A Year Later, FDA Proposes Menu Labeling Requirements

How can people do research if the information is not available? Do you think the information would be available out of free will from restaurants, especially with fast food restaurants? To me, it doesn't matter where the calories or ingredients are posted as long as it's there. My Burger King has the ingredients and nutrition posted in the back next to the bathrooms as well as online and the Yoshinoya has calorie posts directly on the menu.

And with the way many people don't know where their food comes from, what's in their food and its nutrition, and the way many people don't want to know... yeah, there are a lot of people who live in supposed blissful ignorance. In fact, many companies, restaurants and others, depend on people's ignorance. That's how many make business.

Also, every business is in financial trouble especially from the recession. I don't understand why restaurants with practically guaranteed business and 20+ locations should get my sympathy. If your food taste good, is made with quality ingredients and skill (or at the very least is not McDonald's and has some semblance of actual food and effort), no amount of putting up calories, shoving ingredients lists in my face and politicians holding my hand as I order is gonna change my mind. Put the calories up on the menu or somewhere within reasonable reach, as long as people can see it and decide what they want to do about it. It is just like all the information you ever get in life from tv, school, stores, etc: there is nothing wrong with informing people about things and people should be informed as much as possible; people's individual responsibility comes from what they do with the information.

Oh yeah, the government is definitely imposing nanny-state policies onto my choices. Yeah, look at them, trying to help customers who care try to make a more informed choice about what's in their food and how nutritious it is. Damn them for allowing me and many others to face the reality of what is in our food, whether we decide to do anything about it or not. What's next, requiring food companies to put ingredient lists and nutritional information to ensure that my ketchup has real tomatoes in it instead of pumpkin? Giving customers like me adequate resources (not forcing me to look into those sources) so I can't live in this "ignorance is bliss" state that everyone believes is better for us? Bah! /end sarcasm

I know we are in this state of anal paranoia where anything the government does makes people yell "SOCIALISM!!!1111" but even with that, I fully support this. I care more about the quality of the ingredients and skill rather than calories (I hate math), but I think this is great, especially since this is ONLY for places with 20+ locations. No mom and pop shops will be affected. Please give mom and pop places more credit, many of them are not operating on shoe string budgets and are very successful, even if they don't have 20+ locations. Plus since they are small, they are more likely to give a s@%$ about what goes into the food and have more skill (not guaranteed of course, but better). It is the fast food and big 20+ restaurants that I worry about because many of them (not all) are lax on quality, nutrition and skill.

And you may see the calories, but you don't have to care. Even so, people are using the "since we don't care, why should it be there" excuse. So you'll be fine with it is it does something? The only way to guarantee the calorie posts will do something is if the government forces you to follow them, which no one wants. Just because it doesn't matter to you doesn't mean it doesn't matter to everybody. Put it up and let people decide for themselves if they will act on the information they receive.

Cakespy: Easter Candy Dessert Taco Plate

Meh, it looks OK. I mean, it is basically a semi-homemade Choco Taco with custom fix'ins. But as a fellow DIY Desert-er, I'm not up for the excess sugar, extremely processed chocolate and artificial colors. My baked good ingredients are already processed and sugary enough without it.

A good combination would be the homemade taco shells with good vanilla ice, homemade caramel sauce or dulce de leche, folded and dipped in melted chocolate.

Or a tiramisu version with taco shell painted with coffee on the inside, coffee or vanilla ice cream and shaved dark chocolate. Maybe with a mascarpone layer inside also.

Or if we are going on the Easter theme, i would go with shaved mint chocolate instead of fake green coconut or even some julienned mint leaves.

And the "side" would be something to counteract the sweetness of the taco, maybe something salty or tart. I'm thinking maybe a tart strawberry or mango "salsa" or a different kind of pudding.

I liked the cookie cake pie, but after awhile and after people told me they can only eat one slice, the novelty of the over-sweetness wore off. I assume the same will go with this one. i understand that she has an artistic thing going on, but I'd prefer if she was more artistic with the taste as well as looks. Processed chocolate eggs and jelly beans are good and sweet, but it's safe. Mixing it up and making the stuff from scratch (like the shell) is much more fun.

