Actually, Slow Food generally supports such practices. The catch is that cost is different from price. Industrial food has a low price, but has huge (externalized) costs. Slow food has a higher price which reflects the "true" cost. Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma is probably the most familiar recent book to outline this...
