How to Make Patbingsu (Korean Shaved Ice)

@princexy, I'm totally with you! I'm a non-mixer myself-- believe me when I say we exist, Grace! I like choosing what I get in each bite (much like a chipotle burrito bowl) and think the slushy grey post-mix look is quite unappetizing.

End-Of-Day Discounts in New York

Fatwitch in Chelsea Market has their "witching hour" from 5-7 PM (I believe) when any unwrapped brownie is 50% off. Warning-- they're decadently rich.

Omitting Soda Pop

I am very much in the anti-soda camp. I understand that many people love soda for various reasons but I just can't support the one-can-a-day habit many of my friends have. Maybe because I have such a strong aversion to both regular and diet soda but I cringe watching my loved ones down soda so easily and regularly. The carbonation hurts my mouth and I am completely turned off by the chemical taste I always pick up on, especially with diet sodas. I will have maybe one coke a year if I'm craving it for some strange reason, but I'm completely happy with my clean and healthy water whenever I'm thirsty!

All You Need to Know About Di Fara, 2009

I had my first Di Fara experience a couple of months ago (pre-$5 slice) and went on a weekday afternoon around 3 PM (I believe it was a Tuesday or Wednesday). There was no line. My friend and I walked right up to the counter, ordered a full pie, and enjoyed it at one of the tables within 20 minutes.

Would You Go to a Chain Restaurant on a First Date?

If you live in a big city where quirky, unique restaurants surround you, I'd say shame on you for choosing a chain restaurant for a first date. It wouldn't take much effort to research someplace more interesting than a TGIFriday's.

For those in more rural areas or places with limited options, I think a chain restaurant would be much more acceptable. Definitely not in New York though, I hope!!

Mixed Review: No Pudge! Brownies

In Videos: Asparagus (A Stalk-umentary)

I caught this film at the Food for Thought Film Festival in NYC this past weekend and loved it! I never thought I would get so into asparagus but it really was a fascinating look at the politics behind the vegetable and Oceana, the self-proclaimed "Asparagus Capitol of the World." I'd highly recommend it if they are ever showing it in your area.

The movie also showed me there is an endless bounty of asparagus paraphernalia-- stainless steel asparagus sink stop, anyone??

Looking for a really good Vietnamese restaurant...

I think Pho Bang on Mott St. can hold it's own. I've gone with several Vietnamese friends and they enjoy the pho, as well as the rice and vermicelli dishes. Only problem is that like many Chinatown establishments, service is nonexistent.

Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company: Home of the Pizza Pot Pie

I tried this place out when I was a poor intern in Chicago and had the same experience-- enjoyed it for the novelty but was underwhelmed by the actual pizza as well as the hour-long wait. I was also skeptical and surprised that the owner could remember the order of waiting parties with no names-- definitely a talent.

Apparently the thing to order is the Mediterranean bread. Next time I'm in the windy city I'm planning to give this place another try during off-peak times.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Uptown Edition

I have this recent fetish for a type of chocolate chip cookie I know exists but can't find - it's slightly dome-shaped with a rather crisp top and not very chewy inside. I think they must be rather gourmet-ish instead of intended for the supermarket crowd. Anyone know where I can find some of these? Thanks!

it boggles my mind to think of all these new places that have opened since we left NYC. Fairway and Citarella are the exceptions because I used to walk down Broadway two or three times a week to shop there - that was before the Fairway Restaurant existed and when Citarella was only a fish market. albeit the best around. I've read about Levain's chocolate chip cookie and think I have the recipe somewhere in my clutter - have to try and dig it out and give it a try.

From Serious Eats: New York

Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Uptown Edition

I agree with the assessment on Levain. I've been there a number of times and while I love the quality of ingredients and the flavor, I've twice gotten what I feel is undercooked dough in the middle. If I want THAT, I'll make my own at home and lick the spoon! Bigger isn't always better. I do go back from time to time, hoping that I'll get one that is crispy on the outside and cooked through just enough inside. Occasionally, I am delighted.

you should try whole foods cookies the smaller ones that come in big circular packages. not exactly sexy but darn good....but i have a feeling that city bakery /bird bath is ultimately going to take the cake!
