McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

Admittedly, this always was my favorite thing to get at McDonald's.
I haven't been to McDonald's for at least a year, though, and I have no particular desire to go back.

Oolong: The Tea for Tea People

akk328: I believe that's made by Revolution.

My boyfriend's a major tea snob, and he would like to point out that while oolong is awesome and his probably his favorite tea, a true tea drinker knows what pu-erh is.

(I think both oolong and pu-erh are awesome as well.)

Pizza With a Knife & Fork?

I'm guilty of eating the entire slice, crust and all, using a knife and fork.

And my reason for doing so is rather pathetic, I suppose. I just don't like getting my hands oily.

I'll Eat It, But I'm Not a Huge Fan of _________

Olives, dates, foods with figs in them (I'm still not sure if I actually like figs or not; the first one I had tasted like mushy sweetened grass, but I seem to be okay with Fig Newtons), avocado, melon (seeing it dominate fruit salads upsets me, though), most processed foods (although I hate how salty they are, and I know they're terrible for me), marinara...
I'm sure there are others that I can't recall at the moment.

Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast: The Starfruit

Ah, I was worried there for a second. Good thing I have no kidney problems. I didn't care for starfruit the first time I tried it, but I've been wanting to give it another shot. After all, the star is my favorite shape.

Let's Talk Cookies... What's Your Favorite "Go To" Cookie

Sugar. My favorite is slightly lemony and dipped in moderately large grains of sugar. I also like snickerdoodles. However, I have yet to try baking them; I've made a lot of "meh" chocolate chip cookies, though.
My boyfriend considers sugar cookies worthless. I am determined to prove him wrong.

My Secret Love for Grape Candy

Thank you for this post! It made me smile from ear to ear. I just found Batman themed Airheads at Target yesterday, which included a grape flavored bar. I was thrilled beyond belief and trying to find an excuse to go back so I can buy 10 bags of Airheads just to get the one grape!

It would have suited to have identified a date for the closure. I on April 24, 2009 am about to buy Scharffenberger chocolate, actually would have except I read this first, and would be more inclined to do so if the factor were not closed yet. Now I am uncertain. I agree with anti-Hershey comments. Hershey chocolate is not made in Pennsylvania. It is made in Mexico. That Milton Hershey Foundation is a success "story" is b.s. One does not eat success "stories" in my neighborhood or books either. Mr. Levine probably complained because his history professor asked for dates on examinations. Dates do matter. They even help one buy chocolate.

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

cheap and delicious - it's a classic. during the mad-cow scare, this was the only sandwich my gf allowed me to eat from the mcd's and i learned to love it. and believe me people, you should worry more about where they get their dairy and poultry than worry about the fish. lastly, i love the tartar sauce overload, once i take it out of the box, i smear half of it on my box and use it as dipping sauce for my golden delicious potato stix. =)

First of all the man is gone. What was his passion, his business, his life was sold to Hershey Foods. Unlike others I see what Hershey foods contributes to the area in which it is. The Milton Hershey Foundation
http://www.mshersheyfoundation.org/ is as much a success story as Robert Steinberg's story. Milton Hershey built a community there, it is not just a place to buy Hershey Bars and go to the amusement park.

Yes Hershey makes waxy american chocolate.
It sells shitloads of it a year. Every now and then I grab a Reese's cup because I am in the mood for that kind of thing. Just because we are chocolate afficinados does not mean that the average american does not look forward to the work that Hershey's puts forth.
Not everyone is as exacting and concerned with it like we are.
If you want to keep the love of chocolate alive buy Robert Steinberg's book which to me is a must have for all Scharffen Berger fans
http://www.amazon.com/Essence-Chocolate-Recipes-Baking-Cooking/dp/1401302386/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233294632&sr=1-1

Robert inspired me to use the good chocolate in my baking and I will not see him trashed. Yes he sold his company. He had cancer. I am sure his foremost thought was that his work go on and for his family. Who can tell what goes through the mind of someone who was ill for over 20 years.
Certainly not me. I am much in awe of all his work and contribution to chocolate and as cybele has said the products are not being made in PA.
Hershey is not going to retool.

Bottom line is, this guy sold the company to a large company.. If he really gave a shit he would have had in the contract that the Factory must remain open..

I doubt this businessman was so naive that he thought Hershey was going to continue in the same direction..

Large company buys small company with a great name.. Large company strips the small company only keeping the name and nothing else..

This is nothing new.

From Serious Eats

Hershey's to Close Scharffen Berger Plant in Berkeley; Robert Steinberg Spinning in Grave

To those who are talking about hoarding - Scharffen Berger is still being made and will continue to be made. At their Robinson, IL factory. Which is probably what you've been buying for the past few years anyway.

shoot, i better get out and get me some Scharffen Berger dark chocolate. that stuff keeps me healthy. why would Hersheys do a thing like that?

