Kitchen Heirlooms

I have a wooden bowl that was my husband's grandmother's. She used it for yeast dough. I'd love to have my Mom's old dough board. It has a lip on either of the long sides so it will butt up against the counter or table and stay in place. You can flip it over and the opposite side has one too, so you can use either side and still have it be stable.

Let's talk about Eggs!

My deviled egg recipe is pretty much like yours: mayo, mustard, garlic powder and a little smoked paprika on top. Once in a blue moon I'll add a few drops of dill pickle water from the relish jar to the yolk mix. Mostly I do that in really hot weather. It seems to make it fresher or more tangy somehow.

Super Bowl Help - need some creative suggestions....

I think Liz Lemon had a great idea with a baked potato bar. You could provide toppings to make each serving as bland or spicy as they like. Another suggestion would be a couple big pots of soup or one nice chicken noodle and a pot of some kind of stew. Both the potatoes and the soup and stew are filling and warm. You could go easy on the toppings and have soup too.

Anyone have any luck growing herbs indoors?

I agree with both of the above posters--parsley and rosemary seem to do the best indoors for me. We don't get much sun at all in winter in northern ohio and they still seem to do ok. We usually bring them indoors in late October and they moslty last until spring. Other herbs I grow outside never last, so I don't even try anymore.

My Girlfriend does not like Tahini

One night after I made gyros, we had some heated gyro meat left. I took a pita, cut it up, drizzled with olive oil and baked at 400 for about 6 or 8 minutes. We then topped it with the broken up meat and a dollop of tzatzki sauce. It was great! Greasy, but good. You could also try leaving the tzatski sauce off and putting a little tabasco on the meat on each one too.

I call shenanigans!

@carmason--what you are describing is not the same as a person having an aversion to most food. I agree with you that shennanigans are in order for ALL cases, but there are some who milk it for attention. I hope your cousin finds some relief from this disorder. It cannot be a good way to live.

From Talk

I call shenanigans!

I think it's highly possible to have food aversions. The problem, IMHO, is that the parents don't take charge when the kids are young and introduce a wide variety of foods. They cater to the kids tastes or when they won't eat a bunch of things, just stop serving them and let them eat what they want to. Our son decided he didn't want to eat much when he was about 3 or 4. He wanted junk. He went hungry many times until he decided to eat more than mac n cheese and chicken nuggets. He still hates seafood--and his Dad and I love it---but he does eat a wide variety of foods and fruits and veg. Everybody has stuff they don't like, some folks have true allergies and I respect both of those things. Having said that, I think many of the folks who have aversions to a great many things have talked themselves into believing they can't eat but a few foods. Or they want attention and that is their way to get it. Just MHO, but imma no-nonsense sort of old broad....

Ever Made Anything "Healthier" That Was Actually Good?

I started making greek potato salad after we had it from a greek restaurant take out. Really simple: Boiled potatoes, chopped or sliced onion, a little olive oil, greek yogurt. I also add a little basil and you could add a little hot sauce. We prefer it without the hot sauce. I really like it and its much lighter than potato salad with mayo. You could also add more veg and just not call it Greek.
I've also taken marinated vegetables a little lighter. I marinate them in fat free italian dressing overnight, drain and throw into a basket on the grill.

Pork shoulder steaks ideas

@finsbigfan---My Mom did something like that too, only she didn't make the gravy. It was just the cooking liquid and the onions and caraway seeds. We always had it with mashed potatoes and some kind of vegetable.

Pork shoulder steaks ideas

My Mom used to make a dish she never had a name for. She took pork shoulder steaks, quite a bit of water, a chopped onion, caraway seeds, a bay leaf and a can of tomato soup, (I would use plain sauce and a tbsp of brown sugar instead.) and brought it all to a simmer. She added dried white beans and simmered it until the beans and meat were cooked. It was sort of creamy and thicker but it was really good.

First meal of 2012

First food of the day was a lunch of leftovers from NYE---salami, ham, 2 cheeses, pretzels, cut up veg.
New Years meal I cooked: Pork loin roast, pork gravy, roasted baby potatoes, fresh green beans with red peppers and garlic.
We also had chips and dip while watching the Browns lose their last game of the season.

Last meal of 2011?

Steak and shrimp. Both on the broiler. Roasted broccoli, baked potato. Liquor of some kind. We're keeping it simple. 8)

saw hams in aldi, has anyone tried them?

I've had quite a few hams from Aldi's. We've had both the spiral sliced and the unsliced. Some were as cheap as $1.29 or so a pound. We preferred the unsliced but the sliced was flavorful and not too fatty. Both had good taste too.

Ideas for New Year's Day Dinner?

On NYE we have dinner--this year its shrimp and small steaks. Later, we have some munchies--fresh veg and hot cheese dip (the velveeta, sausage and rotel--hubby's favorite and we only make it on NYE) We're also having chips and dip.
NY day, pork roast, sauerkraut, potatoes of some kind. Old Slovak tradition--pork for New Years and the sauerkraut counts as something green to ensure prosperity. That evening will be leftovers and snacks leftover from the night before.
Monday, we go back to healthy eating and exercise. We did well this year and both lost weight. More work is ahead of us and we always start Jan. 2nd as we consider the 1st to still be a holiday.

How did you do with 2011's New Year's Food Resolutions?

I didn't see my comment from last year but I swear I remember making one. Oh well, my resolutions were to continue losing weight and exercise more, eats lots of veggies, eat less meat and cut out most processed food. We did pretty well, I think. I lost 40 pounds. Hubby lost 25. I also had one knee replaced so I did lots of regular exercise both before and after the surgery. I'm having the other one replaced in early Feb. and will continue exercising (as much as I can stand with the old one hurting) until I have surgery and then I'll do lots of rehab and beyond.
We did pretty well. My resolutions for next year are the same as for this year. We'll just continue!
