I need a recipe for cookies

The new issue of New York magazine has this recipe for "Flourless Chocolate-Walnut Cookies" that sounds like it will meet your "good and easy" criteria - I haven't made them yet but I nearly started drooling when I saw the picture of them in the magazine!

Shrimp Question: How do you know if it's bad?

Hi everyone - thanks for chiming in! I'm happy to report I ate all the shrimp without incident, however, I will try not to press my luck with shrimp ever again! And I will also try to give fresh shrimp a try (not precooked).

Do you like the Cheesecake Factory as much as NBA players?

The cheesecake is whatever. The cocktails are skimpy on alcohol. The portions are disgustingly huge. Summary: skip it. Any city with a Cheesecake Factory is bound to have a better restaurant somewhere.

Who's a vegetarian?

I was vegetarian for 15 years until I started to watch Bourdain's "A Cook's Tour." I totally fell under his pro-meat spell. For about the last two years I have been eating meat, wondering if maybe I would feel healthier and have more energy. The answers to that are no and no; if anything, I gained weight! And the recent beef recall totally reminded me of why I became vegetarian in the first place, which is why I am no longer eating meat except for these three exceptions: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Europe (I will continue to eat fish, however). Seems like a good balance to me. Perhaps this doesn't make me a true vegetarian, but that's how I identify myself.

I love this recipe for Pumpkin Polenta. Just use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock, and substitute the chorizo for the veggie sausage of your choice, or tofu.

Stately Scoops: What Ice Cream Flavor Represents Your State?

I'm not really sure what flavors are associated with NH. Maine gets blueberry, Vermont gets maple, and Massachusetts gets Fluff. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of my home state is The Old Man of the Mountain but I don't think granite-flavored ice cream would be such a hit. Maybe just vanilla with something hard and crunchy in it like cookies or candy to represent the Granite State. The Old Man would definitely have to be on the package though!

From Talk

who's a foodie here?

To me, a foodie is someone who cares about food and cares about what they eat. I don't think "foodie" has to mean you spend a lot on food or eat crazy things. I think it just means having a passion for food. So yes, I am a foodie!

Pumpkin...

Pumpkin polenta! I saw the recipe in Edible Rhody which said it was adapted from a Rachel Ray recipe, which I then found here. It doesn't use any of the usual pumpkin spices, which is nice, and the manchego is so good in the polenta! I also tried making this with tofu instead of chorizo and it worked just fine. With tofu or chorizo, it's delicious. Recommended!

NYC for New Year's Eve

You're staying at the Marriott Marquis?!? I would think that would be a very fun place to be on New Year's - you can probably see all the action from the revolving restaurant up top!!

Here's my suggestion for a totally random New Year's outing: head down to Grand Central and have a drink at The Campbell Apartment (if it's open - check first). Yes, Grand Central will probably be a mad house, but if you can take it all in from one of the balconies, the chaos can be strangely beautiful. And it's just a gorgeous space overall, and worth checking out. You might be able to pick up a snack to take back to your hotel room from the market, too, if it's open, like some cheese and crackers from Murrays.

Website Feedback

I have to say honestly, the site did not wow me.

It might be helpful to say exactly what A La Carte Catering is right on the homepage, something like "A La Carte Catering is a full-service catering venture run by Chef Jason Schnur in Medina, Ohio." Even though it says "A La Carte Catering," I was thinking, "what is this company?"

My other thought is that the name of your company should be featured more prominently. The visitor counter jumps out more than the actual name! The visitor counter looks a little out of place - I would ditch it.

Paula Deen Is Trying To Kill Us

Its real and its here... (as disgusting as it is)

Paula's Fried Butter Balls

2 sticks butter 2 ounces cream cheese Salt and pepper
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 egg, beaten
1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
Peanut oil, for frying

Cream the butter, cream cheese, salt and pepper together with an electric mixer until smooth. Using a very small ice cream scoop, or melon baller, form 1-inch balls of butter mixture and arrange them on a parchment or waxed paper lined sheet pan. Freeze until solid. Coat the frozen balls in flour, egg, and then bread crumbs and freeze again until solid.
When ready to fry, preheat oil in a deep-fryer to 350 degrees F.
Fry balls for 10 to 15 seconds until just light golden. Drain on paper towels before serving.

