Best Banh Mi in NYC

Paris bakery, the most authentic? I like them but were talking the Subway of Banh Mi......Case in point, look closely at the menu, Buffalo Chicken and Tuna Salad banh mi???? I don't see any of those offered in Saigon, also they don't actually BBQ the meat there. Not trying to start a banh mi war but I find SVS and even Sau Voi to be the most authentic.

Oh and finally the iced Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk is so much better almost everywhere.

I'll co-sign that. I think it's much better than the highly overrated jewelry store around the corner. Baoguette's isn't bad but I think SVS and Nicky's make the two best. You can check out a pic on my blog

yeah, I'm finding it hard to believe. Every Meyer restaurant I've been to has been top notch, EMP and Tabla especially. And sometimes instead of dressing up, I'll just throw on True Religions, Nike Dunks and t-shirts or polos. Again, I've never had bad service in any of the many Meyer restaurants that I've been to.....sounds like some player hating going on.

It really is I had an amazing meal there around Christmas 07.' An awesome piece of steak with bone marrow crust, a lobster winter stew with a hot mace broth poured over the shelled meat at the table, a peanut butter and chocolate tart with sea salt and olive oil, complimentery candy and amuse bouche, great cocktails and an amazing bottle of barolo, the service was five stars and the food was awesome.

From Talk

Is Ketel One considered a premium vodka?

it is a premium vodka and anyone that sneers at you for ordering it, is a foolish fool. The definition of vodka is a colorless, odorless, tasteless spirit. The premiums go through more filtering than the cheaper vodkas so they taste cleaner and purer, but the taste profiles are not much different at all and all quality vodkas are virtually identical. Why anyone would drink straight vodka, I have no idea but once you make that decision the brands should not be in question,

I'm co-signing with Kathyrn unless you have a very specific beef with ownership that you are willing to "air-out' (that is you can vouch for, not second hand information) you shouldn't go around writing things you "hear" that can impact a business, you would not like it if someone did that to you. since you decided to be so "honest" I'll do the same in that spirit....

I usually do post my blog when I comment which is rare (I only speak when I feel I have a vaild opinion) but when I do, it usually relates to something on my blog, so I know you're not targeting me, however....

How can you be annoyed that someone tries to further themselves and perhaps a business they are trying to start by promoting it? Maybe someone on here goes to the site and tells their friend about it who tells their friend, who wants to advertise on their site? That should be stopped because it annoys you, or your eyes can't tolerate looking it? No one's spamming you, no one's forcing you to go to their blog.

I have an idea, start your own food website where this is not allowed....Remember though, don't advertise it anywhere, you wouldn't want traffic, right?

If you're looking for Italian, Babbo is very romantic but a pain in the ass to get a reservation, Peasent is a little easier and at Il Buco you'll fell like you're eating in an Italian couintryside farmhouse.

You can also do Italian/Seafood all at once and visit Batali's Esca which if the outdoor seating is open is very romantic (first dinner with my girlfriend) the tasting menu with the crudo and paired wines is one of the best meals I've ever had in my life

Margarita

This is something I came up with at a cocktail tasting is different and works really well, it's called a Nueva Maergarita

2 ounces really good silver tequila (I recommend Patron but Sauza works as well)

1 ounce of freshly squeezed blood orange juice

1/2 ounce of falernum (Velvet is now readily available)

shake with ice and strain into margarita glass and for each guest flame a blood orange peel above each drink and drop in (this adds a wonderful smokey orange flavor, which plays great with the tequila and falernum)

enjoy!

Inca Coke or Mexican Coke: Have you seen it?

We recently found Mexican coke at Wegman's. Snagged a few bottles, because we refuse to drink the HFCS stuff. The coke with real cane sugar tastes much better :)

From Talk

Inca Coke or Mexican Coke: Have you seen it?

My local HEB in Texas stocks imported Coke from Mexico. It really does taste better. I don't know why, I will not pretent to know if it is healthier. But, when I'm at the grocery and I see someone about to buy Coke, I point them at the import Coke. Yep, I'm a Coke sniper :) I can't tell you it tastes fresh and spicy and have you beleive me on my word. You must try. It costs more, but it tastes better. I'd rather pay extra for something I enjoy than anything for something sub-par. I have extra seats on the bandwagon :) Aside: Poster from Canada, skip the Coke, just send REAL maple syrup. Canada seems to be the only place selling something other than that chemical crud on almost every shelf.

Bitter(s) in New York

I was on the same seemingly endless search. Liquor stores can't sell them because they are considered to be a food item. I think that most 'everyday' consumers don't really look for bitters so they are generally sold wholesale to bars, etc...

