The Coffee Wars Continue
I've tried the McDonalds Iced Coffee twice in the last few weeks and both time it was so full of sweetened cream it made me want to gag. The second time I ordered it, I asked for mostly coffee and just a tiny bit of cream, and it was still way too much. I gave it back, and asked to just add more coffee and the guy looked at me like I was from Mars. He added more (I guess) but what I got back looked like watered down coffee added at the top. I gave up, and will continue to go to my wonderful local places or Starbucks for my iced coffees in the future. I tried...
Threadless T-Shirt Giveaway: Pancake Mountain
My dad's Dutch Babies growing up. Now my brother makes them, so good.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
I'm with those that call it "Egg in a Hole"
Reminds me of being a kid whenever I make it.
Emotional Eating: Strange Cravings when you're ANGRY!
If I'm really angry I can't eat... which is very rare. If you look at me, you can see I'm rather happy, because I love to eat. (haha)
Emotional eating, stress eating (and drinking) are both different stories...
Do you like cooking to music?
I love music anytime, definitely while cooking.
Mother's Cookies, Now for Sale Again
I bouight Taffy's this week and they tasted the same. Yay!!
Regional Fast Food Chains
Togos comes to mind in California for a "local fast food" sandwich shop. They were better in the 70's with the big menu board on the wall, but I still go there when I want their turkey and avo sandwich or the beloved #9 (hot pastrami). They just seem too "corporate" now, but I'll still always love them.
Local to Santa Cruz area... Jacks Burgers. So good. And Taqueria Vallarta for their super burrittos.
A Closer Look at Le Tub's Cheeseburger
That looks yuckky. Too big and too raw.
Where to eat in SF?
For breakfast go to the Buena Vista. It's so charming, and you get the feel of the history of San Fran. Order the Irish Coffee and Eggs Benedict.... so amazing.
It overlooks the cable cars and is very near Pier 39.
Cook the Book: 'Tacos'
The best tacos were out of a garage in Arizona when I was a child. A family friend's grandmother made them and called them "chili burros" and they were amazing.
Banning fast food near schools? Your take.
As a mother of two in high school with open campus.... no I don't think fast food should be banned. I think kids need to be taught growing up what food choices to make, and by the time they are in high school, they've either grown up eating fast food or not.
My kids have two taquerias, a bagelry and chinese food all with-in walking distance, there is fast food too, but most of the kids I know opt for the healthier choices (if there is a choice). I guess it would be a bummer to only have fast food choices around the campus, but banning them seems absurd, and maybe the people trying to ban should instead think about opening up a restaurant near the schools to give the kids other choices.
I tend to think if the worst thing the kids are doing is getting an occasional big mac... we are doing good :)
What do you collect?
Colorful and beautiful mixing bowls.
Glass jars with red lids.
Handmade items that interest me, like my hand-painted wooden jumping jack hanging in my kitchen.
Beachy things... Seashells, my carved wooden pelican, framed photo of my grandmother at the beach....
Little things collected while traveling.
Cook the Book: ''Wichcraft'
ham and cheese with dijon on rye... I'd love to make every sandwich in that book. Yum!
How to Make a Cheeseburger Dress
I like it, would be a cute costume.
Recession Candy: When the Going Gets Tough, Do You Buy More Sweets?
No, I don't eat more candy but I bake more.... I've baked 3 kinds of brownies just this week. It's been stressful, what can I say? ;)
"Sticky" subject ... giving "bites" ... how to handle?
It depends what it is... if it's something like shrimp scampi where I only have like 6 precious shrimps hands off, otherwise I'm happy to share.
Birds Stealing Ice Cream Cones
I live by the beach in Santa Cruz, CA so this cracks me up! We were at an outside restaurant the other day having breakfast and a seagull swooped down quick and tried to eat off my son's plate and he said "Mom, that bird tried to jack my bacon!" Sooo funny! :) Watch out for those sneaky birds!
Where Americans Are Cutting Corners: Food
Absolutetly I'm cutting back on food costs, I'm trying to cut any costs I can with me being the only income for me and my kids. I buy fresh, and healthy as I can... and I shop sales and stock up when something I use goes on sale.
Cutting back is definitely helping me cut back on calories/fat too... they are going together... no money for fast food, makes it a lot easier to make a sandwich on whole wheat and bring it to work with me.
Your Oldest Cookbook?
My Mom's old falling apart Fannie Farmer Cookbook. I love it.
What food(s) did you love as a kid and now can't stand?
Spaghettios for sure. So gross now, but always a treat as a kid.
