How do you make your egg salad, tuna salad, ham salad...
Here are all my basic ones:
Tuna: Hard boiled egg, mayo, maybe a little onion, Old bay- no other seasonings required
Chicken: Celery, Mayo, salt, pepper, onion/garlic powder, parsley if its around
Ham: Mustard & mayo in equal amounts, a little salt, pepper, fine chopped celery, onion, and pickles.
Egg: Mayo and mustard, old bay, salt pepper
I Love sandwiches :)
He said, 'Broccoli is the anchovy of vegetables'
Bananas!
I HATE them and if there are any at all in a fruit salad, dessert, smoothie, or anything like that I spit it out immediately. My friend has a goal of one day making a dessert that has banana in it that I will eat. It's not happening, I loathe anything banana or banana flavored.
What did you end up eating or serving for the Super Bowl?
Guac, Buffalo wing dip, salsa, bean dip, sour cream and a bunch of stuff to dip into them all. My friend brought over a double crust apple pie and some mint brownies. Oh and caramel ice cream on the pie, I could hardly make it to the 4th quarter for that. MMMMM
For four of us it was WAY too much food and it was all junk, which is the best way to celebrate the Superbowl.

Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I gave up Meat last year, that was tough but I made it. I also "overmeated" at Easter that was rather unpleasant. This year I am giving up all fried foods. I ate chips and KFC yesterday and so many fries on Monday night that I am looking forward to avoiding them.
I'm not Catholic, I just like to do it bc. I never fast and its really only a short time.

Snapshots from the UK: Turkish Delight
I remember reading the book in 4th or 5th grade and our teachers brought in "Turkish delight" (lime jello with powdered sugar. I swore that it was a real food and that it did not include lime jello. The teachers kept telling me that I was wrong and said that it was a fake food. I kept the argument up, but they kept telling me it was imaginary. I may have argued with teachers a bit too much through elementary and middle school. That summer I went to Seattle with my family and I found Turkish delight at some stall in Pikes Place market. AAAHH sweet vindication! My parents didn't get why I was so excited about it.
ps. I actually am not a big fan of the stuff. I had some when I was in Ireland and I wasn't impressed.
Drinking the water abroad--bottled or tap?
I think that each country has its own bacteria so there will be some adjustment depending on where you go. For most developed countries you are probably fine drinking the water, but there might be an adjustment period when your body has to change to that area's bacteria. If you are only in a place I wouldn't risk it since the bacterial transition could ruin your vacation. If your there for an extended stay you might as well adjust to tap so that it costs less.
I studied abroad in Ireland and drank tap the whole time. I did have to adjust, the first week was a bit uncomfortable, but the money I saved was worth it. Keep on the look out for local notices of water sanitation, I did have some friends who didn't get a notice about water issues during a trip to Galway and got a NASTY bug. They avoided tap from then on.
The perfect BLT
What about onions?!!
I love onions on my BLT it is a requirement.
My preferred BLT is
Whole grain, lightly toasted
Avocado
Lots of Bacon
Tomato from my Garden
Onion
Leaf Lettuce
Maybe a little Mayo, not required if there is Avocado, if not, then it is.
Salt and pepper on the veg.
YUM
Exploding Banana Head Performance Art
Bananas must die!!!
Restaurant Week in DC
I went to Zaytinya and it was great! I am soooo happy they ran out of mussels because I got the best calamari ever subbed in instead.
Berger Cookies
I would reccomend ordering them, or making a special trip to buy some. They used to only be for sale in Highs dairy stores or from Bergers themselves.
popsicles, drumsticks, and ice cream sandwiches... oh my!
Snoball! Or maybe a getati from Rita's, but I tend to go for icy when its really hot outside. I am also a big fan of the Drumstick when picking Icecream.
Your food dislikes -- items or categories or methods or recipes?
I have a passionate hatred of bananas, in any form or even tiny bit of the flavor. The smell even makes me nauseous. GROSS. Its not a texture thing for me I eat plenty of wierd stuff but bananas make me gag. I am also not a fan of rasins. So two of the childhood go-to healthy snacks were out of the question for me.
Not a big fan of excessive mayo/sour cream that sort of thing and I can't eat yogurt from one of those diet fruity things. I love yogurt in savory things and enjoy frozen yogurt, but not the sweet refigerated kind yech!
