Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

I tried it years ago at a no-longer-there J. deli in Pennsylvania, along with a tuna sandwich made with mashed hard-boiled eggs. Did not care for either...if it's Dr Brown's for me, it's black cherry (there's still a sugar-free version)

Corn on the Cob is best when ______

...Parmesan cheese and a 'southwestern' spice mixture are added along with the butter...it sure works for a local vendor I find at festivals and sports events (they'll sell you containers of the spice here, tho I think most of you can come up with your own)

What's delicious in Jersey City?

Sadly, Edgewater isn't served by the light rail (it turns west near Lincoln Harbor and goes underground until Tonnelle Ave). Check with NJTransit.com for bus service.

El Ranchito del Agave: The Only All-You-Can-Eat Mexican Buffet in Manhattan?

Seriously - it's a Mexican BUFFET!!!! This is so crazy! The food is so delicious and really cheap.I tried cause I work around the corner and was like OMG! It's like 9 bucks for all you can eat or $3.99/lb to go if you want to. The to go option can have you get a bunch of food and come out only to like $5.00. They also have a la carte menu. You need to just try it. I'm actually booking it for a corp party at the end of the month.

When you go in, there's like a bakery and the restaurant is in the back. Its surprising how large the space is once you go to the back.

Enjoy!

Corn on the Cob is best when ______

Grilled with the husk on! NO need to soak or remove the silk beforehand unless the husk is extremely dried out. Then, butter and seasalt and the shameful secret.

When it comes to corn on the cob--ONLY crappy powdered black pepper will do, in enormous stomach burning quantities. I will choose it over the finest fresh cracked in an instant. Only for corn...and sunny side up eggs.

From Talk

Corn on the Cob is best when ______

@PerkyMac I agree Duffield's is good but Zimmermans Farm on Salina Road is much better. There is nothing like getting corn still warm from the field to eat a couple hours later. It's so sweet and perfect.

First Look at the New Yankee Stadium Food

I recently did 1st visit to pro baseball last month to new Yankee Stadium. Carl's philly steak w/ cheezwhiz was fantastic, luckily took advice that I would not have room for fries. I've spent $20 on far worse than one of them babies and a beer in my time. If any AA members are reading, screw the meetings "Hi, I'm Adam, I'm an alcoholic, and my wife Eve is addicted to apples." (or something like that) At $9 a beer, recovery comes quickly. I wasn't even driving, legally could have though. Dinner at Hard Rock next time, not just a t-shirt and a draft...

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

The beauty of Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray consumed with pastrami or corned beef is that you get a double-dose of nitrites: first from the meat cure, then from the celery extract. I love it!

About 10 years ago I was at a "guest chef" dinner at Cornell's Hotel & Restaurant Management school, in which the guest chef was Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit. He used a celery sorbet as a palate cleanser, and it brought me right back to Ratners on Second Avenue (Yes Cel-Ray makes a wonderful accompaniment to dairy, especially latke, another entree that Ratners' called "protose steak" and other oil-infused dishes; just like with pastrami, Cel-Ray is a perfect foil to the food's richness.

I love MisoDo!!! I even have the little mascot as my desktop background..hehe...
If you want a Pon de Ring fix in NY, you can always try the mochi donuts at Zaiya, similar texture...not as great..but it's good enough..

these are obviously FRIED CAKES WITH A HOLE (as most people call them). any type of foodie or any type of person really would realize that donuts are a myth. come on, serious eats; i don't go to science blogs to read about bigfoot and ghosts. stick to what's real.

From Serious Eats

PS: Those dry cake 'doughnuts from a local gourmet food shop......something was very wrong with them. REAL fried cakes are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The very best eating every.

"Did I have a traumatic doughnut experience as a child? (Actually, I sort of did; my early doughnut memories involve unappealingly dense, dry cake doughnuts from a local gourmet food shop.)"
If the writer of this article is a chef, cook or any kind of foodie, they should know that the above mentioned are FRIED CAKES NOT doughnuts. They are made with a cake type batter and deep fried. Hence the term 'fried cakes'. Doughnuts are made from a yeast batter and raised. Hence they are called 'doughnuts'. The terms are NOT interchangeable as they are different things.

