My favorite potato dish is my grandmother's oven fried potato. She cuts it up in cubes, tosses them in olive oil and roasts them in the oven at a fairly hight temp (400 F or higher). I have never made french fries any other way.

Potatoes au gratin are also majorly yummy

I am going to have to try those Patrician potatoes

Chick-fil-A's Spicy Chicken Sandwich

I am a huge fan of Chick-fil-A. The people who works there are generally super nice. Some locations have people who come by and give you a mint and ask if you need a drink refill. Super sweet

That being said, their spicy sandwich did taste a little bit on the fake side. I think I might stick with the regular, but maybe I'll try the spicy one again.

Tried anything new recently?

@Duncan When I visit my dad's relatives in Venezuela, we hit up a nearby fruit juice store where they drill holes in a coconut and you use a straw to drink in the water. Absolutely delicious! And totally puts you in vacation mode!

However I did try canned coconut water from the local grocery store and found it to be tasty as well, though not quite like the real thing (maybe it's the fun factor of holding a huge coconut in your hand that's missing)

McDonald's May Be Sued by Nutrition Watchdog Over Happy Meal Toys

I love how all of the sudden this has turned into an anti-government, oh look here comes big brother thread. Did I wander over to CNN.com?

I think toad3000 and eatgirl said it best--- While I do not necessarily want the government outright banning toys, I do think McD's has a responsibility to not market as blatantly to children as they currently do. They cannot process advertising the way we do, and thus are swayed much more easily.

Ultimately it is up to the parents to say no, and they have a huge responsibility to do so, but I can easily see an overwhelmed parent giving in and going to McD's anyway. To me there is a difference between banning something outright and encouraging healthier behaviors (ie smoking is legal, but many public health measures discourage it). Such advertising encourages unhealthy habits on those who are most vulnerable.

I doubt the courts will rule in favor of CSPI (and I hope they don't), but I don't think they are imbeciles, just an advocacy group doing their best. If this lawsuit encourages McDs to change their ways, CSPI will effectively win.

Road trip from Ohio to Ukiah, CA taking route 80

Happy Sumo in Salt Lake City is actually quite good, in a "why am I eating seafood in the mountains, and how can it possibly be so good" kind of way. It's in the Gateway, a quasi-new-urbanist-type development they built around olympics time that's actually kinda fun to walk around. Old Town Sacramento is also worthwhile in an expensive-touristy way and has some good food.

Good side dishes for Spanish tortilla?

how about some ham, chorizo or other cured meats? Spaniards do love their cured meats. We would eat tortillas at my grandmother's house with ham, cheese, and crusty bread.

Another good choice might be sauteed mushrooms with garlic?

Though the veggie idea sounds terrific too, and far healthier...

Yum!

@tannertheblog- I went to college in Houston and I can tell you not to miss the stereotypical college kid hangouts like House of Pies and Taco Cabana (visit these places after 10 pm, though). As far as pizza goes, follow carrie's recommendations. BTW Kenneally's is not very good. Star Pizza is

btw are you going to Rice?

Food Network's New Cooking Channel, Coming Soon...thoughts?

The one competition show I like on FN is Iron Chef America. I love seeing the creative process these amazing chefs go through and how they do one ingredient in so many different, creative ways. The other shows are not that exciting. I really don't want to watch somebody make a sculpture out of food.

I'm excited to see some more cooking shows on TV in the vein of Ina, Alton, even Rachael, so I will certainly be checking the shows on CC out =) This is why I love FN on Saturday and Sunday mornings since it's pretty much all cooking shows then.

Salt: 'It's Basically Cocaine for the Palate'

Yes, the science linking high salt intake to raised blood pressure may be a bit murky, but it doesn't change the fact that water reabsorption in your kidneys is partially governed by the sodium concentration in you blood. The more sodium in your blood = more water reabsorbed by the kidneys= higher blood pressure. This is why ACE inhibitors work since they block the hormonal pathway responsible for this. Granted some people's systems are better at handling sodium than others.

I guess it's better to be safe than sorry and not eat too much processed food =)
