My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

i love everything about Thanksgiving... maybe because I was born on a Thanksgiving day a few years ago ;) and it marks the start of Xmas season... it's sucha happy time for me, always.

I used to love the whole menu combination. And would most look forward eating the same menu a few times via the leftovers. and even now that I am vegetarian, I think my favorite part are the sweet potatoes/yams... my mom used to make them with marshmallows on top. YUMMM.

What's your spice aversion?

CUMIN... after 3 weeks in India a few years ago, i developed an aversion to cumin after a whole week straight of eating food seasoned with cumin. Everything tasted the same.

Now, I can't even smell it at the supermarket.

From Talk

Where can I find quince?

don't know what you want quince for... but if you go to a store that sells Spanish goodies, ask for MEMBRILLO or MEMBRILLO PASTE, which is sort of a guava paste - very sweet, but great to eat alongside manchego cheese.

From Talk

Got a Per Se reservation- have questions

i got to meet the PerSe sommelier ina recent trip to NYC... his name is JAMES and he's super nice. I am sure that if you explain your tastes and preferences, he'll be able to recommend wine options that will fit your budget and taste.

Don't quote me on this, but I think i've heard they have a wine supplement to go with their tasting menu (I am dying to try their vegetarian tasting menu) its about $100 for glasses of wines that will go with each course... maybe they have something similar but for 1/2 the courses... when you're shelling $200+ for dinner, what's $75-100 more to have the full experience, no??

From Talk

Is this a novice pseudo-vegetarian problem?

the same happened to me when I ate red meat after a long period of not eating it. Your body just got used to a more natural, less difficult way of digesting food. red meat is very tough for your body to digest... and you only find out about it when your body takes a break from it.

my reco... delete red meat from your diet alltogether now. your body evidently does not need it and does not agrees with it anymore.

From Talk

How to have a more healthy, varied diet???

i like the idea of integrating more vegetarian recipes into your rotation... people think that vegetarians meals might be boring, but apparently chicken is boring too because people get tired of eating it the same way over and over...

visit some blogs or websites to gather some ideas on how to mix and match what you already love into different, interesting preparations. Also, explore your local market and try new ingredients you might have never tried before... look for recipes using these new ingredients to enlarge your recipe repertoire.

Bad Host: Invited to dinner and asked to PAY! Would you?

fully agree with you... you either fully invite someone or not invite anyone at all.

I once worked for a VERY WELL-KNOWN multi-national packaged goods company in which all beauty care marketing employees were "cordially invited" by our Department Director to a Xmas lunch on a workday. And the written invitation said our attendance was expected.

After we finished our lunch, someone at the top of the table let all of us know that the contribution from each for the lunch came out to $25. We were dumbfounded... and each had to fork out $25 to pay our way. Even the assistants, who earned well below what us managers earned.

From that day on, when someone invited you for lunch we would ask for clarification - are you inviting me??? or are you CORDIALLY INVITING me??

Does one need a microwave?

NOPE - I thought I did, but my 14yr old microwave over died on me at the end of last year. It's been 10months+ without it and I have missed it only very few times. Not a big deal in my house... my toaster oven works for me just fine... without the radiation.

From Talk

Toaster oven recommendations

I've had a Black & Decker basic toaster over for years and has never let me down. it cost me about $30 at Kmart. I've looked to replace it with a fancier model, but none convinces me to change yet.

A Twist on Something Old and Boring

my new twist on burgers - portobello mushroom burgers. I usually do not like traditional veggie burger patties. So when I see portobello mushroom burgers on a menu, I go for them.

From Talk

Casual Fall dinner party ideas

i love the pasta idea... you can embellish the pasta and make it a bit fancier with gorgonzola cheese and walnuts or even truffle butter and mushrooms. All these will most surely impress your friends, accomodate your vegetarian friend and nobody will miss the meat.

Some interesting sides are baked plantains in their skins... if you can find them in Ontario. I like the sweet contrast to a cheesy salty pasta. They're easy to make and no added fat. Salad and breadsticks make the meal...IMHO.

Good luck.

From Talk

Vegetarian Lifestyle

I think meat eaters get tired of chicken, beef, pork, et al. I know my mom cooked about 8,183,007 chickens, seemingly all in a row for a while - and I couldn't even EAT chicken till about a year after that. I'm not against occasionally having all-vegetarian meals, I like to do that a couple of times a week.

From Talk

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

I also love Thanksgiving - it's my favorite holiday, hands down. My favorite food is Mama's dressing. She bakes cornbread separately, sautes onion and celery, breaks up the cornbread and adds the vegetables, chicken broth, and some of the drippings from the turkey pan and then bakes the mixture. Since it never goes inside the turkey, it's not stuffing, but dressing, and it is yummy!
I love how everybody talks about how cozy Thanksgiving is. I absolutely agree and I love the day after, too. Turkey sandwiches on sourdough bread - yum!

From Talk

Vegetarian Lifestyle

I've been vegetarian my whole life (I was raised that way) and I think something that most people forget about is ethnic cuisine. I've found that many people who are accustomed only to American food have a very hard time cutting out meat.

In addition the the books mentioned above (Mark Bittman's is excellent for new vegetarians), check out some Indian, Thai, Middle Eastern, and Mexican cookbooks - all of these cuisines are very vegetarian-friendly and use lots of spices and bold flavors, so they're very satisfying.

From Talk

Vegetarian Lifestyle

Try new things! Different cuisines. We make a lot of veggie burritos, rice and beans, fried rice with seitan, risotto with veggies. Vegetarian proteins like tofu and seitan (and veggie sausages, burgers and the like if that's your thing - it's definitely mine) keep much longer than meat, so they're easy to throw in the fridge for pantry meals. Beans keep even longer. There's great meals based around eggs - frittatas, eggs in purgatory, breakfast burritos.