First Look at the New Yankee Stadium Food

I only tried the garlic fries on my first visit, but they were the best I've had. More well done than at Safeco Field and the Ballpark Formerly Known As PacBell. It's a good thing I didn't eat more. I might not have been able to keep it down after the Indians scored 14 runs in the second inning. I'm heading back this Saturday and plan to get some BBQ. I was gonna check out the Cuban sandwich too. Thanks for the heads up, Erin. I hope I have some room when I get to the stadium. I'm making my inaugaral visit to the Red Hook trucks on their 2009 opening day.

Ciao,

Good stuff. I've been to 2 games and had my fair share of food. Overall not impressed, but wasn't expecting much. The Billy Barou nachos were tops on my list followed by Lobels, and the chicken noodle bowl was decent. Still prefer grabbing a quality boars head sandwich from the Banana Deli on 161st St. for $5 and bringing it in. Thankfully we're still able to bring food in. Check out my rundown with a lot pics HERE.

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

To me, Cel-Ray has an interesting and complex flavor. I do enjoy its not-too-sweet character and respect its place alongside a good pastrami sandwich.

I've always been too afraid to try it. I'm a Dr. B's Black Cherry man myself. Cream is the back-up. I will try the Cel-Ray and get back to you.

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

I'm not much of a soda person, but I'm just happy that Cel-Ray still exists. It reminds me of an ancient tonic that should've fallen by the wayside but hasn't. Hooray for product diversity!

From Serious Eats: New York

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

I love cel-ray and it always reminds me that I don't eat enough celery or celeriac in day-to-day life. I also love not-too-sweet MASH and San Pellegrino sodas. Except for Chinotta--the day I tried that I stood over the sink and spat it out. Way, way too much.

From Serious Eats: New York

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

i don't think i've ever tasted it! mostly because i rarely drink soda, and when i do want one and there's dr brown's available, i'm all about the black cherry.

From Serious Eats: New York

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

I'm not Jewish, but grew up in Park Slope, and the 'burbs as a teen, and I love Cel-Ray. On more than one occasion I've sat at Katz's late night with Joey D. and watched tourists sit at the orgasm table, while downing a late night pastrami and a few Cel-Rays, to sober up before heading back to the burbs. Now I've moved to coastal Maine and there's no Cel-Ray here! So I make do with a Moxie (special edition made with cane sugar.) I only drink soda rarely, and don't like most of the crap out there, but a few soda's are grown up enough for me. Cel-Ray, Moxie, Manhattan Special, and Blenheim's Spicy ginger ale.

From Serious Eats: New York

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

@Mongoose: I too adore Manhattan Special, Chinotto, and, yes, salty Dutch licorice.

From Serious Eats: New York

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

I like it, in fact, it's one of the few sodas that I do like (Manhattan coffee soda and chinotto are the only other two I can think of). And I'm proud of the fact that I made at least one convert to it. I think the very slight bitterness is gives a bit of complexity and interest, which most sodas lack. Then again, I adore liquorice... yep, even the salty sort.

On the other hand, I have trouble coping with pastrami; too... pink, too heavy for me.

From Serious Eats: New York

Jewish Food Authorities Weigh in on Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray

I love cel-ray and have since I was a kid. I, mind you, am a gentile that grew up in a very waspy small town in Pennsylvania. But, and it is a big but, I married a Jewish girl that also enjoys the taste of celery soda with her corned beef or pastrami on rye.

What's delicious in Jersey City?

if you are interested in going to the Mitsuwa Marketplace (I don't think Trader Joe's and whole foods is worth the trip) there is a shuttle bus that goes there from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Yeah it may seem strange to take the path into NYC and then take the shuttle to edgewater but it'll do in a pinch.