From Serious Eats

Hershey's to Close Scharffen Berger Plant in Berkeley; Robert Steinberg Spinning in Grave

like some others who already said this... the cautionary tale is don't sell your company if you don't want to lose control of it.

Sorry, but my sympathy is ZERO for your dead friend (though tons of sympathy for the employees). Your dead friend sold FOR THE MONEY. Big corporate money, so he got his. If he had "concerns" he should not have sold. Once Hershey took ownership, it was theirs to do with what they wished. They PAID (your dead friend -- ka-ching) for the right.

From Serious Eats

Tonight's news said that the retail outlet in the SF Ferry Building would stay open - but I couldn't discern when, or if,they intend, to demolish the Scharffen Berger brand and name. Even if it continues the name, a big difference will be in the processing procedure and choice of beans.

Ghirardelli will now get my business.

It's really a shame, but the founders might have thought of that before they sold and gotten some kind of contract that ensured the company's existence in it's original format.

What about Smucker's and White Lily Flour - More of the same....

From Serious Eats

Hershey's to Close Scharffen Berger Plant in Berkeley; Robert Steinberg Spinning in Grave

The brainless minds who run Hershey are just like the dumb-ass cookie cutter execs who ran most of the great American companies into the ground. Once a long time ago, Hershey was a people company. Not any longer, not never as long as these clowns keep their noses on the bottom line.

It takes guts to keep a brand going in the face of what cowards fear most: loss of money. I'm running out to buy all the Scharfenberger chocolate I can find.

What bugs me is, why did these morons buy the company if they never meant to keep it alive?

My Secret Love for Grape Candy

WOW... You have no idea how big my obsessions for grape flavored things is.. I get so excited just to see grape candy... When i went to Japan on a trip for two weeks... EVERYTHING WAS GRAPE FLAVORED! the swirl soft serve ice cream.. instead of vanilla and chocolate swirled.. it was vanilla and grape swirled. it was simply amazing... I was also grape woman once... a Grape super hero complete with shiny purple spandex... ha.

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

BTW after watching the show I went to a wholesale distributor that I have bought raw breaded cod "squares" from in the past... I paid $40.00 for
24 - 4oz portions... if my math serves me right, that is $1.60 per portion!!!
I think I'll just buy mine @ McD's

From Serious Eats

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

Actually I was watching a show the other day that highlighted McDonald's own fishing vessels in which the COD are prepared and flash frozen right on the ship... employing many workers who work 12 hour shifts until the cargo is full and then back to port to offload... already prepared and packaged Filet 'O Fish.

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

I've always liked this sandwich...and that goes back about 40 years...today I order it slightly healthier w/o the cheese, request light sauce and ask them to add lettuce, tomato and pickle. It is a little confusing for most of the cashiers at first, but most of the time I receive what I requested...just wish the bun was whole grain or a bit healthier in other ways. I generally only eat at McD's when taking a car trip but it is something consistent to count on.

From Serious Eats

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

once in a while I get a nostalgic craving for one, but then I think about the highly processed bits of white fish deep fried in heavy batter and slathered with cholesterol laden mayonnaise on a slightly stale bun, not to mention the processed cheese, and I remember why I don't eat filet o' fish anymore. But the pull of childhood is strong.... thinking Velveeta ...

From Serious Eats

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

I grew up with this. I kept the kind of kosher where this was the only thing at McD's that we were allowed to eat. I have never had a Happy Meal. When I was very young, I used to call these Cheeseburgers because of that yummy slice of plasticky American Cheese. The more tartar sauce the better. I used to dip my fries in the sauce that oozed out. I haven't had one in years. Tempting...

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

I LOVE THEM ! Second to the Big-Mac.My first job was at the McDonalds 4 blocks from my house (I could ride my bike to work safely at any hour) in the summer of 1967 and again in the summer of 1968, my highschool summer job. The filet-a fish sandwich for only $.25 was great back then when all food was cooked on site and all ingredents were very wholesome, NOT the McDonalds of today as everything comes flash frozen pre-cooked in a microwave-bag, simply put horrible. The original used a fresh-baked slightly-sweet (naturally) bun with a tartar sauce that actually was very good (recipe developed by a real chef not a marketing group) the fish patty was, as pointed out earlier, of predomaintly Haddock or True Cod (now almost extinct thanks to the cod war waged by Canada attempting to preserve the fishery vs the European countries about fishing rights on the Grand Banks) and yes a full slice of real American cheese that had flavor and it was delicious.
I was working at McDonalds when the Big-Mac was introduced and it was also delicious and only about .45 or .50 cents some rediculious price along with .15 cent burgers, .17 cent cheeseburgers, .12 cent fries and so on. Everything was so much better when it was all cooked on site, we even washed, peeled, cut and blanched the fries from whole potatos numerous times a day. I still get a Filet-a-fish and a Big-mac on occassion when I cant control myself while passing a McDonalds.
