Now that I know how to make ___ I will never buy it again.

Salad dressings, soups, pasta sauces ... the biggest "whoa why didn't I ever make my own because it makes such a huge difference and is so easy" is homemade enchilada sauce.

I'm going to try this:

Pumpkin Cheesecake with Marshmallow-Sour Cream Topping and Gingersnap Crust

I had already decided on pumpkin cheesecake and this recipe looks very good. But I have never made a cheesecake from scratch so I told everybody coming that they should definitely bring their own favorite dessert as a welcome Plan B.

Give me your winter soup recipes

Curried Lentil Soup:

Sweat onions, celery and carrot in some olive oil
Add some smashed garlic
Add curry paste once the veggies are soft
Add lentils and chicken stock
Season with salt and pepper and add a bay leaf
Once the lentils are tender add coconut milk
Towards the end add some frozen peas

I've also thrown in frozen butternut squash ... very good
I've also thrown in leftover pork roast ... very, very good

A Halloween Candy Hierarchy: What's Your Favorite Trick or Treat?

My favorite growing up was sugar babies.

My favorite at 51 is the little special dark in the miniatures collection. I really luck out because I'm the only one who likes dark chocolate ... they are ALL mine.

Candy is miss ... ice cubes ... little chocolate cubes of very, very sweet chocolate.

Go-To Cookies

Me, too, with the chicken enchiladas. Only my recipe is out of cooking light with tomatillos, chicken stock, and cilantro. It's a fabulous recipe but I'd really like to try out new fabulous recipes. It's great cooking for work people because they are more adventurous eaters than my family but they are stuck on those damn enchiladas.

From Talk

What can't you cook?

I can't deep fry anything. I guess it's fear of high temps or something ... everything I try is greasy and heavy ... blech.

From Talk

What fruit could you eat every day for the rest of your life?

Fresh pineapple ... I could eat it at every meal. Pineapple with bananas for breakfast, pineapple in a salad for lunch, grilled pineapple as a side with dinner and a slice of pineapple with a scoop of ice cream for dessert.

Snapshots from Asia: Jook

When my sister got married in Hawaii her reception was a big outdoor party and after about the 20th hour I desperately wanted to crawl away and get some sleep but my sister's new father-in-law wouldn't let us leave until we had some jook ... I can't remember if it was for good luck or what ... but it's hard to take after a night of hard partying. And I don't think I could ever face it again.

Tasty toast toppers....

toasted white bread with a good slopping of mayo and thick sliced beefsteak tomatoes

toasted dark wheat bread with a heaping of smashed white beans + roasted garlic + goat cheese (or feta)

toasted whole grain bread with a slathering of cream cheese topped with a dollop of strawberry preserves

Meal Planning - Does anyone still do it?

I'm another planner. I plan dinners for Sunday-Thursday and lunches for at least three days. I have a large dinner repertoire and mix it up depending on what's in season, how much money I have, and if I've seen anything interesting online or on the Food Network. I place my food order on Saturday and it's delivered on Sunday at noon. I usually have fish on Sunday since it's delivered that day and because that's a quick dinner to prepare I do any other time-consuming prep for later in the week (e.g., poaching chicken and cooking tomatillos for chicken enchiladas). I wish I was as organized in other areas of my life as I am with the food part but the food part is a budget breaker if it's not planned.

Childhood, Part II. What did you hate then that you love now?

I hated mayonnaise and butter as a child. Conversely I loved Miracle Whip and now I can't stand the stuff.

From Talk

Question of the Day: What drives you nuts about other people's eats?

People who have to justify eating, e.g., ordinarily I wouldn't eat this much for lunch so I'll just skip dinner. Get real.

Now that I know how to make ___ I will never buy it again.

I've never not made my own/not had my grandmother's own red sauce, so I guess that would be it? If I do run out in the dead of winter I buy canned crushed tomatoes and season myself, but I've never ever bought pre-seasoned red sauce. Same goes for pesto! If I need some in the dead of winter I'll buy basil, but mostly I just make it myself.

BREAD! It's a new addition, but if I ever buy bread, it'll be a nice, fresh-baked, locally made loaf, none of that preservative-filled pre-sliced stuff.

I WISH I could say pasta was on this list, but I haven't learned it yet. Sigh. Maybe when I get a bigger kitchen.

And also, applesauce.

Soup. I never really ate it at home unless it was from a can-- now I know how to make many soup bases and that is what I do! Soup is probably one of my favorite things to make now that I think of it.

I think the no brainers are STOCK, SALAD DRESSINGS and TOMATO SAUCE.
I recently made a homemade chicken pot pie (I would never buy one), and it was so delicious that I wondered how Swanson's or Banquet have the nerve to make that frozen gluey crap and call it pot pie!

Im sticking to the "Now I know how to make" part of this, because some of the stuff people have been mentioning I've never bought in the first place, so theres no "buy it again."

Anyways... tomato sauce! We just started making it about a month ago, and we agreed that the jarred stuff is not even close to worth our money anymore :) I love making stuff from scratch, I feel so accomplished!

Gnocchi

After the girlfriend and I made gnocchi that just melted in your mouth and blew away anything I've had store-bought or in a restaurant, I don't think I'll ever purchase it again. It was a little bit of work, but fantastically worth it.

Marmalade. I was scared of it at first, but it's so easy, and so much cheaper than the kind I prefer (which does come in a nifty crock, but I've saved all my old ones so that's all right).

@elderberry44~I don't want your recipe. I want to give you my mailing address. Really.
@dbcurrie~where are you? You make tamales? Come over!
And I don't remember (go figure) if I said it, stock, biscuits, many soups, squash, tomato, asparagus , spinach, broccoli...pies, cakes, salad dressing, frosting, WHIPPED CREAM, holiday cookies.

And anything else that you guys can teach me to make.

Wild Mushroom Bundles sounds really good. we always like to do at least one mushroom dish for the table. I looked at alternative to turkey, but was disappointed that there was only one veg idea and it sounded kind of gross. We have so many guests that we like to provide many different options to choose from.

I like the Pioneer Woman's Sweet Potatoes recipe. The ingredients are simple, as is the preparation. I've been looking for a new sweet potato recipe, as my sweet potatoes & apples are a bit played out. This fits the bill perfectly!
