My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

I marinate my turkey in soy sauce, sparkling apple cider, season salt, and black pepper so it has this wonderful sweet-savory flavor and the meat is so juicy it falls off the bone. I especially love the skin, neck, and tail.

I also love the stuffing which consists of bread crumbs, dried sage, apple, almonds, and onions.

For dessert my family and I forgo the pies and cakes and have a Filipino-style fruit salad, which is basically canned fruit cocktail mixed with Nestle cream, condensed milk, young coconut, and pineapple gel. It's a light and refreshing way to end a heavy meal.

The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made

A sauce made with sliced breakfast sausages, cream of chicken soup, Hellman's mayonnaise, lemon juice, ground pepper, broccoli, shredded aged cheddar on top and served over pasta or rice. The sauce smells vile but it actually tastes delicious and I would even go so far as call it comfort food. I often find myself craving this sauce during winter.

They carry ________ but not _________?!

My grocery store stocks wines from all over the world-Italy, Spain, Chile, Australia, etc. but won't carry Xaoxing wine because it's illegal here (I live in Montreal). I don't know what the reason behind it is but it's very frustrating because I cook a lot of Chinese dishes at home. So I usually have to resort to begging my relatives in Toronto to smuggle in some Xiaoxing wine in their luggage whenever they come to visit me.

I also want add Tony Bourdain to my list. I met him when he came to Montreal to promote his book and he was really nice. But I wouldn't hit on him either, his wife seems like b---- and would probably kick my ass. So I'm happy just admiring him from a distance...

From Talk

For the laddies- Hottest Food Network Dude?

Rob Rainford from Food Network Canada's "Licence to Grill". I'd love to drench bbq sauce all over him and eat him up! Mmmmhmmm...

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

I go out for Indian food because it's too labor intensive to prepare at home and most Indian dishes have a million ingredients which I almost never have in my pantry.

I also prefer to eat steaks at restaurants because I'm terrible at barbecuing and I always end up overcooking the meat.

From Talk

Do you have a recipe you won't share?

I won't share a recipe for a Filipino dessert my mom makes. It's these deep fried balls that have a soft, chewy interior with bits of coconut in the middle and drizzled in a brown sugar sauce that turns hard and crackly. It's quite addictive andusually the first thing to go at a party . People have begged, bargained, and pleaded for the recipe but I refuse to give it away because my mother will absolutely kill me and maybe someday I would like to market it and produce it for the masses after she dies :)

Eating Alone (In Restaurants)

I often dine out alone in casual and fine dining restaurants because most of my friends aren't interested in the restaurants I frequent.

I don't like eating at the bar so I usually ask for a table because I like to have a big space in front of me to spread out my books/newspaper and the multiple dishes I order throughout my meal.

Servers usually treat me the same as their other customers. Or sometimes they'll strike up a conversation with me to keep me company.

Other diners hardly notice me because they're so busy eating and chatting with their companions. But when I do get a curious glance in my direction, I don't let it bother me because I know I'm never going to see these people again.

Sometimes the advantage of being a solo diner is that I get seated quickly even without a reservation. Or I get to choose any table I want if the restaurant isn't too full.

For those people who are afraid of eating alone in a restaurant: JUST GET OVER IT BECAUSE IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD. Try it at least once and you'll see it's not that bad...

From Serious Eats

'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

I tend to make dishes that taste good to me but makes the rest of my family gag:

A fried egg mixed with steamed white rice and a teaspoon of Hellman's mayonnaise.

Spaghetti sauteed in olive oil, chopped garlic, anchovies, and crushed red peppers.

Sardines with mustard, rice vinegar, and hot sauce.

Fried liver and caramelized onions in a balsamic sauce.

From Talk

Favorite frozen entrees?

Lean Cuisine's Glazed Chicken w/ mushrooms, green beans & wild rice pilaf makes me feel less guilty about eating a frozen dinner.

When I'm too lazy (or broke) to make Indian food, I'll opt for President's Choice Indian Butter Chicken.

Guilty Food Pleasures

In public I have a reputation of being a health-conscious eater with sophisticated tastes. But in private, I'm actually a crap-eating junkie. Here's my list of sinful indulgences:

Chef Boyardee's Beefaroni with mozzarella
Kraft's powdered cheddar cheese
Ikea's Swedish Meatballs
Campbell's Condensed Mushroom Soup mixed with rice (I like to refer to it as a poor man's mushroom risotto, lol)
Hungry Man's Salisbury Steak dinner
McDonald's Sausage McGriddle, Big Mac, fries, and chocolate/vanilla soft serve ice cream
Burger King's deep fried apple pies
KFC's Original Fried Chicken, potato and macaroni salads, and honey roasted chicken (I first tasted it back in the 90s during a trip to Saratoga Springs. OMG, it was the best chicken from a fast food place ever. Are these still available in the U.S.???)
Jell-O Pudding
Pillsbury Chocolate Chip Cookies
any Pizza Hut pizza (love the greasy crust!)
Red Lobster (all the ones in Montreal closed over 20 years ago. I miss those garlic cheese biscuits!)
canned sardines with French's mustard
canned liver pate spread with Miracle Whip on white bread
Cherry Coke
and a Canadian product: McCain's Triple Chill desserts

Making Butter at Home

I made butter by accident the first time I made whip cream. I got a little too overzealous with my whisk and next thing I knew, the solids began separating from the liquid. At first I was disappointed that I ruined my whip cream but after getting a quick taste, I was quite impressed with myself that I made fresh, country-style butter without having to go to a dairy farm :)

What strange things are in the door of your fridge?

