What's the Prettiest Dessert You've Ever Seen?
Hah! I just had a slice of the Mondrian cake this weekend! It was quite tasty.
And I would vote for the Tomboy cake from Miette Patisserie as prettiest - funny that it turns out to be the same baker (I had no idea until I followed the link).
California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area
I was mystified by Dutch Crunch when I moved to Berkeley. It's nice to know it is a local thing, not something I had overlooked for the first 2/3rds of my life. I usually opt for DC when I get sandwiches, but have yet to get a roll with any actual crunch. Guess I'm picking the wrong sandwich shops.
First Look at the New Berkeley Bowl West in the Bay Area
Yesterday I was picking through a bin of cherries at Berkeley Bowl, being bumped and prodded repeatedly by passing customers. As I was thinking how much I love/hate Berk Bowl another customer started up a convo with an employee about the new location. The employee was saying it is practically empty (of customers). Boy was I kicking myself!
The new one is even closer to my home!! Can't wait to visit. If it is better than the current Berk Bowl, it may actually be heaven.

Cook the Book: 'Bite-Size Desserts'
Just one? Inconceivable! Anything bite sized combining peanut butter and chocolate. Some pecans thrown in would not be amiss.

Healthy & Delicious: Avocado Chicken Salad
@sweetdiesel - Thank you. Let me revise my comment. I hate mayo, I *loathe* aoili. I live in the Bay Area and the sandwich shops think that calling it aoili will make it ok. No so!
I grew up in Minnesota and the neighbor kids ate Miracle Whip on Wonderbread sandwiches (that's all). Horrible! Miracle Whip is particularly offensive as it seems to have sugar in it [shudder].
Healthy & Delicious: Avocado Chicken Salad
Hallelujah!! I despise mayo and have resigned myself to rarely eating pre-made sandwiches as a result. Which can be hard if you are looking for lunch in a pinch! I have to avoid or scrape. And of course that completely leaves out all tuna/chicken salad sandwiches. So thank you for this recipe and anti-mayo validation.
For tuna salad, I use hummus. Mmm.
Cook the Book: 'The Modern Baker'
It's not an exciting story, but the first time I tried to make cupcakes from scratch, they ended up as nasty, lumpy, greasy masses. It was a reliable recipe, too! Quite unappetizing. I went on to make whoopie pies instead and those turned out great!
Cook the Book: 'Chocolate Epiphany'
This may be the hardest question I've ever tried to answer... well, not really, but it does cause pain to think of one final chocolate experience!
Here goes: a many layered, tender, moist chocolate cake with copious amounts of rich chocolate frosting between each layer. With colorful decorations. Like what my mom made for my birthday as a kid, but bigger!
Or a few pounds of fresh Sees chocolates.
Or a really good Amano bar. Or Askinosie (white chocolate bar).
Market Scene: Splintered Trees and the First Corn in Chicago
I love Armenian cucumbers!! Don't be afraid. Even the huge ones are delish. And such great texture.
11 Foods Serious Eaters Should Be Eating
I, too, am curious about the difference between the fresh and dried/canned/frozen version of these. Are they listed because those more processed versions are more readily available to most people?
I'm also very curious about cinnamon. I have heard much about the benefits. But does that apply only to real cinnamon or also to cassia, which is what most of us purchase in the stores (and has high amounts of a potential toxin coumarin)? I love me some cassia, but should I be tracking down real cinnamon instead?
Cupcakes in LA
It's not a cupcake store, per se, but Joan's on 3rd has some tasty cupcakes. They have a bakery and a lot of tempting items on display. It also seems they could do large orders. Check out the website.
And the Winners Are ...
So that gives any vote for Tucson more weight! It being smaller and all.
What's the Best Mexican Food Town in the U.S.?
Tucson!!! I'm totally biased, as that's my hometown. But I live in SF and have spent time in Santa Fe, and while both of those have amazing food, I will always crave paper thin flour tortillas from Tucson. Among other things.
Ippudo: Ramen Worth Waiting For
Tonkotsu is my favorite ramen broth of all. I lived in Kyushu and Yokohama (both known for pork broth) and ate tonkotsu ramen regularly (and packed on the pounds!). I have missed a good bowl of tonkotsu ramen, living in California. Ippudo might be worth a trip to NY!
It is no surprise to me that a bowl of that, made by a master, would convert you.
Dinner Tonight: Steamed Artichokes with Light Balsamic Vinaigrette
I've always used butter, but something like hummus might be good. It's a bit different, but the flavors should compliment. Really, any sort of dip or dressing would probably work.
Serious Easter Artisanal Chocolate Egg Giveaway
