Sugar Rush: 'Dirty' Cupcake at Sweet Revenge

@ ksac810: I've had all the Sweet Revenge cupcakes multiple times. I'm a huge fan of carrot cake but I've found theirs to be more often on the dry than moist side. Buttercream frostings are overly sugary, but the ganache topped ones are simply spectacular :)

@ Pomai: Thanks for commenting! You made awesome points regarding the burger. It's really one of those you-gotta-experience-it-in-Hawai'i things to understand the appeal. It doesn't look like much, but when you have the burger right after a malassada (or two? ;) and follow it up with shave ice...few things in the world could taste better ^_^

How Do You Eat Your Bagel?

I come from Brooklyn, where one of my fondest childhood memories is the daily walk I took with my father and uncle to the neighborhood bagel bakery (in Boro Park).

I now live in California, after living 20 years in Massachusetts. I have never been able to find a Brooklyn-style bagel, and I wonder if they still exist.

My childhood bagels were hard and chewy, there was no way to make a sandwich from them. I ate them radially, schmearing the exposed end with cream cheese and eating my way around.

At the company cafeteria today, everyone was talking about bagels, and all but one person laughed at me for eating bagels the way I did. The one person who concurred with me, was a Bulgarian. He was a true Bagel maven.

Blogwatch: Culinary Fool's Maple Cream Cookies

A recent visitor from Las Vegas brought me Maple Cream Cookies (by Manning) and they were fantastic. She tells me they are available at 99 cent stores in the Vegas area. I have found the Dare Maple Creams at Walmart, but I don't think they are as good as the Manning brand.

Eggs Travaganza in Midtown: The First Power Breakfast Cart Ever?

Ed,

Great piece on this cart man! I stumbled across Maribel and Arturo last year while out shooting some "Signs Found in Manhattan" as part of a Roadfood.com post. The signage on their cart drew me in and I tried one of the sweet rolls that looks like a clam shell. I forget the name, but it was awesome. Thanks for all of the info. I'll definitely be back to visit them! Have you tried the Soups On Wheels cart at the corner of 6th Avenue & 52nd Street. Puts the Soup Man chain to shame with some great chicken and dumplings soup!

Butter Lane, Great Cupcakes in the East Village

I just visited NY and had to try Butter Lane. It was such a cute shop and the staff is absolutely sweet. The owner was just leaving on a darling little old style bike. I got to say hello for a moment. Really enjoyed the banana cupcake and the blueberry. Very tasty!

They will be on the West Side tomorrow (Sat, July 25th) at either the NE or the NW corner of 62nd and Broadway, or the NE corner of 65th and Columbus, starting at 8 until noon. Look for the graphics and the cool signs. You can't miss them.

How to Make Kimbap

I love love love kimbap. My mom still makes it for us (me, my sister, my hubby, my kids) when we go on trips. And of course we think her version is the best!
I've tried to roll these myself, but they just don't turn out very pretty. :-P

From Recipes

How to Make Kimbap

Thank you thank you! I dislike sashimi for its texture, futomaki is always ridiculously overpriced at a good Japanese restaurant ($5-7 for four pieces without meat or seafood?!), and kimbap is that good old Korean standby that too many Korean restaurants don’t offer. :) I’ll be making this for myself soon!

From Recipes

How to Make Kimbap

i third cakesmurf's egg suggestion. i'd trade in the odeng for some egg (although he is cute). and i love cheese in my kimbab! especially when it gets all melty from the warm rice. also, i season my rice too as minji mentioned.

From Recipes

How to Make Kimbap

@ cakesmurf: fried egg was always an essential kimbap ingredient at my house growing up :)

YUM!!!
You did a great job of explaining!

I like adding odeng that has been cooked with a hint of soy sauce :)

Speaking of which, what was the soy sauce for? Dipping?

How to Make Kimbap

The "Korean Sushi" comment made me laugh because when I was first introduced to California rolls I thought of them as "Japanese Kimbap"

My mom added sesame oil directly to the rice, along with some vinegar, salt and some rice seasoning that comes in a shaker (no idea what this is called, but it includes bits of kim, sesame seeds, some other ingredients?). So good! I would always try to sneak bits of the rice while she wasn't looking. I also think the sesame oil and vinegar makes the rice easier to spread on the kim.

some people would add sliced fried egg in there.Yum:D

I will vouch for this recipe/method: Grace's kimbaps were excellent!

From Recipes

Kimbap is one of my favs too! Although I'm horrible at rolling it...
@engmcmuffin: In Korea, they have a ton of different "flavors" or I guess fillings...I started to see the cheese rage in the early 90's where places started adding cheese to everything: kim bap, ramen, etc. Tuna has always been a staple filling, as has kimchi, etc., but (and others may disagree with me) cheese I feel was added to give it a 'western' flair and yes, it's usually of a processed variety.

Eggs Travaganza in Midtown: The First Power Breakfast Cart Ever?

My company work with Health Dept. which includes Vendors License and Violation Division. In my 15 years of buying and visiting different vendors, Maribel and Arturo are two of New Yorks finest food vendors. They maintain their cart to Health Department Codes and even wearing the required hats. I am glad that Serious Eats was was able to visit them. I wish them continued success.

Eggs Travaganza in Midtown: The First Power Breakfast Cart Ever?

I work at 52nd and Park on the NW side and never walked by this cart before. Or else I just dismissed it as another breakfast cart selling coffee and roll-like bagels. After reading this a co-worker and I headed over. Maribel and Arturo are GREAT! So nice and put a lot of effort/pride into their food. There was a bit of a wait since he makes everything fresh. Very worth it though. Maribel said to call ahead next time so we wouldn't have to wait there but it was nice to chat w/ her.

They were very excited about their SE debut!

How to Make Spam Musubi

This is not the first time i've made this recipe.
Just made some tonite for my lunch tomorrow and for 5 other people at work who wants it as well. With Kathy's musubi recipe, i added kimchee to mines...MMmmmMMMmMmm Ono-licious!

Here's something i like to add: sometimes when i'm just to lazy to make a meal, i like to prepare my spam like this:
-Slice spam
-lightly coat each single spam with white sugar
-heat pan (medium high) with a tspn of olive oil
-while waiting for oil to heat, set a side a plate with rice (pat down the rice as to make it even on your plate)
-fry spam until sugar carmalize to a dark brown or until your kitchen is filled with smoke (j/k)
-place spam over your rice (while your spam cools, the edge will crisp.
-kimchee on the side and START GRINDING! Hope you like it!!
