11 Foods Serious Eaters Should Be Eating

I, too, am curious about the difference between the fresh and dried/canned/frozen version of these. Are they listed because those more processed versions are more readily available to most people?

I'm also very curious about cinnamon. I have heard much about the benefits. But does that apply only to real cinnamon or also to cassia, which is what most of us purchase in the stores (and has high amounts of a potential toxin coumarin)? I love me some cassia, but should I be tracking down real cinnamon instead?

Cupcakes in LA

It's not a cupcake store, per se, but Joan's on 3rd has some tasty cupcakes. They have a bakery and a lot of tempting items on display. It also seems they could do large orders. Check out the website.

So that gives any vote for Tucson more weight! It being smaller and all.

What's the Best Mexican Food Town in the U.S.?

Tucson!!! I'm totally biased, as that's my hometown. But I live in SF and have spent time in Santa Fe, and while both of those have amazing food, I will always crave paper thin flour tortillas from Tucson. Among other things.

Ippudo: Ramen Worth Waiting For

Tonkotsu is my favorite ramen broth of all. I lived in Kyushu and Yokohama (both known for pork broth) and ate tonkotsu ramen regularly (and packed on the pounds!). I have missed a good bowl of tonkotsu ramen, living in California. Ippudo might be worth a trip to NY!

It is no surprise to me that a bowl of that, made by a master, would convert you.

Dinner Tonight: Steamed Artichokes with Light Balsamic Vinaigrette

I've always used butter, but something like hummus might be good. It's a bit different, but the flavors should compliment. Really, any sort of dip or dressing would probably work.

Serious Easter Artisanal Chocolate Egg Giveaway

Aside from all the candy and the easter baskets my mom used to put together, roast lamb! My mom would stick olives and garlic cloves into the roast, and getting a slice with one of those would be like winning a prize. Mmm.

Cook the Book: Apple Pie

My sister, who like me is not a fan of pie, demands an apple pie from my Mom each Thanksgiving, because her's are so good. I agree. But, better than that is the apple pie from my favorite bakery: Crixa in Berkeley. Their pie crust is far and away the best I've ever had. It's the only place I will go for pie.

Are Bakeries Making a Comeback?

This post really, really resonates with me. Opening a bakery is my fantasy job! And searching out amazing bakeries on the weekend is one of my passions (along with finding chocolate shops).

Although places like Tartine in San Francisco get all the hype, I have found nirvana at Crixa in Berkeley (Hungarian goods, among other things - not your typical, boring muffin and sconery). Plus the menu changes daily. And Bovine Bakery in the North Bay left me feeling rather like a cow. I wanted everything in the display case, and everything I got was fresh and delicious. They also keep you guessing with the selection. Variety is good. Darn. Now I have a major craving for pastries.

Cook the Book: 'Savory Bread From the Mediterranean'

Is it possible to choose a favorite? Either naan or corn tortillas. But I'd take any of the items listed above and consider myself lucky.

Ippudo: Ramen Worth Waiting For

Went last night.
Best ramen I've had in the U.S.
Super nice and efficient staff, and the side dishes were outstanding as well. The prices are great too.

I just found this website not so long ago.
I find all of you so very refreshing and funny.
Doesn't appear to be a food snob amongst this group.
To Shnauzer_mom -- I'm with you with the vodka and pomegranate.

My humble opinion...we are works in progress and sometimes we digress.
The 11 are a good jumping off point.
Bon Sante!

@carosene,

you'll have better luck with turmeric if you use a small amount of it in a long cooked dish and add it at the beginning. the bitterness takes a while to cook out.

I love all of these foods, although I don't usually shell out the dough for pomegranate juice. I use turmeric in my homemade pickles. It adds pungency to these already fantastic garlic dills. As others have noted, the thing to remember about turmeric is a little goes a long way. Also, don't use plastic utensils with it unless you want to dye them yellow.

How about sardines pan seared with cinnamon dusted pumpkin seed/ pine nut crust, wilted chard with crispy pancetta, roasted cauliflower seasoned with tumeric and browned butter and a glass of pom/blueberry juice....maybe thinly sliced-grilled beets with vanilla scoop for dessert...? Perhaps a prune or two at 4 AM when the belly starts aching.