Given the fact that my family has moved back to RI from MI, and can't move into our new house 'til Friday (we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving on the weekend (boo hoo, sniff, sniff) so we're staying in a hotel suite. The only items on the door of the fridge here are Irish butter and some bottles of lemon Perrier.

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

@julea
I'm with you - all my friends know that I'll be bringing the "shape of the can" - it has become a minor competition to see who can dump the cranberry sauce out in perfect "can" shape. However, my favorite part is the other thing no one else I know likes but me - mincemeat pie.

From Talk

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

Stuffing(!), cranberry sauce-- don't hate me, I love the canned stuff--, pumpkin pie, pearl onions, and of course, a little turkey is mandatory.
Everything else is meh.

What I REALLY love is the leftover turkey/cranberry sauce sandwiches.
Godly.

From Talk

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

Another creative leftover suggestion: pumpernickel bread, cream cheese on bread, avocado, mashed and spread, thin slices of breast, stacked and lettuce. This was the best sandwich I ever had. LA, 1978 at some restaurant. They had named it The" Martha Raye" , after the actress.

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

My own favorite thing about Thanksgiving is seeing most of the people that I love. As the oldest sister of a family of eight children, it is the one day of the year that almost all of us are together, along with assorted friends and satellite family. We always eat at my youngest sister's house and last year there were forty-eight people there. There was a roast turkey, a deep-fried turkey, a whole ham, and a whole huge brisket, along with side dishes too numerous to mention. My personal favorite(s): GRAVY - made by me, and a strange creamed corn casserole that is very sweet and was actually my grandmother's original recipe. Oh yeah, I almost forget the praline pecan cheesecake. That's not too bad to end a huge meal with. Then we all play "Guitar Hero" after consuming immoderate amounts of wine and beer. Great! My favorite day of the year. PlanetChaos, the dog fart reminder is hilarious. Thanks for making me laugh on a Monday morning.

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

The crispy part of the stuffing smothered in hot gravey! And the perfect sandwhich after everyone goes home. The part I Don't look forward too is the Dog Farts...what part of "don't feed the dog" do people not understand?

From Talk

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

Creative left-overs--- A pizza crust, thin sliced turkey, cranberry sauce, peas, small slices of sweet potatoes, maybe a little bit of ham chunks and mozzarella cheese all over the top. - Bake and enjoy! Dave

From Talk

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

Oh geez, I can't even choose. Actually no, that's a lie. Hand's down, it's gotta be sweet potato casserole. My aunt makes THE BEST sweet potato casserole. It's equipped with marshmallow, pecans, and a buttload of buttah. (I specifically used the word buttload cause that's exactly where it goes...that's ok though. More to love)

From Talk

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

My family's meal is quite versatile; we always have more than one meat. For those not fond of turkey, we may do a ham and have even included barbecued ribs!

From Talk

What strange things are in the door of your fridge?

The usual assortment of American and Asian condiments, pickles, capers, sundried tomatoes and olives. A jar of yellow curry paste and a jar of Jamaican jerk seasoning.

Here's the one oddity: macapuno strings (I make a killer fruit salad of fresh strawberries, a drained can of lychee, and macapuno)

@WIGirl : Try this with your red curry paste. Fry about a tablespoon of paste in a skillet for a minute. Stir in a can of coconut milk and a can of water. Toss in a pound of chuck roast cut into 1 inch cubes. Simmer for about 45 minutes until the meat is done and the gravey thickens - watch that it doesn't get too dry. A simple substitute for Indonesian rendang. Serve over rice.

From Talk

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

Southern cornbread dressing with gravy and the requisite chocolate pie for dessert.

From Talk

@nightowl, are you suppossed to refrigerate tapioca? i have it in my pantry.

From Talk

What strange things are in the door of your fridge?

Fridge door inventory:

Butter saver shelf: carton of eggs, half a lime
Shelf 1: butter, ketchup, small cans of pineapple juice, a pineapple fruit cup, a bottle of fruit smoothie drink, 8 oz glass bottle of Dr Pepper
Shelf 2: spray margarine, peanut butter, sugar free strawberry preserves, bottled bbq sauce, tabasco, cream cheese, box of baking soda in a ziploc, cold brew coffee concentrate
Shelf 3: bottle of aloe vera infused lotion, bottle of sriracha, bottle of balsamic viniagrette, bottle of ranch dressing, bottle of Cristalino, sour mix
Shelf 4: chocolate syrup, sugar free chocolate syrup, hazelnut flavored syrup, 2 kinds of homemade bbq sauce, white vinegar, hummus, maraschino cherries, tapioca pearls

Some of this is undoubtedly completely weird.

From Talk

What strange things are in the door of your fridge?

I also have Dianas Spicy Southwest in my refrigerator! I brought it back from a trip to Nova Scotia.

When it comes to strange, hmmmm...strawberry vodka? Habanero Peach Preserves, szechuan salad dressing from the chinese market (I still have no idea what to do with it), yellow curry sauce, tandoor marinade, garlic scape pesto.

I also have a jar of Baconaise, not the stuff you have on the website, the packaged stuff not made with bacon.

Wasabi dressing from my trip to Vermont. I could go on and on...

French toast made from doughnuts, filled with ice cream and gingered mangos and topped with hot caramel sauce. Since I do not foresee making this again (blessedly my beau does not have a sweet tooth), no regrets for this one-time splurge.