Full recipe is here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/paulas-fried-butter-balls-recipe/index.html

Whats the difference between this recipe and deep fried mozarella or deep frying whole turkeys or chickens (before baking) or even Krispy Kremes which are deep fried TWICE?? All of which I cannot stomach.

Chopsticks vs Fork

Question of the Day: What's the best food song?

I sang this one in elementary choir and it's still sticks!

"In today's noodle soup, alphabetic;
there's a fly looking weak and pathetic.

In the noodles he spells out a message!
SOS, send a raft, or canoe.

Look the fly still continue's the message!
And PS, I did not like the soup."

Question of the Day: What's the best food song?

I love "Lunch Lady Land" too, by Adam Sandler. "Sloppy Joe, Sloppy-sloppy Joe...." classic.
But, in a nod to a post I did a few days ago, who can forget Rapper's Delight by the Sugarhill Gang?
"like a can of beer that's sweeter than honey
like a millionaire that has no money
like a rainy day that is not wet
like a gamblin fiend that does not bet
like dracula with out his fangs
like the boogie to the boogie without the boogie bang
like collard greens that dont taste good
like a tree that's not made out of wood
like goin up and not comin down
is just like the beat without the sound no sound
to the beat beat, ya do the freak
everybody just rock and dance to the beat
have you ever went over a friends house to eat
and the food just aint no good
i mean the macaroni's soggy the peas are mushed
and the chicken tastes like wood
so you try to play it off like you think you can
by sayin that you're full
and then your friend says momma he's just being polite
he aint finished uh uh that's bull
so your heart starts pumpin and you think of a lie
and you say that you already ate
and your friend says man there's plenty of food
so you pile some more on your plate
while the stinky foods steamin your mind
starts to dreamin'
of the moment that it's time to leave
and then you look at your plate and your chickens slowly rottin'
into something that looks like cheese
oh so you say that's it i got to leave this place
i dont care what these people think
im just sittin here makin myself nauseous
with this ugly food that stinks
so you bust out the door while its still closed
still sick from the food you ate
and then you run to the store for quick relief
from a bottle of kaopectate
and then you call your friend two weeks later
to see how he has been
and he says i understand about the food
baby bubbah but we're still friends..."

PBS Cooking Shows.

PBS cooking were THE cooking shows between the Julia era and Food Network. The 'cajun' cook was Justin Wilson and all I can remember him cooking was crayfish and chicken and using Lawry's garlic spread. The stand-were Nick Onytail, Ming Tsai, Yan, Maryann Esposito (yes she was a bit dull but she was a fearless cook), Cooking at the Academy, Sarah Moulton. Jaques was the best chef around and the Frug was the best 'cook'.
He started flipping out towards the end, though. Food Network was a good evolution of that era, buy it definitely lost it's edge when it became a Lifestyle channel instead of a real food channel. I heard the marketing dept. complained the shows were too 'chef heavy'. Maybe I should go back to PBS.

Paula Deen Is Trying To Kill Us

It's hard to watch Paula Deen when she is making a dish or chicken soup.
Whatever the recipe is, I have trouble getting thru her programs. No. 1 She talks over making the food and her spittal goes right into the food! Yuck!
It is not professional at all. No. 2 she tastes everything with the spoon or
fork she is using. So gross! She does not show great hygine when cooking. Her dna is going into everything she makes when talking over preparations. I would not want to eat anything she makes! At least talk
away from the dish being prepared and don't touch the dog, or your hair.
Never put the dish cloth over your shoulders either...all that hair and who know what else sitting on the shoulders. Totally grosses me right out!
Hope she takes some advice and changes many of her way's!!!

Paula Deen Is Trying To Kill Us

I have been eating for close to 5 years a low carb diet. I eat tons of fat, butter, eggs, red meat, pork chops, veges galore. Have not eaten one bite of sugar, flour, rice, bread in this entire time. Not one cheat. I am not over weight, I am very healthy. So you roll your eyes and say, Wow her cholesterol must be very high. Not so. I recently had my cholesterol checked and was told they could be framed and put on a wall as being ideal. Fat is not the evil it is combining fat with high carbs that cause great problems. No I will not eat deep fried butter balls not because it is butter but because it has bread crumbs in the recipe. I love Paula, I love the South and I love southern cooking just the low carb way.

But, after reading some of these posts, I am not sure a lot of other people have either.

But, neither is fast food, junk food, or any other high-calorie foods.
