LOL how cute. I wish we has a Trader Joe's here in Austin. Is it kinda like Whole Foods? The prices he shows certainly look better than Whole Foods prices.

Ikea Groceries: Some Assembly Required

Ah, thanks for this! I will definitely have to pick some of this stuff up the next time I'm in Ikea, which now may have to be sooner than later. I've only ever gotten the Swedish meatballs and sauce in the marketplace, but I'll definitely have to look for those onions, sausages, elderflower concentrate and sparkling pear cider. I'll pass on the seafood, I'm really not a fan of seafood. Ooh, and maybe I'll try the coffee, too...

Sweet Potato Fries -- Who Likes These Things?

I have had them twice, and I love them. There's a place here in Austin, Kerbey Lane Cafe, and they make deliciously crispy sweet potatoes fries. They serve them with ranch dressing. NOM NOM NOM.

Dinner Tonight: Seared Steak Tacos with Cactus Paddles

Once I ate a cactus out of my yard. I took all of the spines off, of course, but it made my lips sting, like there were tiny cactus needles sticking them. It tasted okay I guess.

How Old Is Too Old To Trick-or-Treat?

I don't think you're ever too old. I just hate it when I see older kids skulking around with no costumes going door to door for candy when they're not even dressed up. Or when older kids dart out in front of little kids to get to the doors first for candy. I trick or treated until I was 27, but mostly, it was to walk around the neighborhood and see everyone else's costumes. I rarely took any candy after I was like 12, I'd just go along in my costume with my friends. We always all dressed up and went all out on the costumes, so the neighbors always liked seeing what we'd come up with.

Deep-Fried Jelly Bean Time at the Texas State Fair

This is sad- I was born and raised in Texas, and I have never gone to the state fair. We lived too far away as a kid, and now although I'm in Austin and it's only 3 hours away, there is no excuse not for me to go. Grrrr to me.

Lettuce? Whaddya, crazy? Why? It adds nothing. Maybe some arugula (strong flavor) under the burger if you need a built-in salad, but plain old lettuce would just disappear.

But tomato in the grilled cheeses sounds good. Gotta have tomato on a cheeseburger.

I'm thinking maybe blue and swiss/Gruyère/Comté for the cheeses (one each), if not all extra-sharp cheddar. If using jalapeño cheddar (or better yet, habanero cheddar), only in one sammy, plain cheddar on the other. Otherwise the chiles will overwhelm everything else.

Bacon only if using cheddar. And not too much. Still have to taste the burger. Balance is important.

I realize this post is a bit old, It seems to me that turkey could make a reasonable substitution for the chicken. I've got some leftover turkey that I roasted in my BBQ sitting in the freezer. Anybody have any input before I try it and possibly ruin it? Thanks!

what a little cute elephant over-the-top of purple cap... imagine, every time you cook you may say and give its name, "hi bimbo it's cooking time!" (the eagerness to cook) or joking around with your friends, tell them while having a dinner that the food you cook was used from an elephant oil obviously their reaction was no way but you should clear it...

AWESOME CAP!

Love the idea -

Much to the shargin of my wife I am going to try this idea out tonight. The biggest challenge to me is to ensure proper timing so that everything is at the proper heat to ensure that the butter, cheese and beef blend together properly and not congeal.

Cheers!

This is one of my new favourite recipes! My wife and I both love it. We've made it four times now, although we've varied the type of beans based on what was in the pantry. I just made it again tonight, and we have enough leftover for a few lunches this week. Sweet!

Can 'Pushing Daisies' Increase Awareness of Pie With Cheese?

I have a plan for a raspberry pear pie with brie baked into the crust but I have no idea how to bake cheese into a pie crust! Please help. I was thinking about putting a sheet of phyllo between the filling and the cheese and then putting the crust over it, but I'm not sure how well this will work. Any ideas?

@Amethiste: Don't listen to those other folks! Potatoes, in a chili? Surely, you jest. If you don't want beans in your chili, then take a page from traditional chili recipes, and just substitute it with more meat! For dinner tonight, I followed this recipe (which was awesome, by the way) and substituted extra chicken for the one diner who didn't like beans. It came out just fine.

The burning sensation of chillies is neutralised by other members of the same plant family, which is why chilli relatives like greenpepper, tomato and potato all turn the fire down when eaten with chilli. The juice of fresh tomatoes works a treat for removing the burning sensation from your hands. (If you're unfortunate enough to get it in your eyes, though, rather use milk to wash it out!)

An old boyfriend of mine had a bad pepper experience - he was mincing a Scotch Bonnet and then itched under his nose. His face swelled up and his nose membranes were on fire, and I forced him to snort milk up his nose with a straw. It helped!

Juliebugsmama - cilantro and lime would both make great additions, I think. If you have 'em on hand, I'd definitely use them.

Howonder - if I had known then...

Gourmetgal - I went with cannellini. Delicious.

Amethiste - Cary makes a good point: if you leave out the beans, you'd need a substitute. Potatoes would make it more of a stew, but it could work very well if they hold their shape enough.

vox8ight - RIGHT? I was ready to add both salt and pepper at the end, but it didn't need either. Probably totally dependent on the stock, though.

From Recipes

Healthy & Delicious: White Chicken Chili

I checked the two recipes referenced, and none of them call for any additional salt or pepper. Can this be right? When you prepared it did you seriously not add any salt or pepper? Were you using full salt Chicken Stock? I am just curious, my hubby thinks this looks awesome and I am going to give it a try.

From Recipes

I had a similar pepper experience when I was young (like 12?). I was preparing peppers for something and poked holes in all of them without wearing gloves. It burned the tips of all my fingers. Very traumatizing when you are that young.

If you don't like beans...try adding diced zucchini...and a spoonful or two of 'instant mashed potatos' to thicken it up a tad.
