Dinner Tonight: Breakfast Burrito with Chorizo, Potato, and Egg

This looks almost the same as I make them, but smear a little refried beans on the tortilla before adding the chorizo, egg and cheese. Roll them up, wrap them in foil and bake them in the oven for about 20 minutes and everything just melds together perfectly. Also, since I make a huge batch, they're easy to take out of the fridge and take with you for breakfast all week. SO GOOD.

Stories of Astonishing Food Ignorance

These are so funny!

My friend called me once and was excited because she bought "dried plums" and they were "SO good, and she'd never had a dried plum before...", when she was done I said "so you're eating prunes?" and she went silent, and said, "oh yeah, I suppose I am... "

A cute one about my daughter.... when she was little we were driving past the Hometown Buffet and she said very seriously "Mom, I know what a 'buff it' is." I asked her what it was and she said "A fancy restaurant". So cute.

One time while in Pennsylvania I was buying artichokes and the store clerk didn't know what they were to ring them up, that surprised me being from California I thought everyone ate them.

And last, at my friend's house for a bbq (a very good cook) she was going to split the corn-on-the-cobs in half, and she starts sawing at them with a bread knife, making a mess out of it. I just looked at her, grabbed an ear and snapped it in two. She just said "oh, thanks." lol

a Trader Joe's Disappointment

I cook from scratch, but I adore Trader Joes. I vaguely remember not being impressed the first time I went, it seems 20 years ago, but now I go back and back, and back for the same quality things and love their prices. Dried fruit and nuts, juice, pizza dough, hummus, snacks for the kids, chocolate for me, frozen fish, garlic fries...

A Taste of Home at Betty's Burgers in Santa Cruz, CA

I adore Betty Burgers and so happy they made it on serious eats! I do like Jack's too, but I usually find myself at Betty when I'm desiring a big hamburger, plus Betty doesn't just take cash like Jacks. I don't get the meatloaf thing, that has never crossed my mind while eating a Betty Burger, just always pure deliciousness! I hope you got the sweet potato fries with their yummy dipping sauce too, they are a must when you go!. There's also a new Betty in Capitola/Santa Cruz on 41st... love it too!

Taste Test: Whole Foods' DIY Pizza Ingredients

I love Trader Joe's dough, it's a great way to have fresh pizza during the week after work. I didn't know that Whole Foods sold dough too, thank you for the review! I believe I just might have to try the pan method of cooking now.

Poll: How Do You Top Your Pancakes?

Real butter on top, with syrup poured on the plate on the side to dip them in so that they don't get soggy! Must have sausage on the side too, also dipped in the syrup! Yum! I admit to usually buying Mrs. Butterworth's or Log Cabin. It bothers me that I like it better than real syrup, but I do!

The Coffee Wars Continue

I've tried the McDonalds Iced Coffee twice in the last few weeks and both time it was so full of sweetened cream it made me want to gag. The second time I ordered it, I asked for mostly coffee and just a tiny bit of cream, and it was still way too much. I gave it back, and asked to just add more coffee and the guy looked at me like I was from Mars. He added more (I guess) but what I got back looked like watered down coffee added at the top. I gave up, and will continue to go to my wonderful local places or Starbucks for my iced coffees in the future. I tried...

Regional Fast Food Chains

Togos comes to mind in California for a "local fast food" sandwich shop. They were better in the 70's with the big menu board on the wall, but I still go there when I want their turkey and avo sandwich or the beloved #9 (hot pastrami). They just seem too "corporate" now, but I'll still always love them.

Local to Santa Cruz area... Jacks Burgers. So good. And Taqueria Vallarta for their super burrittos.

Where to eat in SF?

For breakfast go to the Buena Vista. It's so charming, and you get the feel of the history of San Fran. Order the Irish Coffee and Eggs Benedict.... so amazing.

It overlooks the cable cars and is very near Pier 39.

Banning fast food near schools? Your take.

As a mother of two in high school with open campus.... no I don't think fast food should be banned. I think kids need to be taught growing up what food choices to make, and by the time they are in high school, they've either grown up eating fast food or not.

My kids have two taquerias, a bagelry and chinese food all with-in walking distance, there is fast food too, but most of the kids I know opt for the healthier choices (if there is a choice). I guess it would be a bummer to only have fast food choices around the campus, but banning them seems absurd, and maybe the people trying to ban should instead think about opening up a restaurant near the schools to give the kids other choices.

I tend to think if the worst thing the kids are doing is getting an occasional big mac... we are doing good :)