Aside from all the candy and the easter baskets my mom used to put together, roast lamb! My mom would stick olives and garlic cloves into the roast, and getting a slice with one of those would be like winning a prize. Mmm.
Cook the Book: Apple Pie
My sister, who like me is not a fan of pie, demands an apple pie from my Mom each Thanksgiving, because her's are so good. I agree. But, better than that is the apple pie from my favorite bakery: Crixa in Berkeley. Their pie crust is far and away the best I've ever had. It's the only place I will go for pie.
Are Bakeries Making a Comeback?
This post really, really resonates with me. Opening a bakery is my fantasy job! And searching out amazing bakeries on the weekend is one of my passions (along with finding chocolate shops).
Although places like Tartine in San Francisco get all the hype, I have found nirvana at Crixa in Berkeley (Hungarian goods, among other things - not your typical, boring muffin and sconery). Plus the menu changes daily. And Bovine Bakery in the North Bay left me feeling rather like a cow. I wanted everything in the display case, and everything I got was fresh and delicious. They also keep you guessing with the selection. Variety is good. Darn. Now I have a major craving for pastries.
Cook the Book: 'Savory Bread From the Mediterranean'
Is it possible to choose a favorite? Either naan or corn tortillas. But I'd take any of the items listed above and consider myself lucky.
Why the hostility toward restricted diets?
Most of what I would say has been mentioned above (I'm in agreement with thepictsie). But, I do object to being labeled as a "carnivore" by those who do not eat meat. It's so inaccurate. I find that term used quite often and it is intended to be insulting and judgmental. Humans are omnivores whether they choose to eat meat or not.
Would you rather give up chocolate or cheese?
Definitely cheese. Easy decision. I eat chocolate almost every day. But cheese is a rarity. I gave it up so I could fit more chocolate in. But I would miss feta....
Green (Cacao) Beans: Theo Chocolate
I guiltily admit that I tried their chocolates with trepidation. It seems I had a bias against organic chocolate. Boy was I happy to be converted. As you say, Theo truly has some of the best chocolates on the market. Not just bars, but filled chocolates, which are my weakness. And the curry coconut bar? Wow. Not for the faint of heart, but amazing!
Are Healthy and Delicious Mutually Exclusive?
I'm with all the posters who point out that healthy food can be delicious. It is a little disturbing that the general attitude is that healthy = boring. Sure, it can be hard in a restaurant to be eating steamed veggies and chicken while everyone else is having fat laden food. But when I cook at home I manage amazing food, full of flavor and high in nutrients. Food I think about all day at work and can't wait to get home to, rather than about junk food.
Then, as everyone else points out, it is possible to have those "bad" foods in moderation. And lots of exercise to top it all off.
Trickle-Down Chocolate Trends
What a pleasure to find you posting on one of my other favorite sites! I like the link you make to Devil Wears Prada/fashion. It really seems to be happening in a lot of industries these days (trickle down effect).
Cook the Book: 'Pure Dessert'
I love making chocolate cakes. Any sort - with or without frosting. Bundt, flat, mini. Chocolate zucchini cake is a favorite.... And frozen yogurt, with real yogurt! I love Alice Medrich's books and hope that Cocolat will be reprinted some day so that I can afford it.
Ippudo: Ramen Worth Waiting For
went to Ippudo last night. the ramen tasted great. BUT gave me a terrible MSG headache. i won't be going back. will stick with Momofuku, I guess. Or maybe I'll just stick with soba.
What's the Best Mexican Food Town in the U.S.?
This one is an absolute no brainer. I am a software programmer and fortunate enough to work for a company that allows me to work from home, I try my best to make a point of living in a different city every year, I pack light and go. I've gone from southern cali, mid-west to the east coast and NOTHING compares to the mexican food in San Diego! Travel just 60 miles up the coast to Los Angeles and the difference is night and day, doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same category. San Diego is on the border of Mexico, and the mexican food gets exponentially worse the farther you get from it. Ask anyone who has actually tried mexican food in mulitple cities, I will guarantee the same response, San Diego hands down. Anyone who calls them nachos instead of carne asada chips, or taquitos instead of rolled tacos can automatically be discredited in this discussion. Those of you who have lived in San Diego will know what I mean.

This is quite the thread here.
But to bring it back to the topic of food (and not Nike), I thought I would suggest a nice site for other chicken recipes, and that is Just Bare Chicken.
