The Cost of a 10-Person Thanksgiving Is $44.61

Yeah, I spent $75 at grocery store last night and have yet to buy the turkey or the wine!

Brooklyn Restaurant Suggestions

Well, Brooklyn is kind of huge so it depends on what you're ding out there.

I live in Williamsburg and two of my favorite places were just voted "Best of" in Zagats. Best BBQ is Fette Sau. Best Burger is DuMont Burger. I would go to either of those before heading all the way out to Coney Island.

Miranda is really good Italian/Spanish food. DOC Wine Bar is rustic sandwich and small plates. Zipe Zape has great tapas and paella and the best sangria. Etc...

Yes. Jim's on South Street is the steak for me too. Geno's and Pat's are bland and overrated.

Nick's Roast Beef or Pork is pretty darn special too!

Thanks! I wanted to make sure it was a GOOD turkey since it's the first year I'll be cooking for my parents.

Does Anyone Still Eat Chicken-Fried Steak?

When I worked at Chilis we had it on the menu. Is it still? I have to say, it wasn't half bad. Not as good as Cowgirls though!

Midtown restaurant for a date?

Oh, La Masseria on 48th is great Italian food and a wonderful wine selection. It might be a little on the pricey side though. It's down the street from the Walter Kerr Theater.

From Talk

Midtown restaurant for a date?

The restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Paramount Hotel is nice and not too expensive. Plus you could have a pre- or post- date drink in their 1st floor bar.

The Russian Tea Room has reopened, no? I can't speak for the quality of their food.

Cafe Un Deux Trois has a pre-theater rush but if you get there past 7:30 it's nice and they put crayons on the table!

Cupcakes: Calories in Disguise

Recipe4Living, they are so much better than Magnolia. I would rate Billy's Bakery and Crumbs as the best cupcakes in the city. And I can eat one in sitting, and then spend the next morning at the gym cursing myself for doing do.

Oh! They also have mini-cupcakes, which are regular size. So you don't have to eat one as big as your head if you don't want to.

Do you eat weekday breakfast? If so, what?

I eat breakfast every morning before heading to the gym and then to the office. What I have varies though; oatmeal with bananas or some other kind of fruit, peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat bread, raisin bran or Go Lean Crunch...And then I have a Cliff protein bar when I get to my desk.

Spagetti and meatballs

To make a quick sauce, I lightly brown chopped onions and garlic in olive oil. To this I add two cans of Whole Tomatos, crushed by hand. Don't empty all of the liquid in the can into this. Season with salt and pepper, basil and parsley. Let it cook down for a few minutes and then add a half can of tomato paste to thicken it the slightest. Cover and simmer, stirring occassionaly.

In a separate pan, I'll brown sweet sausage and hot sausage (uncased and chopped) -- no oil necessary. Once brown, I'll add it to the tomato sauce.

Add in some sicilan olives and cheese and you're good to go in about half an hour.

Free Pizza at Bars: Are We Talkin' Nationwide?

The pizza at Alligator is really good. Plus, they have the arcade game Buck Shot. Nothing better than drinking beer, eating pizza, and shooting animated wildlife.

I hear Capone's has the best pizza but it's kind of scary/dirty looking on the outside so I've always been wary of going in.

However, I don't think this is really a new phenomenon nor reserved for "hipster" bars. I'm so sick of the word "hipster."

Martha Tries Philly Cheesesteak for First Time, Prefers Geno's to Pat's

I ate at Pat's about 2 years ago and was disappointed. My cheese steak was lukewarm because they piled cooked steaks off to the side and used those for the sandwiches instead of giving you a steak hot off the grill. I heard that they were much better years ago.
Never did try Geno's, however, I don't know why those people such as "epices6" find it 'racist' to insist on ordering in English. I thought this was supposed to be America we live in where everyone should learn to speak English! It's because of bleeding heart liberals such as "epices6" that Spanish is on just about every item we purchase. What A Disgrace!!
By far, the best Cheesesteak I had in Philly is at a place around the corner from Pat's and Geno's called Cosmi's Deli. I found out about it from Frommer's or Foder's Philadelphia guide. It was from a local columnist in Philly who had sampled cheese steaks from about 60 different establishments in the Philly area, including Pat's and Geno's, and said that Cosmi was the best he tasted.

The Cost of a 10-Person Thanksgiving Is $44.61

I think if you doubled everything but the turkey you might be credibly representing the cost. But as is: 1 lb. of green beans for 10 people? What is a relish tray of carrots and celery, and how does it cost only 82 cents while simultaneously feeding 10?