People can have "headquarters" where they prep ahead of time. There are plenty of vendors, both mobile and non, some that I've seen make the skins and fillings for dumplings, sandwiches, greek food, baked goods in front of me from scratch (hmm dumplings). I'm not saying whether this truck's dim sum is fresh or frozen, but I'm gonna do the more logical thing and not make assumptions before I can see for myself.

Asian Turkey Burger with Sriracha Mayo: A Turkey Burger That Doesn't Suck

I might be the only one like this, but there is a turkey burger that is served in the dining hall in my college and it is literally the best turkey burger I have ever had! It was juicy, flavorful, looked like real meat, a little crispy on the outside. I dunno, maybe its the dark meat or they but something in it or doused it in fat, but I prefer that turkey burger over the beef burger in the dining hall any day and this dining hall is farther away from me. I know since turkey is lean it is supposed to be dry, but the two times and two different turkey burgers I've tried in my life were amazing. I don't know what was in them, but they tasted distinct compared to the beef burgers I've tried. I love being unconventional lol. I'd love to try the mayo also.

Why Ben & Jerry's Relationship with Walmart Is Actually Good For the Future of Food

I guess my family doesn't count as what m.c.f calls poor people huh? People have lost their jobs and are losing homes? Yeah, please don't treat us like we're idiots: all of us have been affected by the bad economy and do not live under a rock not knowing that poor people exist. Of course we know that. My father lost his job and is in risk of losing the one he has again. My family has always been low income. But it is false to say that poor people -can't- act on a cause and therefore -need- Walmart's prices. That's just like saying poor people can't be healthy and -need- to settle for possessed food (which is a bunch of crock). Hmm, come to think of it, what poor person buys Ben n Jerry's when they can make it themselves for much cheaper or buy bigger containers of ice cream for less? Anyway...

Poor people can save money and go local, organic or "Green"- it's already been done by being frugal. You can't keep shooting down everyone's solutions just because they don't work for you. There is more to cheap clothes than Walmart and $15 organic t-shirts. If you can't afford to do it, then don't do it. Poor people aren't being attacked here; morals and public awareness does not equal rich. I sure as heck not. But for the people that can, they want to do something about it and obviously, one of the best ways to do it is through your wallet.

It's really funny how many ways poor people deal with certain things. It depends on the person and where they are. Many of my parent's friends grow vegetables and fruit in garden and around their apartment. My family has managed to both buy from friends and grow organic produce and for -very- cheap. I don't ever want to go back to bland tomatoes ever again. And you can't possibly tell me that you can't get cheaper clothes from yard sales or thrift stores. If your poor, you are not going to be choosy most of the time. Many family friends have managed to stay off stores for good that way and save a lot of money.

If poor people have managed to stay off Walmart, then that means they have options and that means they don't -have- to settle. Sometimes they're better off. And I'm more worried about the sweatshops in the U.S. that employ illegal immigrants and pay them well under minimum wage under threat of deportation and harsh conditions, as well as circumstances that pit certain groups against each other so they don't collaborate. Buying from thrift stores and yard sales has definitely prevented me from supporting companies with those practices and I'm damn proud of it.

What food makes you excited?

Pumpkin Cheesecake. When I think I can actually eat it. It's a once-a-blue-moon food since it's expensive pre-made and I never tried to make it. But just thinking about being able to eat it makes me salivate.

Anything "new". I am an adventurous eater and love to try new things. Y'all can keep your plain jane vanilla ice cream; I want the chocolate-covered almond coffee and Christmas Cookie flavors.

Any of my strange food craving moments. 2-3 weeks ago I craved cornbread; I wanted some so badly but I didn't want to buy pre-made mixes or ingredients for one time. I wasn't able to eat it for a week and a half before a friend happened to make some homemade cornbread for a club potluck of sorts. /Sigh I have good friends ;)

Quesadillas

The best version I've tried is roasted veggies (sliced zucchini, yellow squash and some other things) with I think mozzarella on a whole wheat tortilla. Why Ben & Jerry's Relationship with Walmart Is Actually Good For the Future of Food