I have issues with overcooked veggies and actually prefer many raw, but I am usually willing to try them. I'm still not a fan of cooked peas or lima beans, but I love to eat raw peas from the garden. Also not a big fan of the sweet+meat idea, maple bacon?- not so much. I also dont like pineaple and ham, but I can usually pick around it. I still try that kind of stuff, its just not my thing.
Other than these few things I am a quite adventerous eater and will try pretty much anything, as long as there are no bananas involved.
PB&J or Grilled Cheese?
Grilled Cheese all the way. I LOVE cheese!
Cook the Book: 'The Food Life'
Millers Market. My friends dad does the sausage and it is amazing. I can also get the chicken corn chowder that is usually only avaliable at the Firehall during carnival season, or when someones Grandma makes it. YUM!
Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine
Apple Dumplings, Corn Chowder, Sausage, Whoopie Pies, Pretzels, and Shoo-fly pie. I am from not too far from there and the baked goods are always amazing at Amish Markets. The corn chowder is a personal favorite, but in general you are in for a lot of delicious comfort foods.
Cook the Book: Serves One
As someone who just got a 1st apartment I cook for one a lot. I tend to throw a bunch of veggies into a pan and make some sort of stir fry. I put it over rice, bulghur, noodles, pasta, or whatever else is around. The sauce varies, but this is the basic formula. Tonight it's pesto and zuchinni over some bulghur.
Fennel?
Hoooray Fennel!
My favorite way to eat it is in a salad. Slice it thin, mix with some thin sliced onion. For the dressing Lemon juice, salt, crushed garlic and olive oil. Mix and taste until it seems right to you. This is a really simple way to eat it. I've added cheese, cucumbers, radishes, and other things but the basic recipie is great.
You could also roast it or put it into a tomato based stew.
Whats Your Banana IQ?
Bananas are evil! I get nauseous at the scent of them and they really gross me out. I don't understand why they are so popular. EWWWW. I was stuck in the car with someone eating a banana yesterday and I thought I was gonna hurl.
Muffins!
Martha Stewart makes an awesome muffin with a struedel topping. I guess google the recipie? I've fiddled around with it and I add lemon zest and blueberries to the muffin and then drizzle a lemon glaze over the top.
Prosciutto shank?
I use them to make kale/collard greens. Just toss it in the pot and let it simmer. Sometimes you can get some good slices off of it to nibble on and then just throw the rest in the pot. If it is dried out it is alot easier to get meat off once you simmer it for a while. Its also fun to gnaw on the bone when no one is watching. :)
- I got mine at a cheese shop for 99cents
I heart mustard..do you?
I eat dijon straight off of a spoon. mmmm...
Kebabs: What's Your Favorite?
Doner Kebabs! OMG
These glorious creations are what gets you through a drunken night in Europe. MMMM! I just read a review of a place near me that supposedly has them, but I am skeptical. Most places here (US) stick with meat chunks on a stick intsead of the doner formula(gyroish w/ WAY better sauces.
Oh and on an unrelated note, even if I soak my skewers they always seem to burn, so metal are my favorite.
I heart mustard..do you?
Is there anyone that can give me ways to USE Chinese hot mustard? I don't want to just dip my egg rolls in it. I love the flavor, so want to stick it in some recipes...maybe slow cook some pork? Thank you for any suggestions.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I want to share what a friend of mine is doing.
She read somewhere that the average Middle Class Person in India only spends USD 2.50 a day on food, and the poor & poverty stricken spend much, much less.
It got her thinking about how much abundance we have & that while our grocery budgets may be stretched to the limit at times (especially now), we are still better off than most in the world.
Her goal for Lent, is to feed her family of 4 as frugally as possible without sacrificing nutrition. Because she maintains a monthly grocery budget, it was easy for her to prorate what they would spend daily.
Each day she creates a menu/dietary plan to come in under that daily budget, and the excess goes into a rolling bank. She & her family have yardstick to see daily how they are doing.
At the end of Lent, she is going to donate the money they save to a food assistance oriented charity.
While she realizes this will not produce giant sums of money, it is an exercise for her family to stop and take pause. She's been blogging her progress, what they eat, and the sum in the bank for charity. I can tell you from reading it, they are eating well but frugally (and thoughtfully).
Whatever amount they end up donating, it will have come not from their excess....but rather from their sacrifice.
When it comes to Lent or any religious practice, you can take or leave it, regardless of your own beliefs. Regardless of the reasons, I think my friend is teaching her two daughters a wonderful lesson...to be both grateful and thankful for our relative abundance of food....and to be charitable to others even to the point of sacrifice.