I have been searching all over trying to find where to get a coconut custard pie in NYC. You mention it above but then decline to name a place! please help!

The Cost of a 10-Person Thanksgiving Is $44.61

My pie ingredients topped my Thanksgiving grocery bill. Fruit, mincemeat, apple, and pumpkin. We don't need all 4, but it is a tradition. And I won't mention the wine. My turkey was the bargain.

Maybe they are getting this total by serving Swanson's Frozen Turkey TV dinners to the guests.

From Serious Eats

The Cost of a 10-Person Thanksgiving Is $44.61

I just went to a pre-Thanksgiving dinner and brought along a salad with homemade salad dressing. I spent about $25 on all the ingredients! Admittedly, I didn't use all of the oil, vinegar, etc., but I can't imagine serving 10 people for such a small amount of money.

From Serious Eats

The Cost of a 10-Person Thanksgiving Is $44.61

You can get a complete Tofurky kit for like, $16. It's supposed to serve 4...so, $4/serving. We had that last night as an early thanksgiving.

But in all seriousness, where on the East Coast is is possible to find stuff for that little money.

And seriously, who doesn't want a little (or a whole lot of) win on Turkey day? Even if you use boxed wine...

From Serious Eats

The Cost of a 10-Person Thanksgiving Is $44.61

My gosh, our conventionally raised turkey costs over $60. And this is barn-raised, they don't allow outdoor raised turkeys here.

From Serious Eats

I've been racking my brain to try to figure out how to keep my Thanksgiving for 5 under $100. I tend to go a bit overboard, so scaling back should help, but where on earth are they shopping to get all that for $44? Definitely not Manhattan.

From Serious Eats

The Cost of a 10-Person Thanksgiving Is $44.61

My turkey works out to be around 30 bucks alone.
Except, for our big day 2 years ago. My best friend and I always do Thanksgiving together and split work. I ordered a bone-in turkey breast from Whole Foods and he went to pick it up. I didn't ask the price, and when he went to pick it up it was 110 dollars. I wouldn't have bought it but he did, bless his heart. My grandma said everytime someone'd take a bite, she'd think "There goes 5 dollars". I'm thinking my dinner for 10 will be closer to $300.

Yum, Grand Traverse Pie Company. My sister works there and will be bringing us some type of fruit pie for thanksgiving. My mom is the pie maker in the family and will be making pumpkin and cherry pies made with Michigan cherries of course. I have been watching and helping her bake pies for years but I have a long way to go before mine taste as good.

Thanks Ed, I appreciate the update. Corner does still have the ready-to-bake Apple pie, in case care to try it. I have only had cupcakes and chocolate cake from the new location, and they were pretty good.

A Yura's update for Foodboy and everyone else. Yura is no longer making a ready to bake pie. It's very disappointing, but her fully baked apple pie is really good. I will miss that perfumed apple smell. Foodboy wanted to know about the Yura-partner split. I spoke to Yura and she said that she was only associated with the store at 92nd and Madison. I would stick to that location if possible. I haven't had anything at the 92nd and Third Ave. former Yura location, now called Corner, so I can't vouch for its food.

What is the Right Combination of Pies? My Annual Thanksgiving Pie Crisis

I'm so glad someone else feels paralyzed by dessert indecision! My friends laughed at me when I mentioned lying awake at night thinking about what desserts to serve, but as a passionate baker it's the one time of year where people don't demure when you offer them something full of sugar and butter.

So of course I want to take that opportunity to show off, but I feel like most people balk at a thanksgiving with non-traditional fare. And since I'm not wealthy enough to serve traditional and non, here's what I went with:

traditional pumpkin
apple tart
pecan (someone's bringing it - pecans aren't cheap in NYC!)
brownies

Along with heaping bowls of plain whipped cream and bourbon spiked whipped cream, of course.

You do have the right number of pies, thank heavens. As one against coconut in general, I'd replace coconut custard with plain custard. Cherry-peach is an intriguing combination.

We used to get/make a good mix when I was younger.
Pumpkin, Mince, Pecan, Coconut Custard, Apple, and a Ricotta cheese pie.
In the last decade we picked them up at Linvilla Orchards (Media PA) which is famous for the pies. http://www.linvilla.com/pdfs/bakery_menu.pdf
The Very Berry was a big hit.

We used to always go to my Aunt Ginny's for T'Giving. She had an extensive pie repertoire, but on this holiday it was always a choice of pumpkin, mincemeat or cherry.

I always had "a little piece of each?"
