, it was great source of anxiety to me when thinking of moving back haha. So happy to know they have them in the US!! The mint ones are pretty awesome too.

C is for Christmas Cookie!

Definitely Cocoa Crinkle cookies (just finished making those) and every single year we have to have the ones my mom makes - soft almond flavored cookies with red and green maraschino cherries dropped in the center. Love them!

What's your favorite food when drunk?

Doner Kebap! I am convinced this is the worlds best drunk food.

And french fries, definitely. All it takes is one or two drinks and suddenly I want french fries.

But, if I am hungover...then its scramby eggs and homefries and bacon. mmm.

You truly do get what you pay for

Tomatoes - I want fresh, vine ripened tomatoes that are not picked by slave labor in Florida.
Salami
Liquor (beer also - but I live in Germany so, I don't have to splurge to buy beer. Its the best in the world and its dirt.cheap)
Free range eggs
Coffee - must be fair trade AND taste good
Wine - I don't buy extravagant but I will pay a few extra euros for a decent bottle (again, this is also something that just isn't expensive here anyway)
balsamic vinegar
Ice Cream - its got to be worth the calories!
fair trade Sugar and Chocolate
Yogurt

For most things though - whether or not I decide to splurge really depends on what I am using it for. And for many things here in Germany, there just isn't much quality difference in the various products (there isn't much variation in most grocery products at all) so I don't feel like I often have to splurge to get the quality that I insist on.

What is your fantasy food business?

I would start a food label selling my condiments - bbq sauces and salsas. I have already been contemplating starting selling these at the farmers markets next summer.

I have also always fantasized about having a sandwich shop/deli in a college town featuring lots of uniquely awesome sandwiches, salads, soup of the day, good coffee, and crazy good iced teas. have a cool cafe with internet access, display local art, play cool music.

That or a gelato shop. Seems like anyone who has this idea should totally do it because there could never be too many gelato shops :)

Money Saving Tips On Food

The one thing I haven't seen a suggestion for is making your a lot of your condiments from scratch - salad dressings, bbq sauce, pickles, jam, salsa, mayo etc Of course they taste better that way too.

Eat a plant based diet - really. In season vegetables are so cheap - you don't need to buy much of them for most recipes. I just buy whatever is in season/on sale and make a dish based on that. I recently made a zucchini gratin that fed us for 3 or 4 meals (2 people) with one single zucchini and about about 6 potatoes.

Oh and other than beans and rice - eat lentils! They are so so cheap :)

What do you miss? (to: expats and others!)

I am an American (from Texas-Arizona-SoCal) living in Berlin, and while you can get lots of great food here, I would kill for:

Real Mexican food. omg I am dying for a fish taco or a bowl of Posole ...or a Torta from Rancho Mercado in Phoenix...even just some fresh corn tortillas would be heaven.

A decent Burger (they use beef mixed with pork most places here its drives me mad). Mostly I crave In N Out.

Diet Dr. Pepper

A decent cut of beef. I am not even a big meat eater but they cut the beef differently here and its all super tough.

Beans other than Kidney. I actually bring black, pinto, and red beans in my suitcase back with me from the states.

When I leave, I will miss:
the beer, the bakeries, and all the Turkish restaurants.
