Cook the Book: Win a Copy of 'Cook with Jamie'

My mother - Her intent was to help me learn the importance of following directions, since my report cards kept coming back with these comments...
She did her best, but to this day, I'm a fairly extemporaneous cook, although, my report cards did improve! (my lab work never did, though, somehow organic chemistry just doesn't take well to extemporaneity)

Almost immediate gratification artisan bread

The Cook's Illustrated tweak is excellent! It's the first one I have ever made where I could actually hear the crust crackling as it cooled. I even have an extra-large dutch oven, so I can fit two loaves in there (this is good, as my family usually scarfs (sp?) the first one hot out of the oven)

Favorite methods to learn daily home cooking?

Many of the suggested tomes, while complete, can be somewhat intimidating if you are just starting out. You might check out one of the _I Hate to Cook_ books by Peg Bracken. They address kitchen activities with humor, and also cover some things that the other books assume you're already very familiar with. [See if you can check it out of the library, before you make an investment in buying the book - a good practice for any cookbook] The comments re: having your wife tour you through the kitchen are well taken.
