Would You Eat This Lobster?

I used to work at a lobster house on Long Island during college, and we would get these gigantic archaic lobsters from our distributor all the time. The first couple of times it was a bit of a novelty, having a 70 year old lobster around, but after the 4th or 5th time, the cool factor wore off. Since it takes a lobster about 7 years to reach one pound, even if you eat a 3 pounder, you are dining on a crustacean that is 20 years old, or so.

Serious Eats Is Bringing Hot Doug's to NYC October 7

Wow, I am sorry I read this post late! I have been savoring over those foie dogs and duck fat fries for years now. Looks like I will have to find some excuse to go visit old friends in Chicago and go to the real institution. Those pics are making me drool.

How to Cold-Brew Iced Coffee

For those not wanting to invest in the Toddy maker, you can use a regular old French press. I have been making iced coffee this way for years. Just put your mixture of coffee and water into the French press before you go to bed, then when you wake up it is ready to go! The press saves you the time and money of dealing with fussy filters/systems.

First Look at Citi Field Stadium Food

These food options sound great, but like others have said, when I go to a ball game, usually what I want is a nice hot dog, some peanuts, and a cold beer. I might splurge for a shake shack burger since I have been dying to try the place.

Here's a good tip for anyone who is a hot dog fiend at the ball park like me. Bring some water to a boil, toss in a couple of hot dogs to heat a little bit, then pour the contents into a thermos to bring to the park. This way you can enjoy 2-3 dogs without spending a fortune.

New Yankee Stadium's High-End Food Options

I remember when my Dad would take me to a ball game and a box seat was 20 dollars. Mind you this was in the late 80's and early 90's, but wow, America's past time sure has changed. My boyfriend and I are both employed and it is expensive for us to go out to a game, let alone if there were kids involved. The food options at Shea sound great, but I bet you they bang the fans $9 for a cone of Belgian fries on top of what the ticket costs. Highway robbery. I will go to one game to see the new stadium, but it is disheartening, to say the least.

Looks delicious - I must make a visit in the near future. When I eat meatball sandwiches, I prefer that the meatballs are cut in half to preserve the structural integrity.

There is nothing worse than trying to get your mouth around a gargantuan sandwich only to have all the fillings come spilling out the side. I am sure they will work out the kinks, though. I am really drooling over the prospect of blood orange lemonade!

Come on in 'The Kitchn'

I recreated this combination at home with a beef hot dog from the butcher and it was decent. I am not sure what Vienna Beef tastes like, does it have a casing? I like a nice snappy natural casing beef dog that is well seasoned. The combination of toppings, despite seeming like it was dreamed up by a twice-baked stoner, tasted pretty good. Would love to try an authentic version some day.

The Best Pies in America: The Serious Eats Pie Honor Roll

Add another vote for Petsi Pies. The owner, Renee, is one of the kindest individuals you will ever meet, all business aside. She just happens to make some of the finest baked goods in the area, as well. It is one of my personal joys to go to this shop and see what they have that day. My favorites are the peach blackberry pie in the summer, and the apple, pear, cranberry pie with walnut streusel topping in the fall. The menu changes with the season - I highly recommend visiting!

Dear Top Chef Contestant Richard Sweeney: That Is NOT a Slider

Really, I don't understand why everyone is so insistent on a slider being steamed. For me, the most important thing about a slider hamburger is the size. Like others have mentioned, if you can't eat it with one hand, its not a slider. Everything beyond that is interpretation of the chef. Grilled, steamed, griddled, I could care less as long as the end product tastes good.

Best Pizza in Boston?

Emma's crust is all wrong, it is wafer thin and too much like a cracker for my liking. I have given up on finding a good slice of Italian pizza in Boston. I have found most of the establishments in the North End to be tourist traps, and the remainder outside of that area are Greek owned and better suited towards diner food than authentic pizza.

From A Hamburger Today

12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender

Great write up! I am a Queens transplant to Boston and I must agree with you on the lack of good dogs, burgers, and pizza. I have yet to find an acceptable dog or slice, but definitely check out the Druid Pub in Somerville for a great burger. Flame grilled and beautifully seasoned, these guys have it down pat. The only thing I would complain about is the bread to meat ratio - the bun is a little fluffy for my liking. However, the patty is simply delicious and I think that you will enjoy it. They also have wonderful hand cut french fries, mmm.