It's been over a year but if you are still looking, look at boutique specialty food stores (dean and deluca won't have them, and even if they do their selection will be minimal). Kalustyan's on 28th and Lex has them. It's a South Asian specialty food store.

Best Banh Mi in NYC

If you're going to go to SVS (Banh Mi So 1) take a 2 min walk and get Paris Bakery and Banh Mi Saigon. They are both a block away and do a taste test.

Of those three, Paris Bakery is probably the most authentic. Banh Mi Saigon is a hit or miss depending on how hard the bread it. SVS is the best value and largest sized sandwich. Overall very decent.

Nicky's is a tiny sandwich and although it has a good taste it's overrated. I liked Baoguette because it's the closest to Ba Xuyen without the trip to Brooklyn.

at 4$ each you might as week get a few from a few different places. share with friends and decide which is the best.

From Talk

Best Banh Mi in NYC

My favorite was a chau deli, which is now closed. Therefore, chalk up one more vote for Banh Mi So #1 (which seems to be what people are referring to as SVS?) on Broome. If you specifically want a barbecue pork banh mi, Banh Mi Saigon on Mott (the one in the jewelry store) is really good.

i haven't been to any of the places in brooklyn.

Baoguette and Nicky's are both fine, but are overpriced; nicky's in particular is not as good as the ones in chinatown. Baogutte specializes in a "sloppy joe" banh mi which is pretty lame, but the assorted-pork-product sandwich is pretty good.

From Talk

Best Banh Mi in NYC

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Seems like SVS and Nicky's are the two that everyone's telling me to try.

Let me know if you think of any other places.

From Talk

Best Banh Mi in NYC

I agree with @sailordave that Saigon's on Broome makes the best banh mi. I always get a #1 with fresh jalapeno and chili sauce. I've tried other places (including Nicky's and Baoguette) and think that both flavor and price is superior at Saigon.

From Talk

Best Banh Mi in NYC

I've had Baoguette. It was nice, but didn't taste very authentic to me. There was just something... missing. Also, it was expensive. Banh mi should never cost that much. Sorry.
Also, did anyone else notice that the NOSH NOSH ratings are based off of 4 reviews.... three of which are from the same person.... That's not a statistically significant sample size.

From Talk

Best Banh Mi in NYC

I have to chime in here.

I like both Baoguette and Ba Xuyen. Never had An Choi so I can't comment there. I have however tried Banh mi Saigon, Banh mi so mot, SVS, and Nicky's (both Manhattan and Brooklyn) as well as several other Banh mi shops. Some might say I'm obsessed with Banh Mi.

I'd rate Ba Xuyen higher than all I've had in NY with Baoguette coming in a very close second. The major difference is that Baoguette has a smaller sandwich and a little less flavor (not necessarily in a bad way). They use Sriracha unlike other places that use peppers for the heat. Ba Xuyen uses Maggi sauce which explains why I use the bread to sop up all the juices left over when I'm nearly done with the sandwich.

One thing to note is that if you are adverse to MSG then you may not like how you feel after Ba Xuyen.

I live in Queens and work in downtown Manhattan. If I'm already in the city I'd get Baoguette over any other place. If I'm not in Manhattan I'd rather make the trek to go to Brooklyn to get Ba Xuyen. I've been known to drive from Queens to Brooklyn to pick up Banh mi from Ba Xuyen.

Now that you mention An Choi, I've heard a good deal so it's next on my list.

good luck and happy hunting.

laurelie - i have had inconsistent danny meyer service experiences as well so i hear you. i know he is famous for hospitality, but i've never found service to be consistently good at his restaurants. given that hospitality is danny meyer's self-proclaimed focus, i'm usually disapointed.

From Talk

Went last Saturday night .It was an abousolutely orgasmic experience. Definitely worth 4 stars.

From Talk

Eleven Madison Park

Laurelie, if you were 22 at the time that you went to EMP, I'm not surprised that they carded you. And I'm surprised you've never been carded anywhere else in the city. I'm 33 and I still get carded from time to time. It's NYC law to card anyone younger than 40. I'm not trying to blame you, but if you got very defensive when asked for ID, that may have tainted the way you experienced the rest of the evening.

As for my own experience with EMP, my fiancee and I are getting married later this year and our plan is to hold a very intimate dinner for family and friends in one of the private dining areas of a 4 star resturant. As part of our research, we had dinner at each 4 star (and 4-star level) resturant in the city in very quick succession - Per Se, Daniel, Le Bernardin et. al - and also had a viewing of each private dining room. EMP ended up blowing away the competition. Besides having the most stunning and beautiful private dining space (Per Se's is a little windowless, shoebox of a space - what's the point of being in the Time Warner Building?), the food was exceptional (way more fun and accessible than Daniel's while still feeling decadent), the service impeccable, and the atmosphere a nice balance of attentiveness and casualness.

