What is your foolproof, fallback dessert?

Panna Cotta. It has to be made ahead of time but it's quick to put together, tastes most awesome and looks fancy.

Alice Waters Proposes New School Lunch Program

I agree there is a problem but I'm not sure this is the solution. I always pack for my little girl but today we were out of ham so she had to buy. Do you know what they had? Cheese sticks and marinara sauce! How is that a lunch? That cost $2.25 so can you imagine what they would have charge for a decent meal. It's a broken system but how you fix it I don't know.

Food-related lies/myths that adults tell kids?

I used to love finishing off my mother's coffee. My dad did not like this habit so he told me that drinking coffee would stunt your growth. He may be right though, I am only 5' 1". Of course my mother is very short to so it could be genetic and not our coffee habits!

Really missing the point

My daughter is proof that a ban doesn't have to be in effect to make sure that those with allergies are protected and not left out. Her friend has a severe peanut allergy, the school does not have a ban but the little girl has to eat in the classroom not the cafeteria and no peanut products are allowed to enter her classroom. My daughter, who until this year would only eat peanut butter sandwiches, makes sure to pack a peanut free lunch every day so that her friend will always have a lunch buddy. Her pal's mother has thanked her and me over and over for this. It's not a big deal to us so we don't mind. One person can make a difference. The child is protected and those who need to can bring peanut butter.

Skittles-Infused Vodka, Taste the Alcoholic Rainbow

This reminds me of putting Jolly Ranchers in Zima in college. Though I'm thinking this would taste a lot better then that.

Help! Cookie Dough in check-in luggage?

My brother-in-law works for the TSA he will be here in about an hour. I will ask him but checking with customs is never a bad idea. They are picky about food items.

Home-Baked or Store-Bought? Or: Huh? Are you kidding me?

I feel your pain. The other night I made homemade manicott with the yummiest cheese filling and my daughter chose to eat boxed mac-n-cheese and chicken nuggets at her friend's house instead. I was hurt but I didn't let her know that.

Not a big fan of it either and I don't think that you have to like every spice and herb out there.

Red Onions. They cannot be simply picked off or ignored, you can still taste them in every bite. Yuck.

I don't have a ___ in my kitchen and I don't want one.

I have four kids and I don't feel lazy at all using the microwave, esp when you throw my 7 month old nephew in the mix. I don't have bread maker or an electirc can opener and I don't want either. I love my mandoline and my food pro. I really want a KitchenAid stand mixer and a bamboo steamer.

From Talk

One cup coffee makers

You can buy replacement or extra carafes if you break one or want to switch out for tea. We have a Bodum too that we got through Illy USA. I was a sceptic when we first got it but I really like it. It's great for travel too.

From Talk

One cup coffee makers

I would recommend a french press. It's cheaper, you can use any coffee(or loose tea) you want and it'll last forever(unless you drop the carafe in the sink ala my husband). The taste is pretty amazing as well.

My mom's Betty Crocker from the 70's. It's the first cookbook I ever used and I still reference it a lot.

Am I the only one on the planet who dislikes ___, or loves ___?

I hate strawberries. Not a fan of swiss or feta cheese. Vodka is gross. I will only eat all beef hotdogs. Love cranberry juice. Don't really like water. I like pork way better than chicken.

It looks just like the Kraft "cooking" magazine that my mother gets. Not really recipes as such just ways to combine their products.

Love: braunschwieger, canned tuna, mayo(i eat things to have an excuse to eat it), malt vinegar

Hate: raw tomatoes, mushrooms(it's the texture mostly), raw onions, salmon

Amen "omnomnom"! (I'm from Mich, too. Same area)

From Slice

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?

I absolutely love ranch on my pizza. Granted, I am a middle-school student (though homeschooled), and got the idea from my (middle school, homeschooled) friends after we started dipping French-Fries in Ranch (that's justified in Mich--here most of the fries are way too greasy or way too dry). We decided to try it on our pizza--and it's great. Only Hidden Valley (tm) works though. Deep dish pizza doesn't need it, fortunately. A group fave for us is cayenne pepper, fresh black pepper, ranch, and tabasco sauce. I agree, if it's good pizza, it doesn't need condiments, but (1) pizza in metro-detroit isn't that good, and (2), it doesn't matter if it needs it--if ya want it, I say put it on unashamedly!

Is It Just Me, or Does Saffron Taste Terrible?

A little saffron goes a very long way......

I also really dislike tarragon. I think it's because it is often overused in dishes. Too much totally overwhelms most dishes and it is a very strong distinctive taste. Needless to say, I also heartily dislike licorace.

From Talk

Is It Just Me, or Does Saffron Taste Terrible?

It's not just you - I hate it. I think it tastes like Bactine.

Reddi-wip or Cool Whip: Way or No Way?

@toad. It sure does. As a matter of fact it's sitting in my fridge right now...

From Talk

Reddi-wip or Cool Whip: Way or No Way?

