Post-Thanksgiving Report

All I made were the rolls this year. No knead light rolls from joy of cooking. I took my giant, green tupperware bowl full of dough to my daughter's house. We had turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, ever so delicious from the mire poix. Bourbon flavored sweet potato casserole. Onion tart and roasted green beans, drizzled with a mixture of maple syrup and spicy mustard, made by my 17 yr old granddaughter. Great job, Savannah!! A salad of mixed greens, pink grapefruit, goat cheese and almonds, dressed with a homemade dressing. I don't know what was in it, but it was yummy. My rolls, of course! Pumpkin pie and an apple/pear pie, Savannah again. A cherry cheese pie courtesy of Savannah's 15 yr old sister, Isabel! We all had a whole lotta fun!!!

Turkey roaster vs oven?

Yep, sure did. I washed everything just like it said. I'll try the liquid in the drip pan next time and see what happens. I'll let you know. Thanks so much for all ur help, Gator. You have a great Thanksgiving!! :)

Turkey roaster vs oven?

Thanks Gator Pam! I did remove all the excess fat i could find and i'm positive that the chicken wasn't coming into contact with the element. I watched it to see where the smoke was actually coming from. As the juices dripped and landed on the drip pan, they would smoke like the pan was REALLY hot. As i'm sure it was. The resulting chicken was amazing though and i really want to use the rotisserie again. That was my first time. Might have to stick it out on the balcony!! :)

Turkey roaster vs oven?

I just got a Showtime rotisserie. The chicken i did in it was most awesome, but it smoked my house up something awful. Had to open all the doors and windows and my smoke alarm kept going off. Does anyone else have this problem?

Weird "Thanksgiving" foods

My mother always made pimento cheese to eat on soft, white bread while Thanksgiving dinner cooked. She made it with an old fashioned meat grinder attached to the kitchen table. I wouldn't touch the stuff back then, but last thanksgiving, i made a batch according to her recipe and it was a big hit!! No meat grinder though.

Making rolls ahead, will the kitchen still smell of fresh bread?

I make refrigerator roll dough the night before and when the time is right the next day, i shape, proof and bake them. Doesn't take long. I use the No-Knead Light Rolls from Joy of Cooking. I always have to add a little extra flour, but they come out perfectly every time.

And now the cake dilemma...c'est finalement l'ennui gateau

I printed out the recipe for Sweet Potato Pound Cake from NPR.org. One of their staffers wrote a new cookbook, All Cakes Considered. The book sounds great and the recipe sounds wonderful!! Haven't tried it yet though.

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal...

Southern cornbread dressing with gravy and the requisite chocolate pie for dessert.

making up lost time - what's for dinner 11/10/09?

When my kids were still little and still @ home, i would go thru the grocery store sale papers and write my menu for the entire week according to what was on sale. Then i would write my list. It was always great fun!!
Tonight, i cooked some sliced, smoked sausage with peppers and onions. threw in some orzo and chicken broth and cooked it til the orzo was done. Yummy.

The family that eats together...What's for dinner 10/25 Sunday??

@LiveFreeOrDine--thank you so much!! I've been hearing a lot about the farmers market. Will definitely have to check it out.

cilantro. There is a web site called I Hate Cilantro. I'm a member and my user name is Vile Weed!! It's horrible stuff!!

Dessert sauce for gingerbread

Here's something different. It's probaby not what you're looking for, but i'm going to throw it out anyway. LOL My mother used to slice bananas over a pan of barely warm gingerbread and then she'd pour frosting over that. Melted butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and milk. She'd make it kinda soupy and pour it over the bananas. OMG

@cassaendra--It loads up funky cause you don't like pizza. :)

What strange food combos do you partake in or have you seen?

My all time favorite thing to gross people out with is just a plain, boiled hot dog dunked in peanut butter. I love it, been eating it since i was little. That tuna and peanut butter thing has me beat by a mile though!! LOL I have a friend who has to eat cheese with her cookies and potato chips with her pizza.

Pizza: A cure for the blues?

Never thought about it before, but you're right. If someone says, "Let's order pizza!!", everyone jumps up to get the yellow pages and they're all talking at once about the toppings they want!! All of a sudden it's a party!!