It's a better Lenten exercise than using no meat on Friday as an excuse to grab a .99 fish filet or hit red lobster for all you can eat shrimp!
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I've given up alcohol and I'm not finding it easy, and its only been 3 days. I only have a drink a night, but I think I got used to it. I think this will be good for me in the long run. This is my first time giving up something for lent (besides green vegetables as a kid).

Watermelon and strawberries!
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I give up sugar.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I'm giving up caffeine. I work at Starbucks. This is gonna be interesting. :D
I'm Presbyterian, so it's not mandatory for me, but it's a good form of self-discipline and preparation for Holy Week. I also think it's a form of countercultural action, since we live in a society that thrives on consumption and instant gratification; it's a way of saying, no, I don't always have to have what I want when I want it. I don't have to let my desires control me, but instead be ruled by the Lord.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
My religious affiliation does not follow Lent, but here's a funny exchange between my children and I last night:
8 year old Daughter: "Mummy do you know what lint is?"
Me: "Lint? You mean like dust?"
D: "No, like where you put ashes on your face and have to give something up for a while?"
Me: "Oh, you mean Lent?"
D: "yeah, Lent. Madison is giving up fried foods."
10 year old son: "You have to give up fried foods?!"
Me: "or something else that is special to you, like chocolate."
Son: "Oooh. Well it's a good thing I'm not Catholic. I'd totally fail at that."
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
Diet Coke...I've been drinking way too much. Actually, all sodas are off limits for lent this year.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
Another heathen in the house, I'll be enjoying all my usuals, although I did unwittingly give up my paczki this year because I was sick :( First time in over a decade I haven't had one. I feel as though I have sinned!
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
My fiance has decided to give up eating between meals because we are big snackers... being its Girl Scout cookie time, i try to explain to him that just because he eats the whole box of thin mints "for lunch" doesnt make it any better than eating it between meals...
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
When I was single, every year I declared I would give up abstinence for Lent.
Now that I've been not single for three years I think I'll give up...
doughnuts?
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I am giving up chocolate... sigh... however, like Perky said, "it's a small sacrifice to pay for Jesus' sacrifice for me." Well said, Perky! Oh yeah, and my family is giving up meat on Fridays.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
@Luby26 ~ hang in there. I gave them up 6 months ago, after smoking for 41 years.
I'm living in a Catholic household and I'm not Catholic, but I am a believer. I will fast and give up meat on Fridays. I will not smoke, which is a daily decision. Sometimes hourly. It's a small sacrifice to pay for Jesus' sacrifice for me.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
Last year I gave up alcochol. This year I am also ditching the cancer sticks. I think if I can make it forty days I'll just stick with it and hopefully be a non-smoker for good.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
Adam, how could you give up pizza--would Slice just have a little picture of Slice Dude with a halo for 40 days?
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
Sausage and bacon...two divine creations that will cause serious heartache, though the side benefit may be less heartburn.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I was originally going to give up pizza, but I don't eat pizza every day. So I'm going with soda—Coke, Diet Coke, Dr Pepper, etc. That will be harder for me than pizza, I'm afraid.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I'm giving up religion.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
While I was at Oxford, I gave up kebab van food for Lent one year. Worst month and a half ever. The next year? No such commitment.
Moibec's statement about *adding* positive behavior is also right on. I'm making a positive attempt to exercise more and to eat more greens.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
I am not a religious person, and neither is anyone else I know that gives up something for Lent. The idea of giving up something for forty days is much more appealing than making a New Year's resolution, which I never do. This year I am giving up burgers, as well as all fast food. (Burgers will be most difficult, because the restaurant in which I work makes fabulous medium rare burgers covered in manchego...yum.) It will be a difficult forty days, but I plan on rewarding myself at Flip when my time is up, so it won't be all bad.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
When I was 16, my mom asked me what I was giving up for lent, and I said "Catholicism!"
Which made her shake her eyes at me disapprovingly.
That was 18 years ago, since then, every year when she asks what I'm giving up for Lent, I say "Brussel Sprouts".
She says "You say that every year, and you don't even like brussel sprouts".
Usually I laugh and change the topic but when I'm feeling argumentative, I say something like, "You remember when I was 14 and I gave up Salt for lent, and liked it so much that I still don't eat salt? Same thing happened when I was 16 and I gave up Catholicism... And my new religion requires an annual affirmation of my distaste for Brussel Sprouts"
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
Nope, atheism/Freethought FTW.
Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?
McDonald's sugar-free iced coffee.
