Cook the Book: Pumpkin Baking
Good old fashioned pumpkin pie (from a can) with homemade whipped cream.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 88: Are Bananas Helping or Hurting My Weight?
I would cut back to one banana, especially if you're going to put peanut butter on it.
Depending on the PB, a tablespoon is usually ~110 calories. A banana, depending on size is between ~100-120 calories (based on a 7" standard banana). So two bananas and a tbsp of PB, you're already consuming about 330 calories.
It sucks, but try calorie counting for a day - just to get an idea of where you stand. I was surprised about how many calories I was consuming daily and not realizing it.
Cook the Book: 'The Craft of Baking'
I love this book already.
Gelato from the Gelateria dei Neri in Florence, Italy.
The mousse from Chez Josephine in NYC.
Billy's Bakery's Icebox cake in vanilla, also in NYC.
Weekend Book Giveaway: 'Cake Wrecks'
My most recent baking mistake: Making oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and forgetting the oatmeal. It took an embarrassingly long time to figure out what was missing!
Not baking, per say, but the olive oil story reminded me of a time when I tried to make Annie's mac and cheese without butter. I substituted EVOO instead thinking it would taste the same (stupid). It was hands down the most disgusting pasta I've ever had.
Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'
My first cookbook was an Australian chocolate cookbook. I bought it because the recipes looked delicious, but I didn't realize everything was in grams until I actually made something. I had to find a conversation chart to finish.

Greek salads - red tomatoes, olives, feta (so not vegan), chopped lettuce, red onion, cucumbers, no peppers, with olive oil and red wine vinegar.
Maybe a side of taramosalata (depending on whether you eat fish roe...)?
Should Junk Food Help Pay for Health Care?
Healthy food can be cheap - it just takes a bit more time and effort to find. If you want to be healthy on a very small budget, you can (I'm forced to do it now as I'm basically unpaid). It's a decision to do what is necessary to buy healthy food at inexpensive prices. People do it everyday. The line at Trader Joe's is a great example of a commitment to health at affordable prices. Why are we justifying those that choose not to? A better question is why are they choosing not to?
Junk food is convenient, fast and feeds laziness. Why shouldn't this be taxed? We should be encouraging people to promote a healthy lifestyle as a part of their life/habits - it's worth the extra effort to live healthily. We shouldn't be promoting the values that junk food symbolizes.
I can buy plenty of fruits and veggies for the same price as a big mac meal. Dollar menu? Bananas run for less than a dollar a pound. Buying organic may be a luxury, but buying healthy (non-organic) is not.
I agree with cupcakemuffin's idea: "Obesity also seems to be related to poverty, for a lot of reasons, so I don't see how taxing it is useful, unless--how about a tax on junk food that pays for subsidies for fruits, veggies, and lean proteins, as well as classes to teach folks how to make fast meals at home from these ingredients."
Cook the Book: '660 Curries' by Raghavan Iyer
In New York: Simla on 78th and 2nd. It has changed hands many times since I've tried it, but the food is consistently good. Favorite dish: chicken tikka marsala.
Should Hot Dogs Carry Warning Labels?
@KarynMC - Thank you for posting that.
I'm not sure that the warning label will solve the issues the Cancer Group wants to address. For example, in New York City almost all chain restaurants/coffeeshops/and the like publicly post the number of calories in everything they serve. This was ordered as part of an effort to reduce obesity (probably among other things). Curious to see if it was working, I asked a few store merchants whether it deterred customers from ordering certain high calorie items. To my surprise in the 3 or 4 I questioned, their answer was no (yes, my survey group was small but it gave me an idea). It's the same with smoking - we can post warnings, show advertisements on TV, show statistics, but if the consumer wants to do it anyway, s/he will and a warning ad isn't going to stop them.
This campaign almost seems to benefit the hotdog companies more since adding a label will make it that much more difficult to sue if said customer does receive cancer from eating their product over the years.

'Top Chef Masters,' Ep. 5: Junk Food, a Big Dinner, a New Way of Looking at Panna Cotta
I love this show - and I agree that Jay Rayner is a much more interesting, funny, charismatic judge than Toby Young. Keep Jay on Top Chef!

Cook the Book: 'Mrs. Rowe's Little Book of Southern Pies'
I love southern food, including of course, pies.
I once made an apple pie that turned out very well. I made an awesome chocolate cake with sour cream in the mix, but I lost the recipe :(
Watch It with Us: ‘Top Chef Masters,’ Episode 4
This is such an awesome show. I love the camaraderie between respected chefs. Since they are all established already, it's less about backstabbing and sabotaging the competition and more about cooking for cooking's sake - no matter who wins, someone will be helped and some cause will be supported.
:)
Cook the Book: 'The Barcelona Cookbook'
In Barcelona - wonderful olives and potatoes in pink sauce.
Best of Trader Joe ?
Great place to buy nuts (cashews, pecans, walnuts) - much cheaper than Whole Foods. Generally, Trader Joe's is fantastic for basics and less expensive than its competition. By basics, bread, condiments - anything packaged.
I wouldn't buy produce there, however, it's better from a farmer's market or a Whole Foods-type store.
