Hunting the Slipper Lobster at Sea Breeze Fish Market in Bensonhurst

When we visit Australia (from New Zealand) I always try to engineer it so we visit an area that does Morton Bay Bugs and yes, they are a form of small lobster/large prawn (are they called shrimps in the US?) so must be of a similar ilk.

I adore them, hope you enjoyed yours, I love the recipe and must try it!

Great review on a place I had not yet discovered. Another treasure house of gourmet goodness described in loving detail, so the next trip next trip to NYC by this out-of-towner will be made even more worthwhile.

It's WHERE?!?!?!?! Heavens when I visit I must check it out. I love baklava too. A meet and greet cat - heaven indeed.

I'm with tdiddy too - that cat obviously samples the merchandise far too often. Thanks for a spotlight on another of NYC's gems.

Oh a lovely write up, life, food and history all in one breath! It's so atmospheric and I can almost smell the deli it looks so genuine. I can't wait to try the recipe! Thank you.

Fresh Cevapcici from the Adriatic Meat Market

Maybe the pronunciation depends on the regional accent - some of the accents here in New Zealand are just SO weird!! Obviously this guy is very proud of his stuff and, as usually, your reports made my mouth water. Oh to win enough money to visit NYC for a gourmet food crawl!!

Of course ginger snaps are ginger nuts :-)) made since time immemorial by the Ginger Nut Elves. (They are the ones with Very Strong Teeth).

Adore digestives though - this store is definitely in my books for my next US visit - the digestives in New Zealand are lame compared to these! and Black treacle a real standby for any self-respecting kitchen.

Wow what a fascinating place and, as you say, throw away the shopping list and dive in. Definitely a must visit when we re in NYC!!!!

There is really a lot to try in this store. The problem is I live far so I can't go that often. There are online websites that have some of their products such as www.gourmetnut.com but its not the same as going there.

@mrjosh: Chopped off how? It ended with the recipe, no? It was very good indeed: nice and garlicky, and the slippers were tender and tasted just as I was told, shrimpy and lobstery.

Since I love both shrimp and lobster, and get a vengeful delight in eating seafood "bugs" (having an aversion to insects), the slipper sounds like my perfect food. And what's more perfect than garlic and parsley? Can't wait to try!

This does look like the Bugs I've had in Australia. When they are served in shell, they look like a lobster tail. I def. ate my fair share during my 2 week visit to Australia

@Majorie - Shrimp are very different than bay bugs.

Has anyone been to their original offices in Bay Ridge? I've driven past it a couple of times, and I hear it is both wholesale and retail, but I've never been inside.

The Chinese-Norwegian restaurant was originally Fredheim's (or maybe no "i" - Fredhjem? as in home? - not quite sure)- going back to the 1930's at least. My Mom waitressed there and met my Dad there - a Swede. I ate there a number of times growing up in the 50's & 60's and went back in the 80's with my elderly Mom when it was both - the previous Norwegian proprieter taught the Chinese cooks how to do panakakke, kompa, all the rest - and they did it superbly. Sorry to hear it is gone.

@Barbara -

No worries. My apologies for being so jumpy. I can't seem to shake my overprotection of my beloved Jersey Shore!

All that said. you may appreciate my review of Max's - one of my favorite eating establishments ever...

Ubereater, I was joshing. From where I sit, I can see six pictures of the Shore, not including my desktop. I have been going down for a couple weeks for years, and am counting the days until I hit the Donut Hole in Normandy Beach again. Glad you approved of the rest!

I do find Little Italy too crowded and inauthentic these days, but would venture there (or anywhere) for some good mozzarella. And stuffed shells are an underappreciated pasta dish - thanks for reminding us of their sublime nature.
