Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
tonight, ricotta/tomato/caramelized onion pizza and beet salad with poppy seed dressing, though it would usually be something like a banana with almond butter.

Making clafoutis in a REMOVABLE-BOTTOM tart pan. Enough said.
Cook the Book: 'A16 Food + Wine'
When I wasn't yet a teenager my dad let me try his glass of wine. I distinctly remember it being an Amarone, and I knew at that time I'd always love red wine!
This Weekend in 'New York Times' Food News
It's spelled with an H and the H stands for "hip," says the New York Times!
I love my fair city of Pittsburgh!

My favorite edible gift to give is ______
Forecast for this year: ubiquitous limoncello!
I'd love to try to make it!
SE users: please introduce yourselves.
Oh I love these. Hungrygrl and Susquehanna, I'm another fellow Pittsburgher. I'm 23, in graduate school for physical therapy. Secretly though, I organize my pantry and daydream about what I'll make for dinner when I should be studying. It just makes me so happy to be in the kitchen.
Sourdough starter
I"m so glad someone asked, because I was thinking the same thing - how do I get a starter? My question is this: has anyone who has made one successfully compared it with an old one from somebody else? I've heard that the flavor is better. It is always a better idea to get a portion of an old starter?
Cook the Book: The River Cottage Cookbook
Right now, just herbs (third floor apartment, grad school). Chives, basil, savory, and mint.
Harissa: What do you do with it?
I was sitting in class yesterday and I realized that I have some ground pork in the freeze. How good would pork burgers be filled with harissa, onions, and garlic?
Signature ingredient -- and is it a flaw or fav?
Parsley. I mean, it is good and all, but it's ridiculous how much I put it in my food. Already green salad? Parsley, check. Yogurt? check. The only line I draw is my morning oatmeal :)
What one famous chef would you choose to emulate?
Gabrielle Hamilton. Whenever I read/hear anything from her, I think that she sounds so down to earth and off the cuff regarding Prune and her menu. I like that she is humble AND inventive about her craft. Plus, I remember seeing something on the menu once that I had made recently for myself, in some incarnation: it was a "sandwich" of green tomato jam with bacon. I was jealous and admiring at the same time!
Dinner Tonight: Open-Faced Egg Salad And Watercress Sandwich
How about curried with diced apples and nuts?
Cook the Book: The Cornbread Gospels
It used to be at Alto Cinco, little American-Mexican joint in Syracuse, NY. Jalapenos and bacon. Recently, they've really modified the menu to make it veg-friendly. It's still decent, but bacon is supreme, right?
Do you tempeh here?
I agree that it isn't my favorite, but it can be good for a little variety. With tempeh, it is all about marinating. I like it marinated in a tamari/mirin/sesame oil mixture. You can pan-fry it with some garlic and onion powder in that mixture. I've made it this way and finished it roasting in the oven with some also-seasoned sweet potatoes. That was very yummy!
Cook the Book: The Sweet Melissa Baking Book
brownie a la mode. Sometimes I think it would be something more serious, but I think it's heaven and I love it the most!

Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
When I eat alone, the treat is really in not having to choose something to make and not having to cook anything. So I snack on crackers, bagels, cherry tomatoes, toast with butter and jam and especially fresh popcorn.
Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
I usually boil some pasta and top it off with an easy homemade sauce consisting of tomatoes, olive oil, basil, and garlic. A little cheese on top is nice, too. kneecree at gmail dot com
Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
I live alone, so I eat alone most of the time. I really like the frozen fish that comes individually packed because I can take it out of the freezer the night before or even that morning and I don't have to worry about mediocre leftovers. I also like eating breakfast foods for dinner since making up a nice omelet is a quick and easy meal.
