Good call, sailordave.
Calling her a "stroked out old lady" was tacky, to say the least.

I like the new Ruth Reichl show, Adventures with Ruth.
And Eric Ripert's new show.
Hubert Keller drives me crazy though... He needs to edit the words "really", "actually", and "nice" from his vocabulary.
REALLY. Actually, really. That would be nice. :)

I just wish they wouldn't keep showing the same repeats of all the other shows.

I found Spain..on the Road Again to be obnoxiously pretentious and unwatchable, and this from somebody who LOVES Mario and Bittman.

FN Chefs - ignoring food sanitation

Ha, that one guy on Chopped that double-dipped thru EVERY challenge, even after the judges called him on it! You could tell it was totally habitual, I wonder how much his business has suffered after that episode aired? I would not eat in his restaurant.

And @ deetroit, that sweating into the food thing is truly disgusting.
Plus half the time they never cover or tie back their hair - there was that one guy on Chopped that kept wiping his hair back from his face ( while he dripped sweat into the food ) and sure enough, his hair ended up on the plate.

eeeewwwwwwww

Weekend Cook and Tell Round Up: Vintage Recipe Redux

dang it!!

Wish I'd been here last week to share my Mom's "hametti" recipe...

a casserole with ham, mushrooms, tomato sauce and spaghetti, that I was actually quite fond of.

From the 70's, of course.

From Talk

what food do you miss from childhood ?

@honeybumper: you mean those Jolly Rancher candy sticks?
I totally loved the watermelon and the green apple ones.

I miss my Grandma's home made dinner rolls the most, though.
We never got her to write down a recipe, and try as I might, I just can't duplicate hers.

The "tip line"

I was just wondering about the tipping for takeout thing the other day. I usually only tip if it's delivered, but I frequent the same thai restaurant for pick-up takeout and wondered whether I should tip since they have great food and are always friendly.

I wouldn't tip for buying a bag of bagels, only if someone was preparing them for me.

$29.95 for America's Test Kitchen website?

I thought I was the only one who'd had terrible customer service from CI!
Originally I signed up for a free issue, then returned the bill marked cancelled (which their free trial said was ok); they continued to bill me for a year and threatened to send me to collections even though I never received more than the first issue! And I could never get through to a live human in custoner service.

I do like ATK, and have bought their annual cookbooks for the past 5 years, and they are some of my favorite, go-to cookbooks. Somehow I got on the "we'll send you a free 20 day trial" and always end up keeping them. However, I have also received promo phone calls where they are trying to send me books I have already bought.

As for the cost of the websites, it is completely ridiculous and insulting to their subscribers. I like Fine Cooking much better, and their website is free of charge.

Serious Efforts: Planting a Deck Veggie Garden

@bananamonkey, cilantro and parsley both tend to "bolt" (go to seed.)
The best way to ensure an ongoing supply is to reseed every 6-8 weeks or so, more often as the weather gets warmer.

As far as juliebug's tomatoes go, the bigger the container, the better. Half barrels are good for a single plant. Also you can increase your yield by using red mulch, check out Gardener's Supply Catalog for that and lots of other great tomato growing ideas.

What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?

Interesting to read everybody's favorites. It makes me realize I usually buy the same things at TJ's, and makes me want to try new things

My staples:
Their cheese/nut selection can't be beat, pricewise.
the tarte d'alsace
the bruschetta in the fridge section; who knew refrigerated tomatoes could be so good? Great mixed into pasta/risotto/panzanella as well as on bread.
Oh, the bread/cereal selection is pretty great as well.
Orchids. Flowers. Plants.
The canned kalamata olives. Better than the jarred, IMO.
The frozen enchiladas, gyozas.
Niman ranch bacon and (sometimes) pork chops
Fage yogurt and their butter/cream,etc. Altho I don't buy eggs at TJs

My only beef with them is that you get used to a product and then it just disappears off their shelves; eg, Muir Glen canned tomatoes.

Fennel v. Endive

Endive is perfectly awesome when sliced, browned, and then slow braised in the oven with a little stock or water. Check out Molly Stevens recipe in "All about Braising"
It will make converts of you endive haters :)

Create is great and yes, the ads are horrifying. Most of the cooking shows are good but sometimes they have that Christina woman and her healthy food and I can't stand her! I can't stand to be lectured and I can't stand to be talked down to and when I watch her, that's what I feel like she's doing.

I have never been able to watch Nancy sew for reasons that have nothing to do with her face - she just bores the pants off me. I'm pretty sure she's not "stroked-out" because whatever is wrong with her face has been going on for years and years but it has gotten much worse. Honestly, when I first saw her I thought it was my imagination because it was so subtle. Then recently I saw how much it's progressed and felt bad for her.
