Snapshots from Italy: Artisan Gelato at Bologna's Cremeria Funivia
Wow... My favorite gelateria in Nice, France was on a little street corner, the locals knew only by the numbers of turns they made on the cobblestone streets. No one seemed to know it by name but everyone was greeted like family. This article brings me right back... yum! :P

it's better than castiglione, gelatauro (which isn't all it's hyped up to be, imo) and gianni by far. the pistacchio was actually really good, the strawberry was amaaazing and full of real fruit pieces and such rich flavor, and my favorite flavor was tortina di funavia, which was basically a coldstone-ish mix of chocolate gelato with pieces of chocolate cake (hence, tortino). AMAZING, you have to get that as at least one of your flavors! plus fun fact: they put liquid-y chocolate in the bottom of your cestino/cup if you get the "alice" flavor (mascarpone and something else). i live about 2 minutes away while i'm abroad for the semester and it's pretty dangerous for my waistline...but so worth it! go sit in the little courtyard in piazza cavour afterward with friends :)

Robyn, it's pretty new... I don't have an exact opening date, but my boyfriend lived in Bologna through December '07 and said it had opened since then. So don't beat yourself up!

Ahh, this makes me even MORE jealous of my boyfriend who is visiting his brother in Italy in a couple weeks. If only he could bring this gelato home...

this is a strange coincidence: i'm spending the semester studying in bologna and i just tried cremeria funivia for the first time yesterday! i agree that it is delicious gelato, and the flavors are quite creative. I had the amarenata and the tortino funivia, which created an intensely flavorful combination of nutty chocolate and tart cherry - pretty perfect. and the fact that you can eat your gelato in piazza cavour is a huge bonus. however: the best gelato in bologna is, to me, gelatauro on via san vitale. their gelato is transcendental, as are their pastries and their espresso drinks and pretty much everything else that comes out of that magical kitchen. gelatauro is closed on mondays, so that's a good day to take advantage of the other gelato places in bologna, like this one. Castiglione is pretty good, too, but don't waste your time with Gianni. Buon appetito!

Where did you go in Rome that wasn't as good? Giolitti is the second best gelato I've ever eaten! (The best was a gelato World Champion winning shop in San Gimignano)

I loved Gelateria Gianni and La Sorbetteria Castiglione, but if this one's even better..... MUST RETURN TO BOLOGNA, STAT.