Also, if there's multiple members of your family and some are less enthusiastic than others (or less willing to go cold turkey), you can try a "kosher kitchen" type approach. Make and stock vegetarian food around the house, but don't enforce rules outside of the house.

Neither me nor my partner is vegetarian, but we're both former longtime vegetarians (20+ years in his case, veganism in my case). We're at the point where most of our weekday meals are vegetarian simply because it's easier.

I would have to say that the most important thing is to keep a balanced diet eating a variety of vegetables, grains, and legumes prepared in a variety of ways. The worst thing that people can do is assume that as long as they are eating vegetarian it is healthy. Also, I eat beans in some form pretty much everyday. I could never tire of them. They are delicious and you can do so many things with them. YUM!

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

Regarding KarynMC:
You can NEVER say that only a family member would try to poison a child. Get real, there are sick people out there who get off on doing their dirty deed.

Also, please let me know where those chocolate chip cookies are being handed out so that I'll miss that house. :)

From Talk

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

Of course you can go back to the houses that give good candy, but always remember to go back at the end of the night to the houses that didn't get a lot of visitors. Why? They'll have left over candy, and they'll be willing to get rid of it.

Only give pre-packaged candy to trick or treaters. You can make special packs of home-baked goods for those you know well, but most parents will not allow their children to eat homemade goods. Them's just the breaks.

From Talk

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

Liability, Liability, Liability great idea but the reality is that if a child gets sick and the lawyer came knocking at your door then it truly ends up being a situation of “no good deed goes unpunished”. I will agree also with Heartofglass there are a lot of towns that have laws prohibiting distributing food without a health permit.

Having said that I am quite older and when I was young in the late 50’s and 60’s the most popular treats were homemade. There was this woman that gave out candy apples to die for, I’ve never been able to find another candy apple that is just like the ones she made.

What I think is so very sad is that children have to be protect from adults and we as a society don’t see how disturbing that really is

From Talk

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

Years ago I heard someone say that they simply threw away anything that was not professionally packaged. It could have been the best cookie ever made, but it went to the landfill. It was their concern for safety. It would make me sad to think all that work you did was for nothing.

I can up one on @arm1970 My granddaughter's school doesn't want parents to bring cakes, cupcakes or cookies for birthday celebrations period. It is encouraged to bring fruit (grapes are the fav, but what if your child doesn't like them), raisins, nuts or other healthy items. The kids that might eat carrots might choke on them. Can't win. I get it-most kids get too much of sugar and fats. There is a child that has a peanut allergy in her class, therefore, we are asked not even to bring that item. Understandably so, but it sure knocks your options down another peg. Some parents buy trinkets and that is a much greater cost than a batch of cookies prepared at home and I have noticed that the trinkets are floating around the house with little or no attention.

My daughter decided to skip the school ritual last year and my g-daughter was very sad. Looks like raisins!

From Talk

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

When I was a kid there was a house in the neighborhood that gave out homemade candy apples - but they only had about 2 dozen of them. We used to come home from school, get in our costumes, go to The McHarg's house, get our candy apples, go home, do homework, eat supper and THEN go out and do the rest of our trick-or-treating. We just HAD to have those candy apples - they were the highlight of our Halloween treats. On the other hand - another family gave out popcorn balls. The only reason we went to their house is because we knew them really well and HAD to go to their house. When we got home we would throw the popcorn balls away. We HATED those things.

Vegetarian foods and flavor combo ideas:

pumpkin/squash and peanut butter/almond
black beans with plantains on the side
tofu and braised greens (kale,chard,spinach)
lentils and rice/bulgar
cheese and tomato (grilled cheese sandwich anyone?)
mushroom and barley (sorry not much protein there)
hummous!
falafel!

From Talk

Bad Host: Invited to dinner and asked to PAY! Would you?

I used to date a guy who would complain about the food so he didn't have to pay for his dinner when we went out to eat. I, of course, had to pay for mine and my son's. After awhile, I got smart and stopped dating this guy.
There are cheapskates and there are people who just love to see if they can get away with having someone else pay for them. I am the type that doesn't get burnt as much as I once did. I will pay once. After that, I doubt I will be your 'friend'.

From Talk

"I don't have kids." Just read that again now.

Which explains the whole idea of "pumpkin chocolate chip cookies" or the whole idea of home-made goods to kids on Halloween in the first place.

From Talk

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

Again, I would repeat my concerns more for you with 'liability'--but I am still shocked that kids would vandalize or litter simply because they got a treat they didn't like/couldn't eat. That is really sad.

When I was young, weirdly everyone had dire warnings about homemade treats, but many (bad!bad!bad!) houses gave out APPLES--with foil-wrapped coins stuck in them. Usually little old ladies yet somehow those were 'okay' to eat because apples were healthy. But that's really more sanitary than a cookie in a cellophane bag from someone you know. ;P

From Talk

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

@trilby I love to do that too. I remember when I was young I loved the cool little bags with two or three items in them. Fun stuff. They where always the first thing I checked out. Sadly the days of homemade popcorn balls and carmel apples from neighbors are over. But like the above posters said, make something for coworkers I know mine love it when I just bring in a plate of brownies.

From Talk

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

I forgot to say, if you personally know the parents of certain kids why not put some cookies in a nice bag or wrapped on a paper plate and personally go to their houses to deliver them before halloween?

From Talk

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

Many moons ago when I was a trick or treater myself, a woman gave out what she assured us was "homemade fudge", after saying thank you and walking down her steps we saw her lawn was littered with said "homemade fudge".