Also as a kid, I would take peanut butter in a bowl and stir in maple syrup and eat it with a spoon. The thought makes me sick now.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
A Hole in One!!!! My grandfather used to make these for me when I was a very little girl, visiting him in Lancaster, PA. He was not a golfer. He was first-generation American of Swedish descent, who had grown up in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
Some great names here - I love Egyptian Eyes especially! But wow: over 200 comments, and apparently no one else calls them "top hats". (And yes, I always thought my mother invented them, too. :) )
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
My hubby made these for me for me all the time when we were in college - we call them Eggs in a Basket.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
@Ed Levine - My mom called them "Egyptian eggs" as well. I think me, you and Embackus's friend were the only one. It seems to be the least known name for them.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
Eggy in a basket, from V for Vendetta.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
lighthouses still love 'em
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
Everyone knows it's called a "bunny egg". My grandmother invented it.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
Growing up Dad called it a Bulls Eye (from Rhode Island). We always loved when Dad had to make breakfast! He cut the hole with a shot glass so the hole was just big enough for the yolk part and the rest of the egg ran over the bread so you had to flip it and cook that side too! Just don't over cook it and it won't be dry. The hardest part was buttering both sides of the bread. I get around that now by using a brush and softened butter.
Cakespy: Pizza Pie Dessert
Dessert pizza is tough but when everyone is full and you got all this dough then you gotta think of something! Everytime I have people over for pizza this fresh fruit dessert pizza makes an appearance. Its fun and its a fan favorite. I guess its like a fruit tart but its fresh and has a MUCH better crust. Check it out at the link below. Its in the middle of the second row...
Thanks and FORZA PIZZA!!
-Alberto
PS - I also tried a nutella and banana dessert pizza with crumbled graham cracker but havent perfected it yet. Its on my site somewhere too. I'm thinking about adding marshmallows to it...we'll see.
Cakespy: Pizza Pie Dessert
I think you misunderstood me, Mad Ernie - I love that it is a Pie that looks like a Pizza!
Mother's Cookies, Now for Sale Again
I just came back from Calif. with my Mother's Cookies. They taste exactly the same! I just wish that all of the cookies would come back! Especially the Sugar Waffers and the little Flaky Sticks. No one elses' cookies can compare with Mothers'!!!!!! Please bring all of the cookies back!!!!!
A Family Friendly Burger at Dish in La Cañada Flintridge, California
@pthom - 'In sexually reproducing organisms, the cells of the germline form gametes and establish a physical link, an unbroken chain, from generation to generation' -- that definition is cribbed from E. Jane Albert Hubbard and David Greenstein's intro in WormBook, but they are the biologists so I thought it better to use their version than my own. I was making a joke suggesting that my friend's baby had demonstrated a superior genetic make up because she was attracted to the burger.
A Family Friendly Burger at Dish in La Cañada Flintridge, California
The baby is a "germline?" What's that?
A Family Friendly Burger at Dish in La Cañada Flintridge, California
I hear/read "The Fat Dog" also does a nice burger in that part of town (La Canada/Montrose, etc.) their menu here.
A Family Friendly Burger at Dish in La Cañada Flintridge, California
Awesome - this review came just in time. I will be going down to La Canada next week and for sure I'll be eating here! Thanks!
A Family Friendly Burger at Dish in La Cañada Flintridge, California
Great looking burger and baby. Compromise good..
A Family Friendly Burger at Dish in La Cañada Flintridge, California
@ FamishedFem
I've never ate there, so I have no reason to defend the place. I do, however, think that we are all at the mercy of those who make our food. No matter how good the review, no matter the reputation, the person behind the grill, or skillet, is in control. Everyone has a different definition of a great burger as well as what's medium, medium, well, and hockey puck. That's why I believe that if you judge a place off of it's burgers, your best giving it more than one try. Maybe even more than two.
What's Your Favorite Food Court Stop?
I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!, mostly for the name.
What's Your Favorite Food Court Stop?
Roli Boli for the Deli Boli. Not sure if there are any more around but it was a favorite growing up in NJ. Also, I Can't Believe it's Yogurt - used to work there and it was so good.
What's Your Favorite Food Court Stop?
Waffle fries from Chick-fil-A, but only on the East Coast. I also love Hana Grill or whatever little place does teriyaki bowls. Annie's pretzels with honey mustard dip are my favorite late afternoon snack.
What's Your Favorite Food Court Stop?
@SkippyMom I think you might be thinking of Cranberry Farms. I think they only exist in college dining halls now.
What's Your Favorite Food Court Stop?
When I was little, I would go back-to-school shopping with my mom, and our treat at the end of the day was to split a Cinnabon cinnamon roll ... it was a big highlight! Auntie Anne's cinnamon sugar pretzels and slices from Pizzeria Regina are also favorites.
What's Your Favorite Food Court Stop?
Shrimp salad at Ivar's at the Bellis Fair Mall in Bellingham...or the fish tacos at Tres Hermanos in the same mall. Sigh.