No one "needs" to settle for Walmart's prices or anything. Same with any other company. Contrary to popular belief, you won't always go broke when going for organic or supporting other social causes through consumption, you know. You want cheap clothes that don't support companies that practice ill-treatment with their sweatshops, here's some options: go to thrift stores where clothes are often donated. The money goes to the store and depending on where you go, you can get great stuff. I will never spend $20+ on a shirt. Heck, I'd never spend $5 unless it's a good one at a thrift store and I have a friend that can "remodel" some of my clothes for free. Want organic food without breaking the bank? Grow your own along with buying from the store. There are many websites that give info on how to grow fruits and veggies indoors and out, in an apartment, etc. There are plenty of stores and national chains that treat their customers well and provide good prices. My family mostly buys bulk and goes to ethnic stores for food we normally can't buy in national chains anyway. And they have better sales without coupons haha.

Overall, do whatever you want and go with what you believe. It just so happens that my morals and beliefs coincide with what I normally do, what I've grown up with and what is practical. All I really care about is that people educate themselves and discuss the issues at hand. Some people can and will act on their knowledge and beliefs and some can't and won't. People can't afford or don't want to buy cage-free eggs from Walmart? Well, that's their schtick, Walmart can't control everyone. But I simply can't agree that Walmart's prices are "needed" when there are indeed, many and better options. And this is coming from a college student that hates and doesn't spend excessively.

Comforting Pizza Toppings

Medium crust pizza (there's one place I've tried in NY near my college that does it, everyone else does thin crust) with supreme if I can afford it. Sausage and pineapple is my staple. Pizza isn't really a comfort food for me as much as a once-or-twice-a-year treat. I'm like the rest of my family that doesn't eat pizza much unless we happen to have bread and cheese lying around. We make some pizza knock-offs ourselves then.

What is your worst cooking disaster?

It's funny how I haven't had a lot of disasters yet. It took me so long before I ever burned something and that was because the oven dials here don't have numbers and I'm stupid enough to still use them xD

But I think the worst for me and one that still kind of confuses me was the first time I tried to make homemade oreos. I followed the directions exactly and everything (I think) and even used an oven with numbers on the dial. The cookies spread into a thin, but brick-hard, eggy, and almost burnt layer that covered the cookie pan. I haven't tried to remake them yet, but I want to so I can be able to get it right again. I don't care that much to buy oreos :(

Why Ben & Jerry's Relationship with Walmart Is Actually Good For the Future of Food

Well it's a good thing I don't like BnJ or Baskin Robbins. The ice cream is way too sweet for me and too expensive. That allows me to continue being my "Hoity-Toity" self and continue educating myself on where my food comes from as well as supplement my passion for cooking :). Where I live in los Angeles, there actually isn't a Walmart near me, so I never had to go to one until college, and that was just to buy a cookie scoop.

Not everyone will care or can afford to support any social causes behind many products in the market. It just so happens to work for me: I like making my own food, it's cheaper to make my own food, financial aid helps so I hardly buy food at all and national chain stores are too far, so I usually buy from local businesses. Some day I will make my own Kit Kat bars so I can get more for my buck than the tiny bars they sell in the vending machines.

Overall, I appreciate business like Walmart going for the cage free eggs and the rBGH-free milk. It's pretty much a given that big corporations will only support certain causes if it gives them $$$. And they are a business and people want the artificially cheap costs of products, so they are giving people what they want. I normally don't go to Walmart for various reasons, but if companies will jump on the bandwagon for good causes, even for profit, I'm not going to be too picky.

What is your processed/junk food weakness?

Kit Kat Bars!! I once bought $10 worth from a vending machine during finals. It wasn't enough...

Canned ham and corned beef. No, not SPAM but actual good canned ham (oxymoron I know). And new zealand or filippino corned beef (mmm oily).

I'm one of those people that wouldn't turn away most food, but if I were to buy anything, I would most likely make it myself. With the exception of some things like kit kat, crackers and canned ham, most processed food taste nasty to me.

From Talk

What can I do with canned ham?

Is this canned ham better quality than SPAM? Cause, I have tried canned ham that is not the squishy mess that is SPAM, but good ham, just with sodium nitrate haha. If anything, you can slice it, fry both sides in a hot pan with some oil and serve with white rice, scrambled eggs, and fried onions and tomatoes. That's the stuff I used to love eating before I had to buy the ham on my own and it was expensive.