From Serious Eats: New York

Would You Eat This Lobster?

Look, what if lobster aged like Bordeaux? That it got tenderer and sweeter and more complex as it aged? There would be no sympathy for this guy because of age. None. At. All.

Instead the restaurant would get $500 or a grand, or more, for it. And the lobsterman would get 20-40% of that.

The question of egg capacity would simply mean that only large male lobsters could be harvested, making them even more desirable. And probably an underground market in females would also develop. Can you imagine what they might go for?

This is just the nature of humans, and thus, the nature of markets. So if they're tough and not as sweet, we can anthropomorphize all we want, because we really don't think it'll taste all that good.

@realhound Ah ha, I found that link now. I'm sorry I didn't check out that place long ago. I also noticed that Pizza and Pasta is number 8. When you asked me what my favorite pizza in the area was, I might have forgotten to mention them to you. In addition to very good pizza relative to the other options in Central Jersey, their fresh pasta dishes are very good. I haven't been there in quite a while, so I forgot. I don't know why I stopped going but it's time to go back. I was going there when they still were on Lincoln Blvd. in Middlesex. And the location in Manville has some serious sentimental value. When my son Michael was not much more than two, we visited the place, which is adjacent to the Central Jersey Airport. As we were heading in we saw a small plane taking off and I jokingly said to Michael "Do you want to go up in the plane?". Well, he was not taking no for an answer and spent most of the dinner under the table crying and demanding to go for a spin. It even continued when we went back out to the parking lot. I can still picture him pointing up and crying crying "Up in the plane. Up in the plane". Today Michael is an Air Force Academy graduate and scheduled to head to Del Rio Texas next year for pilot training. To this day I swear that the genesis of his strong desire to fly is rooted in that silly question I asked that evening.

@realhound Perhaps it was because I couldn't take my eyes off those blonde beauties from Stan's. More likely though it was that there were only 6 places shown and I couldn't find a link to page two. And thanks for pointing out the misspelling. I spotted it after I posted, but since Slice doesn't have a comment editing feature I couldn't correct it. Perhap the next time they do an upgrade, they'll add it now that they've implimented their comment notification function. Is it my imagination or is that not happening?

I loved their bar style pies Al. I even took a frozen one home. And their old school atmosphere was very cool. It reminded me of Stan's Chitch's in Bound Brook. I wish I had checked the place out long ago. My favorite old time place is Spirito's in Elizabeth. The have very good bar pies, but I go there for their off the hook creamy home made ravioli. And I'm very glad Scott liked my pies. We had a great time. Keep an eye out for www.31daysofpizza.com Day 3 for further details.

@pizzalove I'm about to try a cheese pie at Deluca's. Reminds me of Stan's Chitch's in Bound Brook or the old Coal burner in Perth Amboy, Sciorentino's. I'll tweet pie shot shortly. To check the place out I used the excuse that I wanted to go to Kohl's in Hillsborough to take advantage of the 30% off coupon I have. I gotta get a new tablecloth for the National Pizza Month tasting I'm having tomorrow with none other than Mr. 31 Days of Pizza himself Sean Taylor and the lovely Robin Rothman. I did have the unexpected pleasure of running into Serious Eats contributor Tam and her entourage as those of you who follow Slice on Twitter already know. We are fast turning that place into a Slice slum. They might as well turn the keys over to us by the time we arrive there on the 17th. Sorry it took a few days.
I'm in Bridgewater. I'm making a return trip to nomad tonight.

From Slice

Made it to Nomad this evening; got there three minutes before 5, but the staff was welcoming and the late afternoon light streamed in, making the whole interior golden and accenting the beautiful blue of the oven tiles.

By a few minutes after 5, at least a third of the 50 or so seats had been taken, including many at the long communal table that takes up most of the center of the small room. The wind was brisk and only one diner opted to sit at an outside table during the time we were there... space is going to be a challenge as the pizza world beats a path to Nomad's door!

The herb garden and fountain visible from the windows are still vibrant and green and truly add to the feeling of being in a very special place.

The pizzas are nothing less than transcendent... being already familiar with Simply Grazin's excellent pork, I had the spicy sausage pie, in which the tomatoes, caramelized onions and meat married perfectly and in balance with the sublime crust.
No need to look to NY anymore, Jersey pizzaphiles!