The portions may be smaller than what most American's are accustomed to but given how many appetizers and other items you recieve inbetween the three courses, one cannot possibly leave hungry. Our meal consisted of:
- 5 small appetizers (including foie gras, sweetbreads, and a radish dipped in butter)
- a dozen cheese puffs (yum)
- amuse bouche of microgastronomy "tomato & mozzarella" - SO GOOD
- 2nd amuse bouche of lobster bisque
- assortment of bread (try the lemon thyme) with two kinds of butter - cow and goat
- our appetizers (course 1 - we had the gnocchi & shrimp roll)
- our main course (course 2 - suckling pig & halibut)
- a palette cleanser (a strawberry whipped thing)
- our desserts (course 3 - chocolate peanut butter palatte & cherry "cobbler")
- gratis mini-macaroons (as many as you want)
- gratis cognac (I don't drink but my fiancee said it was very good) - and they left the whole bottle to allow us to linger

Plus we got a small box of fruit pate when we left. All this for far less than what we paid at Daniel or Per Se. And Chef Humm visited our table towards the end of dinner to see how we were doing.

It was such a magical experience. I was thrilled to see EMP receive 4 stars this past week. So deserved.

From Talk

Eleven Madison Park

I didn't do anything about it because I was 22 years old and was just really embarrassed and angry - we kind of just slunk out of the place with our heads down. I didn't (still don't) know what I would have done, other than just not going back. And it's not that we didn't look like we were serious diners (not that it matters); we got really dressed up (me in a cocktail dress and pearls and my bf in a nice suit), we are really polite and well mannered people who give others the benefit of the doubt, and we had never been treated like that before, so we were really just humbled because we were made to feel like we didn't belong there and we had been so excited about the dinner. It was for our anniversary dinner and I had begged the bf to take me there, so it really just put a cloud over the whole evening.
I'm NOT trying to hate on the restaurant at all, but did want to share my experience, as this is a board that is open to comments, both positive and negative. I'm totally open to going to other Meyer restaurants and wish that I had not had that experience since I know Meyer is known for his good management and service.
@Mheusler - just because you have never experienced bad service doesn't mean that it's not possible or that I did not experience it. I really do attribute it to my young age and maybe the sommelier was just a black swan in Meyer's gaggle of well trained servers. It does happen you know. I don't care if you don't believe me because it really only matters what your experiences are. Mine were bad and so I will not go back. End of story.

From Talk

Eleven Madison Park

Laurelle's comments are astounding. I've never heard of such behavior from staff at a Meyer restaurant. Did you do anything about it?

From Talk

Eleven Madison Park

I went back in the summer of 2006 and while the food was very good, the portions were insultingly small and the service was rude and snooty. I've been to many a fine dining establishment, so I feel like I'm being fair in my opinion here. The sommelier requested ID from me and my boyfriend and made a big fuss about it such that other diners were staring (we were both over 21), making us feel very self-conscious. Meanwhile I've never been ID-ed in any New York restaurant before (and I went to college here).

Then I requested a glass of Gewurztraminer and the sommelier was very condescending, first telling me that I wouldn't like it (I told her that I knew what it tasted like) and then just refusing to bring it since it didn't go with the dish I had ordered. Instead I got a glass of wine that I didn't want or even like. I'm all for educated suggestions, but really, let the customer order what she wants. The service was really just off-putting - I felt like they were rude to us because we were young. The waiter was rushing us through the courses and really just wasn't very nice - we felt like they were shooting us dirty looks the entire time. The main courses were just too small and we left feeling hungry and humbled. I don't need a Grand Slam size meal, but the serving size was like 1 ounce of protein per person (we did not get the tasting menu either), and when you are paying that much money, you want a bit more food.
I don't think I would go back because I really just have a bad feeling left over from my experience there, and I'd rather spend my money at places where I will be treated more graciously, no matter my age.

From Talk

Eleven Madison Park

I had a sensational Gourmand (11 courses) dinner three weeks ago. I've always liked the regular menu, but after the Gourmand menu, it'll be hard to only have 3 courses. I do want to try again the duck for 2. EMP is now having the duck (and the guinea fowl) carved tableside. Quite an impressive show! Service is top notch and friendly. Nothing stuffy at all about EMP.
