17 Lobster Rolls We Love in the Northeast

I have to give a shoutout for Axel's in Merrimack, NH. It's a roadside stand with a pretty great lobster salad that comes in a buttery, toasted bun with not too much lettuce. You can get the lobster roll, fries, and coleslaw (that is crispy and not too sweet) for less than twelve bucks.

Poll: How Picky Are You About Coffee?

I have a Keurig and am very picky about what K-cups I'll use. My favorites are all from Coffee People: Wake Up Call, Kona Blend, and Black Tiger. They're dark, bold, and really flavorful, even on the largest cup setting. I like my coffee with half and half, no sugar.

To answer the question, I love the taste of coffee, but if I'm desperate, and I mean really desperate, only had 2 hours of sleep last night kind of desperate, I'll drink the swill they call coffee here at work.

Poll: Do You Call Them Jimmies or Sprinkles?

Actually in the northeast (New England in particular) people call them jimmies. Which is what I call them.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 116: A Bite-by-Bite Rundown of My Calorie Intake

This is why people who think weight loss is simply, "Eat less, move more," infuriate me. If it were only so simple. I don't have advice for you, Ed, but I can definitely commiserate.

Shamrock Shake Returns to Select McDonald's, But Disappoints This Year

So I had my first Shamrock Shake of the season and it was just like it always has been - no whipped cream or a cherry and it was in a normal paper drink cup. Weird. I'm in southern New Hampshire. Must be select locations with the new version....glad mine isn't one of them.

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

My first cookbook was Better Homes & Gardens...the one with the red and white checkered tablecloth pattern on the front. I fondly remember the days of teaching myself how to cook with that book and still bring it out from time to time because I can depend on it for classic recipes.

Green Eggs and Ham (And a Side of Kitsch) at The Friendly Toast in Portsmouth, NH

Adore the Friendly Toast. I haven't been in years but now I can't wait to go back! It is an institution in Portsmouth....one of my favorite places when I was a student at UNH.

What Are Serious Eaters Doing on New Year's Eve? What's Your Favorite Brownie Recipe?

I love the Barefoot Contessa Outrageous Brownies. They're incredibly good. Also, David Lebovitz's Dulce de Leche brownies are amazing. If I want something quick and easy, surprisingly, the one bowl brownie recipe on the back of a box of Baker's unsweetened chocolate is excellent.

Nutrition Sells: One Small Step for Mankind

I shop at Hannaford and have noticed the star ratings pop up within the past year. If I remember correctly, I read that even the one star rating has a certain level of nutrition it has to meet, so something like bacon, even a leaner cut, would not get a star at all.

I think the system is probably helpful for people who don't have a lot of knowledge of what's healthy, or they don't do a lot of cooking. For someone like me, and probably a lot of us here, we're not going to grab a box of Healthy Choice cookies with a 2-star rating because we still know it is a lot of unnatural/processed crap. But for a person who normally goes for the package of double-stuff Oreos (and damn they are tasty), the star rating guide at least steers them in a "better" direction.

Häagen-Dazs vs. Ben & Jerry's: Which Are You Down With?

As a VT neighbor, Ben & Jerry's has a special place in my heart and emotionally, is probably my favorite. I also admit I love their creative and quirky flavors and flavor names. When it comes to pure taste, especially for basic flavors, Haagen-Dazs wins.