I loved both as a kid, but as I've grown up, something about Cool Whip has really started to freak me out. Of course I prefer homemade whipped cream, but in a pinch, Reddi-Whip is surprisingly good. And yeah, it can liven up a party pretty handily. Although...Cool Whip has a spray-topped can now too, doesn't it?

From Talk

Reddi-wip or Cool Whip: Way or No Way?

Yeah, tub of Cool Whip + spoon = Happy Girl

If I'm making the real stuff, I absolutely prefer that, but as far as ready made topping? Yeah, definitely Cool Whip.

From Talk

Reddi-wip or Cool Whip: Way or No Way?

I grew up with Reddi-Whip and never Cool Whip because my father was extremely allergic to it (as in, ate it once unintentionally and was hospitalized). It might be psychsomatic but I think it gives me a headache so I still avoid it.

I prefer whipped cream from an Isi creme whipper; just as easy as ReddiWhip but so much better.

Nostalgia Via King Arthur Flour's Monkey Bread Mix

Hello - check this out
http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/items/italian-herb-and-cheese-monkey-bread-mix
Savory plus 2 sweet styles, in a bag. Less expensive than going through Williams Sonoma. Plus you can call King Arthur anytime and a professional will help you through whatever issue you are having. They are a wonderful company in Vermont, it's worth the trip for the serious baker.

We have a savory bread here called "Pork Bread" made with bacon, ham and onions from the local Polish bakery.
Bacon makes anything better...

Snapshots from the UK: Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food

FYI:

I just ordered up a picnic for my flight home, and it looks like the take away meals from Gordon Ramsay Plane Food no longer come with bread, butter or olives. Also, you might want to check to make sure that everything has made it into your meal bag - my salmon sandwich was missing its apple walnut salad.

Otherwise, the picnic was lovely and delicious! 2 thumbs up!

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?

I have NEVER heard of this culinary habit of ranch dressing on pizza until I read this in the Wash. Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/27/AR2008052700821.html

It just seems like such an incongruous flavor or condiment to add to a pizza.

From Slice

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?

Nothing is better than Ham & Pineapple pizza dipped in Ranch.

I hated pizza until I tried it with ranch. Any type of pizza goes great with ranch really except Mexican style, I usually dip that in sour cream.

"like gasoline in a monkey's butt..."

LOL! That is my new favorite descriptor of something I don't like. Thank you!

Personally, I've never used saffron because I think the stuff is just way too damn expensive.

From Talk

Is It Just Me, or Does Saffron Taste Terrible?

@deefine and donnie - disliking tarragon must be a fairly common thing. I, too, have a lack of fondness for tarragon. I don't actually hate it, but it is my least favorite herb.

I mean, it's fine occasionally, but I don't, personally, choose to cook with it.

Is It Just Me, or Does Saffron Taste Terrible?

Saffron is a very strong ingredient and only a few strands are required to flavor most dishes. It has an odd flavor (much like cilantro), and is not for everyone. Although, since two of the times you disliked it, you made the dish yourself, perhaps it is the quality of the saffron you are using? I have purchased lousy saffron in the past, and have even had bad cinnamon before that ruined my oatmeal, too. I suppose if it were my first time, I would be under the impression that cinnamon tasted like dull, metallic soap.

Saffron, like Rosemary, is pungent. It has strong medicinal qualities and is known to enhance strength and bring a feeling of joy and exuberance. Thus, it is a fine aphrodisiac, among other things. But, if overused, it can have a negative effect and can overpower. Subtlety is the key when using saffron. Just like too much oregano can make a dish taste like Listerine, too much saffron is not pleasant.

However, stating that saffron ruined your Paella is a non sequitur, since saffron is the key ingredient in Paella. Just saying...

All that said, you just may not like the stuff. And, that's okay. :)

Cheers,

~ Paula

I like saffron, when used properly. I like cilantro, again, when use properly. I even like cayenne when used with caution, but I HATE super hot chilis or any dish wherein the chilis overwhelm everything else.

These kinds of things really are a matter of taste and anything can be overdone, like ginger and garlic.

From Talk

Is It Just Me, or Does Saffron Taste Terrible?

I despise the taste of saffron. I've had real saffron, too - I tried it in multiple dishes when I was in Madrid. It tastes like metal to me.

From Talk

Is It Just Me, or Does Saffron Taste Terrible?

I don't care for it. I find it kind of dusty-tasting, and don't like how it seems to overpower everything in a dish. It's a lovely color, but I don't want my fish to be nearly indistinguishable from my veg. I liken it to pouring maple syrup over your whole meal. You know there are different things on your plate, but they all sort of taste the same.

From Talk

Is It Just Me, or Does Saffron Taste Terrible?

ya i agree its you, becaus i too hate the taste/flavour of saffron, where as in my culture people use it in most desserts but I just cant stand even after trying all my life , to the extent that I avoid tradtional dishes much to the amusement of all the folks espt as it is s exotic and so terribly costly
